Make Just One Change features the voices and experiences of teachers in classrooms across the country to illustrate the use of the Question Formulation Technique across grade levels and subject areas and with different kinds of learners.
Download or read book The Case against Education written by Bryan Caplan and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why we need to stop wasting public funds on education Despite being immensely popular—and immensely lucrative—education is grossly overrated. Now with a new afterword by Bryan Caplan, this explosive book argues that the primary function of education is not to enhance students' skills but to signal the qualities of a good employee. Learn why students hunt for easy As only to forget most of what they learn after the final exam, why decades of growing access to education have not resulted in better jobs for average workers, how employers reward workers for costly schooling they rarely ever use, and why cutting education spending is the best remedy. Romantic notions about education being "good for the soul" must yield to careful research and common sense—The Case against Education points the way.

Originally published in 1980, How to Learn a Foreign Language is now available on the 50th anniversary of Dr. Pimsleur’s publication of the first of his first audio courses that embodied the concepts and methods found here. This case study deals with these two overarching questions within the context of learning English as a foreign language through drama at a German upper-secondary school in South Tyrol. It investigates how the students see themselves in their roles, how they perceive themselves as users of the foreign language, and how they experience themselves in-role in another language. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Freudian view seemed to be that people consist of Ids, ego's and superego's. People are supposedly also inhabited by something called a subconscious, a mysterious entity with a tendency to think naughty thoughts and keep them a secret from one's conscious self. When this naughty subconscious takes over and controls one's actions - without permission - people become neurotic. If the patient lies on a couch and talks, and a psychiatrist listens, the subconscious might be tricked into revealing itself. Once enticed out into the open by a therapist, the subconscious supposedly looses its power to cause neurosis.

Download or read book International Education and the Chinese Learner written by Janette Ryan and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Education and the Chinese Learner is one of the first full-length studies in the relatively new field of transnational pedagogy to explore the role of the Chinese learner in international schools and universities across the globe. It describes the unprecedented growth of international schools and university exchange programs during the past decade together with the way in which Chinese learners at all levels have taken advantage of these opportunities and have been scrutinized in the process. The results of this internationalization have in some cases solidified stereotypes about Chinese learners and in other instances have helped to overcome those prejudices. Teachers within the international schools comment about the challenges of integrating students from different ethnic and national backgrounds in their schools and about the rewards of developing intercultural programs that will give the students the most substantial, diverse, and ethical education and encourage cross-cultural understanding, build academic skills, and develop character. University teachers ù both Chinese and Western ù describe the opportunities and challenges for cross-cultural teaching and learning within the classrooms of their own countries and in global classrooms where local and international teachers together advance new perspectives based on team teaching, interdisciplinarity, and intercultural enquiry. Teachers within international schools and university and school teachers who teach exchange students and other international students will find the understanding, experiences, and practical advice to be of help in their own teaching, but those within international business communities may well find the research helpful in understanding their own intercultural environments. Janette Ryan is a lecturer in education at Monash University. She specializes in cross-cultural teaching and teaching for international students. She is a Mandarin Chinese speaker and works with a network of schools and universities across China on curriculum reform and professional learning communities. Gordon Slethaug is a visiting professor in English studies and communications at the University of Southern Denmark and has previously been professor of English at the University of Waterloo, Canada and director of American Studies at the University of Hong Kong. He has recently been visiting Lingnan professor at the University of Hong Kong and Sun Yat-sen University in China and senior Fulbright professor at the University of Southern Denmark.

Part Two focuses on challenges involved in researching the processes of teaching and learning in the second and foreign languages classroom, both with respect to research methodology and efforts to tap some variables impinging upon the effects of instruction. Finally, Part Three is devoted to challenges involved in second and foreign language teacher education, the quality of which to a large extent determines the outcomes of second language education in any educational context.
