Download or read book The Timber Resources of Southern New England Classic Reprint written by Neal P. Kingsley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Resources of Southern New England A resurvey of the forest resources of the three southern New Eng land States - Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode' Island - was undertaken in 1971 by the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station some 19 years after the initial forest survey. The Experiment Station staff had the cooperation of the Connecticut Commission of Parks and Forests, the Massachusetts Department of Natural Resources, and the Rhode Island Department of Natural Resources. Carl E. Mayer, project leader, directed the resurvey. Joseph E. Barnard was in charge of computing and tabulating all inventory data. He was assisted in this task by David R. Dickson. James T. Bones, with assistance from state personnel in these three states, collected and compiled the data on timber removals and timber products output. Teresa M. Bowers assisted with the compilations and checked the statistical data. Carmela M. Hyland assisted with administrative services for the field personnel during the survey. This report summarizes the forest-resource situation and the changes that have taken place since the initial survey. More detailed data for individual states and counties may be obtained in other publications resulting from this resurvey. Users having a need for such data should contact the Forest Survey Project, Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, 6816 Market Street, Upper Darby, Pa. 19082. Users of these data are strongly advised to read carefully the definitions of forest-survey terms and the section on the reliability of the estimates in the appendix of this report. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Woods and by Ways of New England In describing the aspects of. Nature, I have selected such views as afl'ord me the most pleasure, endeavoring by my manner of presenting them to inspire the reader with the same agreeable sensations. I have aimed, not so much to make a graphic picture of any scene from which a painter might with his brush or pencil obtain a copy on canvas, as, on the other hand, to make the reader feel as he would in the presence of it. I have also confined my descriptions to ordi nary scenes. These alone have been my study. The objects that meet our view in our walks outside of any village in the country, the beauty of a plain cottage and its picturesque in mates, with their baskets of whortleberries and their bundles of dried herbs, and the common trees and shrubs of the forest and the wayside, form the subjects of my essays. From them I have studied the oracles of nature, and in these pages I have given their interpretations as I understand them. Book excerpt: The book that launched environmental history, William Cronon's Changes in the Land, now revised and updated. Winner of the Francis Parkman Prize In this landmark work of environmental history, William Cronon offers an original and profound explanation of the effects European colonists' sense of property and their pursuit of capitalism had upon the ecosystems of New England. Reissued here with an updated afterword by the author and a new preface by the distinguished colonialist John Demos, Changes in the Land, provides a brilliant inter-disciplinary interpretation of how land and people influence one another. With its chilling closing line, "The people of plenty were a people of waste," Cronon's enduring and thought-provoking book is ethno-ecological history at its best.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In New England Fields and Woods It is quite as likely that the Open lands are still under the worn and dusty blanket of snow, smirched with all the litter cast upon it by cross-lot-faring teams, and win try winds blowing for months from every quarter. The same untidiness pervades all outdoors. We could never believe that so many odds and ends could have been thrown out of doors helter-skelter, in three months of ordinary life, till the proof confronts us on the surface of the subsiding snow or lies stranded on the bare earth. The wind comes with an icier breath from the wintrier north, and yet blows untempered from the south, over fields by turns frozen and sodden, through which the swollen brooks rush in yellow torrents with sullen monotonous complaint.
