Book excerpt: Four seventh-grade girls meet in the big city and learn to embrace new experiences while keeping the best parts of home with them in this sweet middle grade novel—from the author of The Last Tree Town and If This Were a Story. With the arrival of a glossy, cream-colored envelope in the mail, Elena Martinez’s dreams come true: she’s been chosen for the Spread Your Wings Magazine’s Young Flyers program—a week-long summer internship where she’ll get to learn the ins and outs of working for the most popular teen magazine. She heads to New York City, anxious to get away from her best friend, Summer, who is suddenly spending a lot time with another girl from school and being secretive about it. Once there Elena meets her fellow Young Flyers: Harlow, who can get to the bottom of any story, Whitney, who has spot-on fashion sense, and Cailin, a social media star with thousands of followers and an eye for photography. As the four new friends explore the city that never sleeps, each girl brings a piece of home, and a few secrets, with them and learns that no one’s life is as glossy as it may appear. But with courage, teamwork, and lots of passion, there’s no stopping a Flyer.

Book Doomi Golo The Hidden Notebooks

Download or read book Doomi Golo The Hidden Notebooks written by Boubacar Boris Diop and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first novel to be translated from Wolof to English, Doomi Golo—The Hidden Notebooks is a masterful work that conveys the story of Nguirane Faye and his attempts to communicate with his grandson before he dies. With a narrative structure that beautifully imitates the movements of a musical piece, Diop relates Faye’s trauma of losing his only son, Assane Tall, which is compounded by his grandson Badou’s migration to an unknown destination. While Faye feels certain that his grandson will return one day, he also is convinced that he will no longer be alive by then. Faye spends his days sitting under a mango tree in the courtyard of his home, reminiscing and observing his surroundings. He speaks to Badou through his seven notebooks, six of which are revealed to the reader, while the seventh, the “Book of Secrets,” is highly confidential and reserved for Badou’s eyes only. In the absence of letters from Badou, the notebooks form the only possible means of communication between the two, carrying within them tunes and repetitions that give this novel its unusual shape: loose and meandering on the one hand, coherent and tightly interwoven on the other. Translated by Vera Wülfing-Leckie and El Hadji Moustapha Diop.

Book excerpt: No Sleepis a visual history of the halcyon days of New York City club life as told through flyer art. Spanning the late 80s through the late 90s, when nightlife buzz travelled via flyers and word of mouth,No Sleepfeatures a collection of artwork from the personal archives of NYC DJs, promoters, club kids, nightlife impresarios, and the artists themselves. Club flyers, by design, were ephemeral objects distributed on street corners, outside of nightclubs and concert halls, in barbershops and retail shops, and were not intended to be preserved for posterity. Through the 90s, they became both increasingly prevalent and more sophisticated as printing technology evolved. Overnight, however, with the advent of the internet, theflyer essentially disappeared, despite it being common at one time for promoters to print thousands of flyers for any given event. Recently, these flyers have become sought-after collector's items.

Book excerpt: All my life, I’ve loved to read mysteries. Nancy Drew and her adventures were my inspiration. From travelling on trains to performing on TV shows, her life has been nothing but a constant mystery packed with fun memories and that’s what I have always wanted.Reading is an escape from this world and when I started, I wanted everyone to read. I even joined a book club when I was in 3d grade. It was an amazing experience with a lot of friends, restaurant visits and book conversations. But what I really wanted, was for my brother to read a book. At first, it was the spy novels ranging from books that I liked from the Barnes and Noble website to random books picked up from my kindle. As we both watched spy movies like Johnny English and shows like KC undercover, a spy’s active life intrigued me and slowly a novel started forming in my head.It started in 6th grade. After a visit from an author from the Jaipur Literature Festival, I pulled out my special notebook and jotted down 2 pages of a story with my red pen. Grabbing the name from one of favorite books, that was the day Cassidy was born.Clearly I had no idea what I was doing. By seventh grade, I had written about a whole 28 pages! Reading the novel to my friends in the middle of classes, I was constantly getting excited by the thought of it being published. With school and friendships, Cassidy slowly faded away. Nancy Drew and other mystery novels like 13 envelopes entered into my life and for a while, I put my special notebook away in the drawer waiting for the right moment to continue. Days, months and years passed by and Cassidy became a goal I was waiting to achieve. Then, one day, during my boards, my teacher told me a story. Time has, was and is always a commodity for me and here, she was discussing the end of it all: death. With my dog dying, her story about her friend passing away on the highway on her bike and just reading about death, I decided it was time to finish my biggest goal: Write Cassidy Silver stone. The next month was one of the most intense months of my life. Spending an hour writing nearly 4 pages a day, I was done. I’d completed Cassidy Silver stone! My first Novel. Now that I think back, to Zendaya, Totally spies and all those mystery, writing, adventure books that I have read, Cassidy became an adventure, a journey to create the story of my dreams and make it come true.

Book Contested Spaces of Teaching and Learning

Download or read book Contested Spaces of Teaching and Learning written by Janise Hurtig and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contested Spaces of Teaching and Learning examines the educational experiences of adults as cultural practice. These practices take place in diverse settings from formal educational contexts to institutionally interstitial realms to fluid and explicitly contested everyday spaces. This edited collection includes twelve richly rendered ethnographic case studies written from the perspective of practitioner-ethnographers who straddle the roles of educator and ethnographic researcher. Drawing on distinct theoretical framings, these contributors illuminate the ways in which adults engaged in teaching and learning participate in cultural practices that intersect with other dimensions of social life, such as work, recreation, community engagement, personal development, or political action. By juxtaposing ethnographic inquiries of formal and informal learning spaces, as well as intentional and unintended challenges to mainstream adult teaching and learning, this collection provides new understandings and critical insights into the complexities of adults’ educational experiences.

Book The Poetry Handbook

Download or read book The Poetry Handbook written by John Lennard and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-01-06 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Poetry Handbook is a lucid and entertaining guide to the poet's craft, and an invaluable introduction to practical criticism for students. Chapters on each element of poetry, from metre to gender, offer a wide-ranging general account, and end by looking at two or three poems from a small group (including works by Donne, Elizabeth Bishop, Geoffrey Hill, and Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott), to build up sustained analytical readings. Thorough and compact, with notes and quotations supplemented by detailed reference to the Norton Anthology of Poetry and a companion website with texts, links, and further discussion, The Poetry Handbook is indispensable for all school and undergraduate students of English. A final chapter addresses examinations of all kinds, and sample essays by undergraduates are posted on the website. Critical and scholarly terms are italicised and clearly explained, both in the text and in a complete glossary; the volume also includes suggestions for further reading. The first edition, widely praised by teachers and students, showed how the pleasures of poetry are heightened by rigorous understanding and made that understanding readily available. This second edition — revised, expanded, updated, and supported by a new companion website - confirm The Poetry Handbook as the best guide to poetry available in English.
