"Masterly…Quade has created a world bristling with compassion and humanity. The characters and the challenges they face are wholly realized and moving; their journeys span a wide spectrum of emotion and it is impossible not to root for [them]." —Alexandra Chang, New York Times Book Review It’s Holy Week in the small town of Las Penas, New Mexico, and thirty-three-year-old unemployed Amadeo Padilla has been given the part of Jesus in the Good Friday procession. He is preparing feverishly for this role when his fifteen-year-old daughter Angel shows up pregnant on his doorstep and disrupts his plans for personal redemption. With weeks to go until her due date, tough, ebullient Angel has fled her mother’s house, setting her life on a startling new path. Vivid, tender, funny, and beautifully rendered, The Five Wounds spans the baby’s first year as five generations of the Padilla family converge: Amadeo’s mother, Yolanda, reeling from a recent discovery; Angel’s mother, Marissa, whom Angel isn’t speaking to; and disapproving Tíve, Yolanda’s uncle and keeper of the family’s history. Each brings expectations that Amadeo, who often solves his problems with a beer in his hand, doesn’t think he can live up to. The Five Wounds is a miraculous debut novel from a writer whose stories have been hailed as “legitimate masterpieces” (New York Times). Kirstin Valdez Quade conjures characters that will linger long after the final page, bringing to life their struggles to parent children they may not be equipped to save.

Book The Five Wounds of Jesus

Download or read book The Five Wounds of Jesus written by David Williams and published by Gracewing Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Devotion to the Five Wounds of Jesus has long been one of the most popular forms of Catholic spirituality. David Williams traces the roots of this devotion in Holy Scripture: the words of the prophets foretell the suffering Christ, while the New Testament witnesses to the victorious scars borne by the risen Lord. The Sacred Wounds of Jesus remained a persistent theme in the writings of the Desert Fathers and Doctors of the Church, a theme that was to be more fully developed in the devotional practice of the mediaeval period and on into modern times. Detailing the several forms devotion to the Five Wounds has taken (both mediaeval and modern) - in art, liturgy and poetry - David Williams recalls those holy people favoured by visons of the suffering Lord, as well as those who themselves came to bear the stigmata of Christ. He outlines the history of devotion to the specific wound in the Side - later seen as the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and describes the 'gift of tears' given to some from their reflection upon the Passion of their Master. David Williams is the author of The Cistercians on the Early Middle Ages and The Welsh Cistercians, both published by Gracewing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people get hurt and suffer painful memories as a result of living in an imperfect world. Through the example of Jesus, who heals from the inside out, readers will learn how to experience this wholeness and assist in the healing of others. Let Jesus Heal Your Hidden Wounds speaks to the individual who wants to be or already is involved in healing ministry. This is not another technique for doing healing, but a description of how the prayer minister cooperates with the Holy Spirit to bring healing and deliverance to people with hidden wounds. Each chapter includes several questions for use in a Bible study setting or to provoke further personal reflection. Those called to healing ministries will be taken to a new level of understanding and greater effectiveness from reading and studying this book. Book A Doctor at Calvary The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ as Described by a Surgeon

Download or read book A Doctor at Calvary The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ as Described by a Surgeon written by Pierre Barbet and published by Rare Treasure Editions. This book was released on 2024-03-30T00:00:00Z with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What the Gospels don't reveal about Christ's suffering, science does. The Gospels reveal only the barest essentials about the physical sufferings of Our Lord. But in this mind-opening book, Dr. Pierre Barbet relies heavily on his close analysis of the Holy Shroud of Turin to recreate every stage of the Passion with heart-rending precision and detail. The result: a minor classic of spirituality by a modern layman. Dr. Barbet was a devout believer who knew the spiritual value of his findings - and he encouraged priests and pastors to use them: "It is largely with a view to these clerics that I have wished to divulge my ideas, so that they may nourish their devotion to Jesus crucified and may bring it out in their preaching." This classic, with its engrossing and sympathetic medical portrayal of the Passion, has ignited religious devotion in clerics and laymen for over half a century.

Book The Vulnerary of Christ

    Book Details:
  • Author : Louis Charbonneau-Lassay
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2020-12-15
  • ISBN : 9781621386773

Download or read book The Vulnerary of Christ written by Louis Charbonneau-Lassay and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vulnerary of Christ, finally published for the first time more than 70 years after its author's death, contains exceptional findings by French Catholic archaeologist and symbologist Louis Charbonneau-Lassay (1871-1946) on the five wounds of Christ: their symbolism, representations, and meaning in Christian art. Born in Loudun (France), Lassay developed an early interest in the Christian faith. From 1903 to 1925, he published articles on prehistory, Celtic and Gallo-Roman archaeology, numismatics, heraldry, and folklore, which he illustrated with his own engravings. When contributing to the Catholic periodical Regnabit, he refocused his research on wide-ranging aspects of the Sacred Heart, with the purpose of showing its universal dimension. In 1925 compiled from his notes on Christian animal symbolism the book The Bestiary of Christ, published in 1941 and now a primary reference in Christian symbology. He completed the present The Vulnerary of Christ shortly before his death in December 1946, but it has only recently been published-wherein lies a fascinating tale, told in this first English edition. Put briefly: In 2013, Gauthier Pierozak, while transcribing Lassay's correspondence, found clearly explained the story of The Vulnerary of Christ and the many articles it was to have contained. Experts in the field led Gauthier to the vast archive the author had assembled over his lifetime. In December 2016, exactly 70 years after the author's death, Gauthier was able to take possession of the entire archive, and so, with access to all the articles Lassay had compiled in the lost manuscript of The Vulnerary of Christ, reconstituted the first French edition of this extraordinary book, which was published in 2017. Angelico Press then worked with a translator personally familiar with Lassay's writings, who undertook the monumental task of preparing this extraordinary 586-page text of 33 extensive articles and nearly 600 illustrations for publication in English. Angelico Press hopes to publish further compilations of Lassay's archived articles, including an unexpurgated edition of The Bestiary of Christ and two further volumes on the Christian symbolism of plants and of minerals, entitled respectively The Florary of Christ and The Lapidary of Christ.
