Book excerpt: "Eureka!" In an age of open-mindedness, many believers accept too much with too little discernment, resulting in great confusion and compromise. But God's Word makes it clear that not everything that glitters is gold. False teaching is at every turn, and the temptation to embrace it is great. As God's people we are called to sift through the overwhelming number of traditions and trends and use the truth of Scripture to determine which are the true treasures-and which are "fool's gold." General editor John MacArthur and the contributors of this uncompromising book define the principles of biblical discernment and use them to address several contemporary Christian issues. They provide straightforward, biblical critiques of some popular but unfortunate Christian trends, such as watered-down preaching and doctrinally questionable best-selling books. Dr. MacArthur ends with a practical plan for cultivating discernment in the Christian life. It is the duty of every Christian-not just pastors and elders-to follow the biblical command to cling to what is good and to reject what is not. This book will equip you with a foundation for biblical discernment that will enable you to make careful distinctions in your thinking about truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present publication forms part of a projected book that F. P. Ramsey drafted but never completed. It survived among his papers and ultimately came into the possession of the University of Pittsburgh in the circumstances detailed in the Editor's Introduction. Our hope in issuing this work at this stage - some sixty years after Ramsey's premature death at the age of 26 - is both to provide yet another token of his amazing philosophical creativity, and also to make available an important datum for the still to be written history of the development of philosophical analysis. This is a book whose appearance will, we hope and expect, be appreciated both by those interested in linguistic philosophy itself and by those concerned for its historical development in the present century. EDITORS'INTRODUCTION 1. THE RAMSEY COLLECTION Frank Plump ton Ramsey (22 February 1903 -19 January 1930) was an extra ordinary scholarly phenomenon. Son of a distinguished mathematician and President of Magdalene College, Cambridge and brother of Arthur Michael, eventual Archbishop of Canterbury, Ramsey was closely connected with Cambridge throughout his life, ultimately becoming lecturer in Mathematics in the University. Notwithstanding his great mathematical talent, it was primarily logic and philosophy that engaged his interests, and he wrote original and important contributions to logic, semantics, epistomology, probability theory, philosophy of science, and economics, in addition to seminal work in the foundations of mathematics.

Book Four Fools in the Age of Reason

Download or read book Four Fools in the Age of Reason written by Dorinda Outram and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unveiling the nearly lost world of the court fools of eighteenth-century Germany, Dorinda Outram shows that laughter was an essential instrument of power. Whether jovial or cruel, mirth altered social and political relations. Outram takes us first to the court of Frederick William I of Prussia, who emerges not only as an administrative reformer and notorious militarist but also as a "master of fools," a ruler who used fools to prop up his uncertain power. The autobiography of the itinerant fool Peter Prosch affords a rare insider’s view of the small courts in Catholic south Germany, Austria, and Bavaria. Full of sharp observations of prelates and princes, the autobiography also records episodes of the extraordinary cruelty for which the German princely courts were notorious. Joseph Fröhlich, court fool in Dresden, presents more appealing facets of foolery. A sharp salesman and hero of the Meissen factories, he was deeply attached to the folk life of fooling. The book ends by tying the growth of Enlightenment skepticism to the demise of court foolery around 1800. Outram’s book is invaluable for giving us such a vivid depiction of the court fool and especially for revealing how this figure can shed new light on the wielding of power in Enlightenment Europe.

Book Fools Are Everywhere

  • Author : Beatrice K. Otto
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2001-04
  • ISBN : 0226640914
  • Pages : 444 pages

Download or read book Fools Are Everywhere written by Beatrice K. Otto and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2001-04 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this lively work, Beatrice K. Otto takes us on a journey around the world in search of one of the most colorful characters in history—the court jester. Though not always clad in cap and bells, these witty, quirky characters crop up everywhere, from the courts of ancient China and the Mogul emperors of India to those of medieval Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas. With a wealth of anecdotes, jokes, quotations, epigraphs, and illustrations (including flip art), Otto brings to light little-known jesters, highlighting their humanizing influence on people with power and position and placing otherwise remote historical figures in a more idiosyncratic, intimate light. Most of the work on the court jester has concentrated on Europe; Otto draws on previously untranslated classical Chinese writings and other sources to correct this bias and also looks at jesters in literature, mythology, and drama. Written with wit and humor, Fools Are Everywhere is the most comprehensive look at these roguish characters who risked their necks not only to mock and entertain but also to fulfill a deep and widespread human and social need.

People want to be connected with, used, loved, if only privately by an exclusive person or set of people. We want to be read like books because we write ourselves like books; narratives of character, theme, plot. And we read ourselves, too, what weve written in our minds. Its scary, says Ana; her brow coldly sweats. Imagine its a dreamscape, I say, squinching. The trees are sleepwalkers. They sway and breathe. Their canopies are the umbragical skulls of scatterbrained giants. from Fools

Book Between Truth and Illusion

Download or read book Between Truth and Illusion written by John O'Loughlin and published by Centretruths Digital Media. This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mr O'Loughlin's first exercise in philosophy, dating from 1977, takes as its starting-point an analysis of the inter-relativity of dualities and expands, via a series of aphoristic essays and dramatic lessons, towards a dialogue climax in which the two - inevitably! - characters discuss the implications of a dualistic philosophy both as it impacts on theory and practice. Although the author didn't realize it at the time, truth and illusion are a lot closer together than may at first appear to be the case, even if one doesn't necessarily have to get between them!

Book Shakespeare and laughter

Download or read book Shakespeare and laughter written by Indira Ghose and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines laughter in the Shakespearean theatre, in the context of a cultural history of early modern laughter. Aimed at an informed readership as well as graduate students and scholars in the field of Shakespeare studies, it is the first study to focus specifically on laughter, not comedy. It looks at various strands of the early modern discourse on laughter, ranging from medical treatises and courtesy manuals to Puritan tracts and jestbook literature. It argues that few cultural phenomena have undergone as radical a change in meaning as laughter. Laughter became bound up with questions of taste and class identity. At the same time, humanist thinkers revalorised the status of recreation and pleasure. These developments left their trace on the early modern theatre, where laughter was retailed as a commodity in an emerging entertainment industry. Shakespeare ́s plays both reflect and shape these changes, particularly in his adaptation of the Erasmian wise fool as a stage figure, and in the sceptical strain of thought that is encapsulated in the laughter evoked in the plays.
