Book excerpt: A place of great beauty, Thuringland and its tributary states exist on the edge of perilous balance of power, resources, and control. Every aspect of life on Thuringland is connected, but there are those who will risk that precious equilibrium for their own needs. The Dragonlord Seldric, bearer of the all-powerful Dragoncrown, controls the dragons upon which so much of life depends. Their fiery breath produces magical coins, used for both commerce and energy. The dragons protect the realm and enforce control of the tributary lands; all are dependent on them. Life in Thuringland could not exist without the odious burden of slavery, and too many races are considered to be little more than commodities by those in power. In the jungle of Sinjer, a race of proud warriors fights for survival, freedom, and dignity. The Sinjeryan all-female raceleft the world of men behind to free themselves from oppression, but Seldrics demands for tribute women as his protectors and concubines challenges that. As one of the proud Sinjery Dragonflyers, Seldrics present concubine Trallalair will do anything to end her races odious tribute. At Hells Breach, an open portal to the underworld from which demons and zombies threaten all life, poets wielding magical words fight to save their world. When a seemingly unconnected string of events frees the dragons, no one is safe from their wrath. Can brave champions of many races come together to restore the realms balance of power before it is too late?

Download or read book A Carpet Ride to Khiva written by Chris Aslan and published by Icon Books Ltd. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Silk Road conjures images of the exotic and the unknown. Most travellers simply pass along it. Brit Chris Alexander chose to live there. Ostensibly writing a guidebook, Alexander found life at the heart of the glittering madrassahs, mosques and minarets of the walled city of Khiva - a remote desert oasis in Uzbekistan - immensely alluring, and stayed. Immersing himself in the language and rich cultural traditions Alexander discovers a world torn between Marx and Mohammed - a place where veils and vodka, pork and polygamy freely mingle - against a backdrop of forgotten carpet designs, crumbling but magnificent Islamic architecture and scenes drawn straight from "The Arabian Nights". Accompanied by a large green parrot, a ginger cat and his adoptive Uzbek family, Alexander recounts his efforts to rediscover the lost art of traditional weaving and dyeing, and the process establishing a self-sufficient carpet workshop, employing local women and disabled people to train as apprentices. A Carpet Ride to Khiva sees Alexander being stripped naked at a former Soviet youth camp, crawling through silkworm droppings in an attempt to record their life-cycle, holed up in the British Museum discovering carpet designs dormant for half a millennia, tackling a carpet-thieving mayor, distinguishing natural dyes from sacks of opium in Northern Afghanistan, bluffing his way through an impromptu version of "My Heart Will Go On" for national Uzbek TV and seeking sanctuary as an anti-Western riot consumed the Kabul carpet bazaar. It is an unforgettable true travel story of a journey to the heart of the unknown and the unexpected friendship one man found there.

Book Art Deco and Modernist Carpets

Download or read book Art Deco and Modernist Carpets written by Susan Day and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2002-10 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1927, the critic Rene Chavance identified carpet production as the most successful of the decorative arts in achieving 'the more visionary aims of the times'. Susan Day's book, a work of original scholarship accompanied throughout by illustrations both of the carpets themselves and of contemporary interiors, demonstrates that these Art Deco carpets have lost none of their decorative power. A significant number of the carpets are shown precisely as they were meant to be seen, within the rooms for which they were made." "The fruits of the remarkable Art Deco efflorescence throughout Europe form the first part of the book. In the second, the focus turns to the reaction against the artistes-decorateurs by the champions of modernism. In France, the designs of Sonia Delaunay, Eileen Gray and Jean Lurcat evoked collage and Cubism; the Bauhaus and Scandinavia provided different influences. The fashion for abstract and modernist rugs was further stimulated by limited editions of rugs woven from works by such artists as Picasso, Klee and Miro, while in the USA, designers developed a style that was distinctly American." "This visual feast, of appeal not only to carpet collectors and textile specialists but to anyone with an interest in 20th-century design, ranges from the supremely imaginative achievements of Paul Poiret's unique weaving studio, the Ecole Martine, to the Scandinavian folk traditions of Marta Maas-Fjetterstrom, the innovations of Frank Lloyd Wright and Donald Deskey in the USA and Gunta Stolzl's handwoven carpets in Germany. The book's invaluable reference section includes detailed information on artists, manufacturers and retailers, their signatures and monograms, and a glossary and bibliography." --Book Jacket.

Book excerpt: For young readers comfortable reading longer books. Kids 8 - 12 years old. Magali: a shy French marmot who can't resist her funny mountain mates and their crazy, nocturnal, sports adventures! 'Uhm. I need to go out,' said the marmot. The adult marmots whipped their heads around to look at Magali. 'Now? Where?' Magali's papa said. 'The Green Lake.' 'What for?' 'Wakeboarding.' 'Wakeboarding? What's wakeboarding?' 'Uhm. I'm not sure. That's why I have to go. To see.' Magali's mother and father shared a worried glance. Magali's mother sighed. 'Do you think that's a good idea, Magali?' Magali's father put his paw on his wife's arm. 'No. If Magali wants to go out at night to do sports, we said we would allow it.' He looked at his daughter. 'Are there going to be eagles, foxes, and wolves there, Magali?' Magali's voice rose high and squeaky. 'There is a ''No Eating Other Animals At Night'' sports rule! I've told you before!' Actually, the eagles, foxes, and wolves are the least of Magali's concerns. She's got a new problem. She's discovered a another sport, apart from the wakeboarding! This new sport has a group of new friends, separate to her mountain gang (Mishka, Henri Le Hare, F-F-Foxy, Little Foxy, Puppy Bébé and Chamois Luc). Now she has two fun sports to do, and two fun sets of sets of friends to hang out with. But, she's exhausted. She can't keep up. Something has to give! The little marmot has a hard decision to make! A funny middle-grade series about trusting instinct, forging friendships, and learning independence. The books have British spelling. For ages 8-12 yrs. Set in La Plagne, Savoie, France Each book can be read as an individual book or as part of the Dude Series. The series is available in English, French, Spanish, plus bilingual versions (English / français) (English / español). Question for the Author How did you come up with the character of Magali? 'You know, I really love the French Alps, and looking at all the animals that live in the mountains. I'm Australian, so I had never seen a marmot before moving to France. I worked one summer, for a kids' summer camp, and part of my job was to take the children out on walks. We would go looking for marmots, all of us being very quiet, secretly sneaking up to the holes in the ground, where the entrances to the marmot burrows were. Of course, we would make too much noise and the marmots would disappear into their underground tunnels, but sometimes we were lucky and able to take photos. I think their underground homes took over my imagination, and before you knew it, I had a whole chapter book in my head, with Magali as the principal character!'
