Book Plants of Western New South Wales

Download or read book Plants of Western New South Wales written by G. M. Cunningham and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now back in print. Plants of Western New South Wales grew from the long experience and expertise which the authors acquired during their employment with their respective organisations in the arid and semi-arid pastoral areas of the State. Each author became aware of the need for a comprehensive record illustrating and describing the great array of plants in the area. The need was identified both for people involved in research and advisory services, and particularly for the landholders who need to manage the plants for their livelihood. The book is a landmark because it draws together all of the existing knowledge of plants from the area, adds to it the extensive collections and research of the authors and presents the whole as a comprehensive collation and description of the plants of the dry pastoral portion of the State. Because of its comprehensive nature, the work is significant to pastoralists and people concerned with plants throughout Australia. The 1992 edition of Plants of Western New South Wales has been reprinted and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING with a one page appendix giving website addresses of various herbaria in Australia where the reader can readily access up-to-date information on botanical name changes.

Book Illustrated Guide to the Trees and Flowers of England and Wales Classic Reprint

Download or read book Illustrated Guide to the Trees and Flowers of England and Wales Classic Reprint written by Hampden Gurney Jameson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Guide to the Trees and Flowers of England and Wales This book is intended to help the ordinary nature-lover, who may perhaps have little or no special knowledge of botany, to find out the names of such trees and flowers as he meets with. If knowing the name, he will turn for further information to one of the larger works mentioned below, so much the better, but the name must come first. With plants, as with human beings, the first step towards a friendship, with all its future possibilities of interest and delight, is to learn your friend's name. No doubt even ignorant people get some sort of enjoyment out of nature, but it makes all the difference in the world to the pleasure of a country walk when, on every hedge-bank and in every ditch, we catch sight of familiar acquaintances, which we have learnt to greet by name, and to recognize as friends. The method of using the illustrated "Key" is explained in Part IV. Of course, several Keys exist already, such as the excellent one in Bentham's "British Flora," but these are mostly couched in very technical language, and often presuppose more skill and experience than the beginner has at his command. In the present work technical terms are avoided as far as possible, and the Key is founded on plain and easily observed characters, and such as do not involve dissection. But the special feature of the book lies in the illustrations accompanying the text, which help to make its meaning clear at a glance. These figures are necessarily very small, and do not pretend to be complete pictures of the plants, but simply to illustrate the special characters used for the Key. By far the greater number of them were drawn direct from nature, for the particular purpose to which they are here applied. The method of the Key allows the groups of Trees and Shrubs, and the Aquatic Plants, to be treated by themselves, and thus makes it possible to identify most of these without depending on their flowers, which are so often difficult to examine, or absent. In short, the book aims especially at being practical, without, it is hoped, forfeiting all claim to be scientific. It tries to help the learner very much as a botanical friend might do, by pointing out, to the eye and the understanding at once, such characteristics as are found, by actual experience, to be easily recognized and remembered. The first draft of the Key was written more than twenty years ago, and almost every part of it has been altered and amended to meet practical difficulties. Book The Moss Flora of Britain and Ireland

Download or read book The Moss Flora of Britain and Ireland written by A. J. E. Smith and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-23 with total page 1030 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and illustrates in detail the 760 species of mosses currently known to occur in the British Isles and incorporates the most up-to-date information available on classification and nomenclature, together with recent synonyms. The species descriptions provide information on frequency, ecology, geographical relationships and distribution, including information on protected species and those species at risk. For many species there are footnotes to aid identification. In addition to the species descriptions there are descriptions of families and genera and also introductory information on conservation, collection, preservation and examination of material, together with advice on using the keys. An artificial key to genera provides the only workable comprehensive key published in the English language. This second edition incorporates the very considerable advances in our knowledge of mosses made in the last quarter of the twentieth century and will provide a unique resource for all concerned with these fascinating organisms.

Book Flora of the Hunter Region

Download or read book Flora of the Hunter Region written by Stephen Bell and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hunter Region, between the Hawkesbury and Manning rivers in eastern New South Wales, hosts a rich diversity of vegetation, with many species found nowhere else. Spanning an area from the coast to the tablelands and slopes, its rainforests, wet and dry sclerophyll forests, woodlands, heathlands, grasslands and swamps are known for their beauty and ecological significance. Flora of the Hunter Region describes 54 endemic trees and large shrubs, combining art and science in a manner rarely seen in botanical identification guides. Species accounts provide information on distribution, habitat, flowering, key diagnostic features and conservation status, along with complete taxonomic descriptions. Each account includes stunning botanical illustrations produced by graduates of the University of Newcastle's Bachelor of Natural History Illustration program. The illustrations depict key diagnostic features and allow complete identification of each species. This publication will be a valuable resource for those interested in the plants of the region, including researchers, environmental consultants, horticulturalists and gardeners, bush walkers, herbaria, and others involved in land management.
