Download or read book The Persuasive Actor written by Milan Dragicevich and published by Hackett Publishing. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A must-have for all actors who encounter speeches that are longer than three sentences. On the surface, that would be classic works from Sophocles through Shakespeare—with the 17th and 18th centuries thrown in. Dig deeper and the book’s value to actors of modern and contemporary drama is inescapable. Ibsen, Shaw, Williams, Miller, Shepard, Wilson, Kushner, and Suzan-Lori Parks all wrote plays that are filled with powerful rhetorical devices that demand lively, thorough, and specific consideration. This book is a guide that unfolds the mysteries of classical rhetoric in a clear, concise, and effective manner, a book for speakers who want to move their audiences. It is aimed at actors, but also belongs on the shelf of lawyers, advertising copywriters, and, of course, public officials. I will use it in my classes and workshops and enthusiastically recommended it to all actors and actor trainers." —Leslie Reidel, Department of Theatre, University of Delaware
Download or read book Sermons for Lent and the Easter Season written by Saint Bernard (of Clairvaux) and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sermons of Bernard of Clairvaux evoke the inner conversion of the human person who is open to the Word/words, the external conversion that is submission to the obedience of community life, and, finally, the personal recognition of the true nature of the divine Word. This volume contains Saint Bernard's sermons for the liturgical seasons of Lent and Easter. Included are sermons for the Purification, Septuagesima, the feast of Saint Benedict, and the feast of the Annunciation, all of which are interpreted by Bernard in light of the paschal mystery. In the sermons for Lent, especially, one gets to know a more hesitant and searching Bernard than appears in his other liturgical sermons. This volume is the third of a projected five volumes of Bernard's liturgical sermons.
Download or read book How I Became Hettie Jones written by Hettie Jones and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A thoughtful, intimate memoir of life in the burgeoning movement of new jazz, poetry, and politics . . . in Lower Manhattan in the late 1950s and early 1960s” (Alix Kate Shulman, The Nation). Greenwich Village in the 1950s was a haven to which young poets, painters, and musicians flocked. Among them was Hettie Cohen, who’d been born into a middle-class Jewish family in Queens and who’d chosen to cross racial barriers to marry African American poet LeRoi Jones. This is her reminiscence of life in the awakening East Village in the era of the Beats, Black Power, and bohemia. “As the wife of controversial black playwright-poet LeRoi Jones (now Amiri Baraka), Hettie Cohen, a white Jew from Queens, NY, plunged into the Greenwich Village bohemia of jazz, poetry, leftish politics and underground publishing in the late 1950s. Their life together ended in 1965, partly, she implies, because of separatist pressures on blacks to end their interracial marriages. In this restrained autobiographical mix of introspection and gossip, the author writes of coping with racial prejudice and violence, raising two daughters, and of living in the shadow of her husband. When the couple divorced, she became a children’s book author and poet. The memoir is dotted with glimpses of Allen Ginsberg, Thelonious Monk, Jack Kerouac, Frank O’Hara, Billie Holiday, James Baldwin, Franz Kline, among others.” —Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How It All Began. She lay motionless across the bed; her legs still spread apart and hanging off, onto the floor. Her body was bruised, bleeding and racked with pain. She slowly managed to push herself backwards, off the bed and onto the floor. Down on her knees, she struggled to gather a few items scattered about, placing them in a small plastic bag. She struggles to get to her feet; her body trembling from the brutal attack. “How could you do this to me?!” she groaned in the direction of a woman standing near the corner of the room. As the injured young woman struggled to stand, she made her way towards the nervous woman. Anticipating what was about to happen, the woman shouted, “Don't you understand?!” “Don't you get it?!” “I did this for us!” “This is all for you!” As she nervously backed away, she raised the piece of paper she was clutching in her hand. The pain turned to rage as the battered woman took one mighty swing! Both women collapsed to the floor; one from the pain of a brutal rape, the other, from a right hook to the jaw. “Give me that!” she exclaimed, snatching the paper from the now semi-conscious woman's hand. After reading the contents, she ripped it up, and then tossed it in her face. “That is what this was all about?” sobbed the woman as she slid along the wall in an attempt to get back on her feet. “Don't you ever come near me again!” She cried as she wrapped a sweater around her waist, while making her way out of the front door. She welcomed the late afternoon shower from Mother Nature, as she staggered along the empty rural road. With no food, drink or money, she had no choice but to walk as best she could, while stopping to rest, from time to time. She wanted nothing more than to get as far away from that place as possible. Dizzy from the heat, loss of blood and pain of the attack, she hardly even noticed the truck as it slowed, approaching her from behind. “Excuse me miss, but could you use a ride?” inquired an elderly man in an even older, beat up and rusted pick-up truck, as he pulled up alongside of her. Frightened and a bit hesitant, she finally whispered, “thank you,” as she struggled to get in. The young woman had slowly walked for hours until her body had become numb. “This is no place for a lovely young lady, such as you, to be walking alone in the dark.” he concluded. “The dark?” she mumbled, as she paused to look about the sky. Disorientated, she had not realized the sun was setting. Huh, the sun was setting, but all she could remember was the comforting late afternoon rain; the shower that briefly, seemed to wash away the memory and the stink of her attackers, earlier on, in the day. After about a mile or so, the old man attempted to break the silence. “What's a pretty young thing like yourself doing out here all alone anyway?” However, there was no response. She just sat there with a blank look on her tired face. “Are you hungry?” “I have a couple sandwiches and some coffee in my lunch box there.” offered the old man. Again, he was met by the cold, blank stare of the injured woman. “Stop here,” she said abruptly, glaring out of the window. “Thank you for the ride, I'll just get out here.” “Ah, the old Brande Plantation; what a beautiful place it is now.” sighed the old man. “Yes, it is.” she thought, as she attempted to climb out of the truck. That is exactly why she wanted to stop. She needed a place like this to clear her mind. It seemed so peaceful. She was drawn to its serene energy; it gave her a warm feeling of safety. In her heart, she knew this was where she needed to be at that particular moment. She groaned in agonizing pain, clutching her abdominal area, as she hung onto the rusted out, door of the truck. “Miss, are you alright?” asked the old man concernedly. Again, not a word, but she did manage a half smile, as she closed the door. She fought back the pain, unaware that her sweater had

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the Hebrew Scriptures reveals the ethical situations in ancient Israel as a structural analysis, and exposes a covenantal triangle that features a dynamic of giving and receiving, taking and paying penalties, as a meme for human relationships. This can be applied to groups as well as individuals and is surprisingly applicable to life in the twenty-first century. Two senses of "Law"--natural scientific discoveries and the rules laid down by a divine creator--lead to frames for considering these covenantal relationships, and even the existence of "Sin." Are we bound to obey the rules laid down by God, or may we decide what is best for us?
