Heaving a sigh of real and supreme satisfaction, I betook myself to an easy-chair by the fireside and there gloated over the remembrance of the furore my precious Tea - the Emperor's Tea - had created. I fell asleep dreamed that I was dining with His Excellency in the Imperial Palace - and steeping myself in luxurious enjoy ment of his Tea. It was late afternoon when I awoke. I walked lazily towards the pantry, calling Mary, the Queen of my Kitchen, as I went. As I passed the cupboard, my glance fell upon an open tin; mechanically, I closed the lid, wondering why half of the contents had disappeared. It was a cheap and most distasteful brand of tea, and I had never been able to use it after the first trial. I would tell Mary to consign it to the garbage can. Then my eye wandered to the upper shelf, where, in regal state, reposed the unassuming little box containing the Mikado's Tea. Instinctively, I moved nearer. The paper wrapping was unbroken. Book excerpt: The century after the conquests of Timur witnessed the division of eastern and western Iran between his Turko-Mongol successors, and a flowering of Persian culture in the great cities of Herat, Samarqand and Tabriz, among others. In this, the ninth volume in The Idea of Iran series, leading scholars analyse the ways that Timurid contemporaries viewed their traditions and their environment, asking questions such as: what was the view of outsiders, and how does modern scholarship define the distinctive aspects of the period? Essential reading for scholars, students, and all those interested in the history of Iran, the book considers the political, religious and cultural history of this rich and highly productive interval that was the springboard for the formation of new imperial Ottoman, Safavid, Mughal and Ozbek orders of succeeding centuries.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Focus, Vol. 9: March, 1919 Thrown on his own resources for entertainment, Kenneth dug his hand deep into his trouser pocket and drew out a handful of corn. He fingered it speculatively for a moment. Directly in front of him sat Marjorie Norman. Kenneth held rather an ex alted opinion of Marjorie. Of course she screamed when she saw a worm and indulged in many other feminine weaknesses that he held in contempt, but somehow these things did not seem altogether as silly in Marjorie as they did in other girls. She had such a sweet, appealing manner that Kenneth was always glad when he had the opportunity to protect her from any dreadful bugaboos - and incidentally to show off his own bravery. Acting on. A generous impulse Kenneth divided his corn in two parts and leaning over his desk he laid half in a little heap on Marjorie's desk. Marjorie glanced at him through her curls and smiled shyly, but not in the least comprehensively. Pocketing his own corn Kenneth settled back in his seat and buried himself in his history book. A minute later something whizzed within an inch of Miss Allen's head, hit the blackboard and rebounded on her desk. It was a grain of corn. Book Bending History

  • Author : Martin S. Indyk
  • Publisher : Brookings Institution Press

Download or read book Bending History written by Martin S. Indyk and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2013-09-04 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time of Barack Obama's inauguration as the 44th president of the United States, he had already developed an ambitious foreign policy vision. By his own account, he sought to bend the arc of history toward greater justice, freedom, and peace; within a year he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, largely for that promise. In Bending History, Martin Indyk, Kenneth Lieberthal, and Michael O’Hanlon measure Obama not only against the record of his predecessors and the immediate challenges of the day, but also against his own soaring rhetoric and inspiring goals. Bending History assesses the considerable accomplishments as well as the failures and seeks to explain what has happened. Obama's best work has been on major and pressing foreign policy challenges—counterterrorism policy, including the daring raid that eliminated Osama bin Laden; the "reset" with Russia; managing the increasingly significant relationship with China; and handling the rogue states of Iran and North Korea. Policy on resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, however, has reflected serious flaws in both strategy and execution. Afghanistan policy has been plagued by inconsistent messaging and teamwork. On important "softer" security issues—from energy and climate policy to problems in Africa and Mexico—the record is mixed. As for his early aspiration to reshape the international order, according greater roles and responsibilities to rising powers, Obama's efforts have been well-conceived but of limited effectiveness. On issues of secondary importance, Obama has been disciplined in avoiding fruitless disputes (as with Chavez in Venezuela and Castro in Cuba) and insisting that others take the lead (as with Qaddafi in Libya). Notwithstanding several missteps, he has generally managed well the complex challenges of the Arab awakenings, striving to strike the right balance between U.S. values and interests. The authors see Obama's foreign policy to date as a triumph of discipline and realism over ideology. He has been neither the transformative beacon his devotees have wanted, nor the weak apologist for America that his critics allege. They conclude that his grand strategy for promoting American interests in a tumultuous world may only now be emerging, and may yet be curtailed by conflict with Iran. Most of all, they argue that he or his successor will have to embrace U.S. economic renewal as the core foreign policy and national security challenge of the future.

This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume of the series «Iissiidiology Fundamentals» is a reasonable consequence of consideration of biological mixtum NUU-VVU-Form-Types that was started in the previous volume. For our deeper understanding, it draws our attention even more at iissiidiological approach to the matters, which are related discretely by contemporary scientific community to philosophic anthropology in general and to behavior theories of personality in particular. At more objective, transcendent, gabitual (primordial, objectively deep) discussion, it becomes clear that the given material leads a reader maximally to objectivization of own conceptions about relations among personalized, unconscious, and subconscious levels of Self-Consciousness at the background of developing invizusal (imperceptible by our sensor systems and measuring devices) mechanisms of anatomy and brain neurophysiology, accompanied by dominant dynamics of the first IISSIIDI-Centers pair.

Book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster

Download or read book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster written by Bill Gates and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • In this urgent, authoritative book, Bill Gates sets out a wide-ranging, practical—and accessible—plan for how the world can get to zero greenhouse gas emissions in time to avoid a climate catastrophe. Bill Gates has spent a decade investigating the causes and effects of climate change. With the help of experts in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, political science, and finance, he has focused on what must be done in order to stop the planet's slide to certain environmental disaster. In this book, he not only explains why we need to work toward net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases, but also details what we need to do to achieve this profoundly important goal. He gives us a clear-eyed description of the challenges we face. Drawing on his understanding of innovation and what it takes to get new ideas into the market, he describes the areas in which technology is already helping to reduce emissions, where and how the current technology can be made to function more effectively, where breakthrough technologies are needed, and who is working on these essential innovations. Finally, he lays out a concrete, practical plan for achieving the goal of zero emissions—suggesting not only policies that governments should adopt, but what we as individuals can do to keep our government, our employers, and ourselves accountable in this crucial enterprise. As Bill Gates makes clear, achieving zero emissions will not be simple or easy to do, but if we follow the plan he sets out here, it is a goal firmly within our reach.
