Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fish River Bush South Africa and Its Wild Animals The following articles on the Fish River Bush of the Cape Colony are taken from the "Edinburgh New Philosophical Journal" of July and October 1853, and Vol. 54, No. 107, to which they were contributed, when the Author was stationed there during the Caffre Wars, from personal observation on patrol with the troops. Considerable alteration will no doubt have taken place in the condition of nature since then, owing to colonisation and cultivation of the primeval wilderness then existing. Farming and agriculture will have invaded the valleys and their flats, and established dwellings and tillage. The wild animals, as Elephants and Hippopotami, Tigers and Hyaenas, Koodoos and Bush Buck, will have disappeared by now, but most of the Birds may still remain denizens of the woods. The sketches were taken at the time, 1848 and 1852, on the spot, and represent the aspect of nature as then existing, but probably not at the present time. References are inserted to plates in Capt. Harris' "Wild Animals," 1840, and "Wild Sports," 1852, in Southern Africa, with illustrations of the above notes.
