Book excerpt: "I worry that the patterns in life say I worry that they dictate, that, through the education that should free us, we will all fall in line. So our search for knowledge will eventually turn us all into people willing to be oppressed. We'll even feel good about it. We'll like being oppressed. We have taught this ignorance that is guiding us. We have to smash this." When an acquaintance tells 19 year old Langley Jackson this, Langley is naïve and new to the city of Long Beach. But as time climbs forward Langley learns that it's true: some things need to be smashed. Some things can't be solved, only learned from. And some people-including loved ones-you have to just let them die.

Book Statues

  • Author : Michel Serres
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2014-12-18
  • ISBN : 1472522060
  • Pages : 223 pages

Download or read book Statues written by Michel Serres and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first English translation of one of his most important works, Michel Serres presents the statue as more than a static entity: for Serres it is the basis for knowledge, society, the subject and object, the world and experience. Serres demonstrates how sacrificial art founded and still persists in society and reflects on the centrality of death and the statufied dead body to the human condition. Each section covers a different time period and statuary topic, ranging from four thousand years ago to 1986; from Baal, the paintings of Carpaccio, and the Eiffel Tower, to Rodin's The Gates of Hell, the Challenger disaster and the literature of Maupassant, La Fontaine and Jules Verne. Expository, lyrical, fictionalized and hallucinatory, Statues plays with time and place, history and story in order to provoke us into thinking in entirely new ways. Through mythic and poetic meditations on various kinds of descent into the underworld and new insights into the relation of the subject and object and their foundation in death, Statues contains great treasures and provocations for philosophers, literary critics, art historians and sociologists.

Download or read book London s Statues and Monuments written by Peter Matthews and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07-20 with total page 249 pages. Book excerpt: The streets and public spaces of London are rich with statues and monuments commemorating the city's great figures and events – from Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square and Sir Christopher Wren's Great Fire Monument to the charming Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens, the range is glorious. Some commemorate events, while others celebrate people real or fictional; some take the form of small reliefs, while others are huge bronzes on pedestals, larger than life-size. Executed in stone, bronze and a range of other materials, London's statues and monuments include work by some of the world's greatest sculptors, and this book is a fully illustrated guide to the pieces and their stories: sometimes surprising and occasionally controversial, but always fascinating.

Book Francesca Woodman and the Kantian Sublime

Download or read book Francesca Woodman and the Kantian Sublime written by Claire Raymond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her feminist inquiry into aesthetics and the sublime, Claire Raymond reinterprets the work of the American photographer Francesca Woodman (1958-1981). Placing Woodman in a lineage of women artists beginning with nineteenth-century photographers Julia Margaret Cameron and Clementina, Viscountess Hawarden, Raymond compels a reconsideration of Woodman's achievement in light of the gender dynamics of the sublime. Raymond argues that Woodman's photographs of decrepit architecture allegorically depict the dissolution of the frame, a dissolution Derrida links to theories of the sublime in Kant's Critique of Judgement. Woodman's self-portraits, Raymond contends, test the parameters of the gaze, a reading that departs from the many analyses of Woodman's work that emphasize her dramatic biography. Woodman is here revealed as a conceptually sophisticated artist whose deployment of allegory and allusion engages a broader debate about Enlightenment aesthetics, and the sublime.
