Book The Trade and Administration of China Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Trade and Administration of China Classic Reprint written by Hosea Ballou Morse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trade and Administration of China This book is intended to portray the present state of the Chinese Empire, with such record of the past as will show by what process of evolution the existing state has been reached. NO attempt is made to forecast the future, or even to refer to the revolution which, under the name of Reform, has been begun. The development of many centuries is to be recast, and within a year or a generation, according as the pace is forced or not, it will assume an unaccustomed garb; and the China of that future day, near or distant, will not be the China of to-day. Whether this revolution will follow the precedent of the English Revolution or of the French, whether it will proceed by logical development from step to step, or will rush on a headlong course, will depend upon the wisdom and self restraint of the leaders in the government, and in the last resort upon the nature of that public opinion which will be created in the Chinese people. But, just as the history of the England of the Georges cannot be well understood without some knowledge of the Stuart period, and as an acquaintance with the France of the Kingdom and the Empire is necessary to a comprehension of the France of the Third Republic, so also, to understand the China which the student of the future will know, he must be able to study its past. The China Of today is, with minor differences, the China of the past and in this book it is hoped that the future student will find, within the limits of the dozen subjects treated, a succinct account Of the foundation on which the China of the future will be erected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Shanghai: From the Opening of the Port to Foreign Trade There is not much in the way of history to be written of small Foreign Settlements in China which are not yet fifty years old; but during the short time events have happened in Shanghai which imperilled the existence of the place and the times and fortunes of the inhabitants. And a system of Municipal or self-government has been instituted, which is so well adapted to the community, formed of almost all nationalities, and to its relations to the Chinese Government, that it only requires expansion to meet the wants of an increasing population. Since the port of Shanghai was opened to foreign trade in 1843, a British Consul has virtually blockaded the port with a ten-gun sailing brig of war, notwithstanding that his country was at peace with China; the native City has been in the hands of one set of insurgents; and other and more powerful armies of rebels were twice repulsed in their attempts to capture the City and the Settlements. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from China of the Chinese The above general plan, with its broad outlines, represents neither the popular nor the academical method of viewing Chinese history. The former pictures a misty past, in which figures of the great Patriarchs and great Sages, the Builder Of the Great Wall and Burner of Books, with here and there a chivalrous hero, are dimly discerned, and later epochs, of which the knowledge is also misty, known as Augustan Ages of Chinese literature and poetry, all of which are completely overshadowed by the modern periods of foreign intercourse and foreign wars, openings for trade and robbing of territory which, though of historical value, are accorded too large a space in the picture to constitute it a properly proportioned representation of the whole of Chinese history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Trade of China and Japan In contrast to this condition it may he stated that the British Government con sidered ten months-a reasonable period in the case of the writer's investigation in Canada and Newfoundland (1907) and that, in a country of six and a half million inhabitants, intersected with railways, having a common language. Possessing a statistical record of the' activities of her people, and a uniform currency. In view of the difference between both the time allotted to the duty nd the character of the problem presented, I can only hope to re ect the mature judgment of the European community and of leading Chinese upon the prospects of trade with China, and trust that these facts will be borne in mind in considering this report. Book Origin and Progress of the War Between England and China

Download or read book Origin and Progress of the War Between England and China written by John Worth Edmonds and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin and Progress of the War Between England and China: A Lecture Taught as American citizens are, that man is endowed with the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; hav ing early learned, as we have, the lesson that it is the first duty of all governments to permit to each the pursuit of his own happiness in his own way, without intrusion from or molestation to others, we, cannot but regard the conduct of the Chinese Empire toward the other members of the great family of nations, as governed by a kin dred spirit. While other dynasties have arisen and flourished and fell, while other nations have with varied speed passed through the alternations of youth, manhood, and age, the adherence of the Chinese to this great principle, which is thus buried deep in the foundation of our prosperity, has caused century after centu ry to rise upon their empire, flourishing in vigorous activity. In an hour, which may yet be, if it be not already, fraught with immense evil to them, the Chinese so far relaxed from their exclu sive policy as to permit a foreign trade.
