Download or read book The Flora of Algeria Classic Reprint written by Alfred Samuel Gubb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flora of Algeria Visitors naturally Wish to know the names ofthe principal forms of plant life and as no simple, illustrated work of the kind seems to have been published, I have arranged this series of photographs of tree foliage and owering shrubs which, aided by a few words of explanation, will enable them to be readily identified. This collection has no scientific pretensions, comprising as it does, merely the common trees, shrubs etc. To be seen in the course of a day's ramble. It was hardly possible to include many field owers because their name is legion and it seemed unnecessary to reproduce certain garden shrubs, such as the Poinsettia (large scarlet stars), the Plumbago (pale blue), the fragrant Jasmine, etc. Not to mention the numerous varieties of the genus Rose which blossom the winter through. Book Agricultural Explorations in Algeria Classic Reprint

Download or read book Agricultural Explorations in Algeria Classic Reprint written by Thomas Henry Kearney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Explorations in Algeria While the agricultural explorers sent out by this Office are as a rule, sent for the purpose Of securing some Special seeds or plants desired for introduction into the United States, they are also expected to make themselves as familiar as possible with the agricultural prac tices Of the countries they visit and with the crops that succeed under the conditions described. That some Of the practices Observed may be profitably followed in those parts Of the United States having simi lar soil and climatic conditions is more than probable, and that certain Of these crops will prove useful has already been demonstrated. The American farmer Of to-day wants to know what is being done elsewhere, and he is especially interested in hearing how other people meet difficulties Similar to those with which he has to contend. The reports Of our agricultural explorers, we believe, will therefore fill a distinct place in agricultural literature. This report points out clearly the close similarity in climate existing between certain portions Of the Southwestern States and Algeria, making it plain that we must look to that country for the introduction Of many useful plants into our arid and semiarid districts. We have, indeed, already availed ourselves Of the opportunities thus Offered. The date palms SO far secured have come largely from Alge ria; certain grains from that country, now being tested, give promise Of unusual value; and the writers Of this report brought back a quan tity Of alfalfa seed from salt-resistant plants, which has already been tested and gives promise Of decided usefulness in Arizona and Cali formia. Book Algeria in Others Languages

Download or read book Algeria in Others Languages written by Anne-Emmanuelle Berger and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades the superimposition of languages in Algeria has had growing cultural and political consequences. The relations between identity and language, already complicated before independence, became all the more entangled after 1962 when the new state imposed standard Arabic as the sole national language. The vernacular brand of Arabic spoken by the majority of the population--as well as Berber, spoken by an important minority--were denied legitimacy. Moreover, French, the colonial language, continued to be important all the while that its position changed. The violence that ensued in the late 1980s cannot be fully understood without considering the politics of language. This timely book is devoted to Algeria's linguistic predicament and the underlying disagreements over notions of identity, power, and belonging. What problems arise when a new national language is adopted by a postcolonial state? How does the status of the former colonial language change? What becomes of the original "mother tongue(s)" of the populace? The authors of Algeria in Others' Languages address these questions as they explore the historical, cultural, and philosophical significance of language in Algeria, and its relation to issues of politics and gender. Their topics range from analyses of political violence to the status of the principal of evidence in the legal system to the place of "Francophonie" in the 1990s.The authors represent the fields of literature, history, sociology, sociolinguistics, and postcolonial and gender studies; some are also historical players in Algeria's linguistic debates.

Book excerpt: Flora of Madeira is the first book to describe fully all of the vascular plants of the Madeiran and Salvage Islands. It covers over 1360 species of native and naturalized plants, many of them little known. A high proportion of taxa, some 16%, are endemic to the islands themselves or are restricted to Macaronesia (the collective name for the archipelagos of the Azores, Madeira, Salvages, Canaries and Cape Verdes). Isolated from other land-masses, the Madeiran islands are botanically rich and diverse, and the rugged and beautiful landscape embraces a broad range of habitats. Madeira also contains the most extensive remaining areas of laurisilva, the evergreen forest which is the last representative of the ancient Tethyan forests of S. Europe and N. Africa. The remote Salvage Islands have a smaller but equally interesting flora. Flora provides descriptions and keys for taxa at all levels, as well as information on habitats, distributions and flowering times. Local names are also cited. Fifty-seven plates of original drawings illustrate 212 of the Madeiran and Macaronesian endemic taxa, some of them depicted for the first time. Introductory chapters describe the geography of the islands, the main vegetation types and the extensive measures being implemented to conserve this unique flora. Flora of Madeira is the only fully comprehensive publication on the wild flora of the Madeiran and Salvage Islands, for use as both a reference work and a field guide. This book is a digital reprint of ISBN 0-11-310017-5 (1994).

  • Author : Londa Schiebinger

Download or read book Plants and Empire written by Londa Schiebinger and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plants seldom figure in the grand narratives of war, peace, or even everyday life yet they are often at the center of high intrigue. In the eighteenth century, epic scientific voyages were sponsored by European imperial powers to explore the natural riches of the New World, and uncover the botanical secrets of its people. Bioprospectors brought back medicines, luxuries, and staples for their king and country. Risking their lives to discover exotic plants, these daredevil explorers joined with their sponsors to create a global culture of botany. But some secrets were unearthed only to be lost again. In this moving account of the abuses of indigenous Caribbean people and African slaves, Schiebinger describes how slave women brewed the "peacock flower" into an abortifacient, to ensure that they would bear no children into oppression. Yet, impeded by trade winds of prevailing opinion, knowledge of West Indian abortifacients never flowed into Europe. A rich history of discovery and loss, Plants and Empire explores the movement, triumph, and extinction of knowledge in the course of encounters between Europeans and the Caribbean populations.
