Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Washington Cable (October 12, 1844 - January 31, 1925) was an American novelist notable for the realism of his portrayals of Creole life in his native New Orleans, Louisiana. He has been called "the most important southern artist working in the late 19th century", as well as "the first modern Southern writer." In his treatment of racism, mixed-race families and miscegenation, his fiction has been thought to anticipate that of William Faulkner. He also wrote articles critical of contemporary society. Due to hostility against him after two 1885 essays encouraging racial equality and opposing Jim Crow, Cable moved with his family to Northampton, Massachusetts. He lived there for the next thirty years, then moved to Florida.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1908. The book begins: For the scene of this narrative please take into mind a wide quarter-circle of country, such as any of the pretty women we are to know in it might have covered on the map with her half-opened fan. Let its northernmost corner be Vicksburg, the famous, on the Mississippi. Let the easternmost be Mobile, and let the most southerly and by far the most important, that pivotal corner of the fan from which all its folds radiate and where the whole pictured thing opens and shuts, be New Orleans. Then let the grave moment that gently ushers us in be a long-ago afternoon in the Louisiana Delta. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

I will build on it a comedy higher, finer, than tragedy. That's what life is for; mine, yours, the world's, ' he said to me. Mr. Chester, you can imagine how a daughter would love a father like that, and also how mamma loved him--for years--before they could marry." "Your mother was a Creole, I suppose?" "No, mamma was French. After grand'mere had followed grandpere--above--papa, looking up some of the once employees of T. Chapdelaine & Son, to raise the old concern back to life, arranged with them that while they should reinstitute it here he would go live in France, close to the producers of the finest goods possible. You see? And he did that many years with a kind of success; but smaller and smaller, because little by little the taste for those refinements was passing, while those department stores and all that kind of thing--you understand--h'm?" The train stopped in Rampart Street, and when one aunt, with madame, and one with monsieur, had followed the junior pair out of the snarlings and hootings of Canal Street's automobiles and to the quiet sidewalks of the old quarter---- "Well?" said Chester, slowing down, and---- "Well," said Aline, "about mamma: ah, 'tis wonderful how they were suited to each other, those two. Almost from the first of his living there, in France, they were acquainted and much together. She was of a fine ancestry, but without fortune; everything lost in the German war, eighteen seventy. They were close neighbor to a convent very famous for its wonderful work of the needle and of the bobbin. 'Twas there she received her education. And she and papa could have married any time if he could promise to stay always there, in France. But the business couldn't assure that; and so, for years and years, you see?" "Yes, I see." "But then, all at once, almost in a day, mamma, she found herself an orphan, with no inheritance...

His birthplace, the small town of Lebanon, in southeastern Connecticut, is situ ated in a thickly settled region of great natural beauty. The clear, rocky streams of the Yantic, the Thames, and lesser waters, hurrying among its green, stone-walled hills, slender woods and fence-rows and flowery meadows, yield abundant mill-power to a strong-armed, strong-minded population habituated from long-gone genera tions to give their best energies, in material as well as in intangible things, to the development of their secondary and higher values. North ward and southward from it, an easy hour's drive either way, shine by summer day and winter night the countless factory windows of Willi mantic and Norwich. Download or read book Creole Days written by George Washington Cable and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-03-13 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While romantic in plot, the stories revealed the multi-cultural and multi-racial nature of antebellum New Orleans society, with ties among French, Spanish, African, Native American and Caribbean Creoles. He also addressed conflicts that arose following the Louisiana Purchase, when traditional New Orleans Creoles of color had to confront Anglo-Americans, who ultimately asserted their concept of a biracial society, rather than acknowledging the multi-racial class of free people of color.
