Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Part of the Institutes of the Laws of England, or a Commentary Upon Littleton, Vol. 1 of 2: Not the Name of the Author Only, but of the Law Itself This to be sure is the most favourable point of view for the editor its tendency being to show, that his excess of zeal to render the edition valuable has been one cause of his finally leaving it imperfect. If it shall be thought preper by others kindly to receive the editor's apology in this form, it will qualify his un happiness at the painful and trying moment of separation from a very favourite work before its advancement into maturity. Should a less indulgent construction be applied to the editor, it will deeply wound feelings already enough exercised; but from a consciousness of being open to some degree of exception for what rigid observers may style an indefensible abandonment of a work so long promised to be completed, he must in that case kiss the rod, and submit himself to the severity of animadversion with a patient humility.
