This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Forests of California After a quarter century of effort by the conservationists, the problem Of providing for adequate protection and wise use Of forests and forest land in the United States is still one of the most pressing problems of the Nation. This problem can not be solved in its entirety by foresters and landowners. Public Opinion must be aroused. The destructive use Of the forests which created the pres ent Situation has been tolerated partly because Of lack Of general understanding Of the results Of unwise lumbering methods and Of letting fire burn the woods. There is great need to-day for the public to become acquainted with the forests in a more intimate way. To know something of their extent and productivity, their relationship to the economic and social life Of the Nation, and their consequent claim to direct interest on the part Of every citizen in their wise use and perpetuation. Thousands of tourists visit the Northern California groves each year. The story of the California redwood lumber industry also tells the stories of the men, the trains, and the land. This book is dedicated to the pioneer lumbermen who succeeded in launching careers as mill men by overcoming the tremendous obstacle of moving the giant redwoods from the woods to the mill, by inventing equipment strong enough to handle the gigantic logs, and by finding suitable markets for their lumber throughout the Pacific area; and to Augustus William Ericson and the other early photographers who preserved the early history of logging in pictures.

Book Redwood and Lumbering in California Forests

Download or read book Redwood and Lumbering in California Forests written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Redwood and Lumbering in California Forests The Publishers, in presenting this work to the Public, feel confident that their endeavor will meet the wants of a large number of people, both on the Pacific Coast and abroad. The visitor in the heart of the Redwood belt invariably departs therefrom with a desire that he may take with him something suggestive of its grandeur and beauty. Without relying upon his memory or his descriptive faculty, for imparting to others what methods are employed in the felling, logging, and transporting of these monster trees to sawmills, as well as the equally giant proportions of the machinery used in reducing them into building material, the visitor finds in this work, at least, memoranda of unquestioned truthfulness. Photographic views of Redwood trees, logs, booms and logging trains have been taken before to a limited extent. These, however, were mounted separately upon heavy cardboard, and liable to be appropriated by "admiring friends." The Publishers believe no one ever before attempted the photographing of the "Evans, Third Saw" - really, four saws. The light in mills for this work is poor at best, and a perfect view is impossible to obtain, but one sufficient to give the stranger an idea of the method of operation is presented. The almost constant fog that hangs over the Redwood belt makes it difficult also to obtain good views of the forests and logging camps. Dr. Kellogg, of the California Academy Of Sciences, and author of "Forest Trees of California," has, by special request, written an article for this work of an historical character, showing the relationship of the Redwood to the Mammoth trees and others of the cedar genus. An article on the Redwood so complete in detail has never before been published. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. At the present rate of production there is over a cen tary's supply within this comparatively limited area in California. Paradoxical as it may seem, America's oldest tree is the least known and the last to be put to extensive use in the service of mankind. It was not until 1850 that any Redwood was cut for the market. Book Factors Affecting Income From Second Growth Forests in the Western Sierra Nevada Classic Reprint

Download or read book Factors Affecting Income From Second Growth Forests in the Western Sierra Nevada Classic Reprint written by Horace Richard Josephson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Factors Affecting Income From Second-Growth Forests in the Western Sierra Nevada Second-growth pine forests along the Western slope of the Sierra Ne vada in California, dating back to logging operations during the boom days of the early gold rush, are destined to play an important part in the future economy of California. These young-growth stands, contain ing varying proportions of ponderosa pine, sugar pine, Douglas-fir, California incense-cedar, and white fir, cover an area of about acres distributed along the Sierra Nevada as illustrated in figure 1. Located for the most part outside national forest boundaries, second growth pine forests constitute the dominant cover type throughout the western Sierra Nevada foothills. In the more rolling foothill region between elevations of about to feet, where logging operations were centered during the early gold-mining period of the 1850's and 1860's, many of the second-growth stands are of fairly even age. Throughout most of the region, however, particularly in the more rugged forest areas at higher elevations, the young-growth stands contain both young trees and residual old-growth timber left during the early logging. These widely distributed stands are of uneven age and mixed-species composition. These young pine forests have considerable potential importance as the basic resource for future lumbering industries. However, the income producing power of most young-growth stands is restricted by various production and marketing problems. A low density of stocking, for example, and a patchy distribution of forest cover reflect the prevalent limited utilization of the timber-growing capacity of forest lands. Re current forest and brush fires continue to accentuate understocking and to enlarge the deforested areas.
