Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some consider American agriculture as one of the wonders of the modern world. In this book Walter Ebeling tells its story. Professor Ebeling grew up on a farm, loves the soil, and had the good fortune to have been closely associated with the land in all its aspects. Beginning with a brief history of why and how preagricultural peoples changed from hunters and gatherers and eventually became tillers of the soil, Professor Ebeling then deals with the seven geographic regions of the United States--from the East to California--giving the history and present status of agriculture for each reason. Although the main thrust of The Fruited Plain is the drama, romance, and excitement of the American agricultural experience, Professor Ebeling is concerned with the environmental, ecological, and sociological aspects of agriculture and its supporting industries. He discusses environmental problems in America that began when the Indians' "shifting" agriculture (allowing for long periods of soil restoration) was replaced by the white man's permanent agriculture. He examines the modern technology for a successful and environmentally viable permanent agriculture and how it can be implemente on a much larger scale. The questions asked--and answered--are what are the principal environmental problems? What is being, and/or can be done about soil erosion? Scarcity of water? Urban encroachment on agricultural lands? What directions can be taken by benevolent technology? Does technology have remedies for land that is susceptible to water erosion and loss of topsoil? Likewise, pollution and environmental degradation resulting from excessive use of pesticides? Our society much recognize the importance of protecting our agricultural resources, and Professor Ebeling, in this monumental book, gives many suggestions on how to accomplish the sustained utilization of America's great resource--the farmlands. Book Let There Be Towns

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gilbert R. Cruz
  • Publisher : Texas A&M University Press
  • Release : 1988
  • ISBN : 9780890966778
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book Let There Be Towns written by Gilbert R. Cruz and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three pillars supported the empire of New Spain. The first two, the presidio and the mission, have lived on in history and the popular imagination. The third, less studied and less understood, has lived on in the traditions of local self-governance and the distinctive cultural and social patterns of the Southwest. That third pillar is the civil settlement, or town, with its distinctive governmental institutions. Town councils, or cabildos, brought to the northern frontier a high degree of law and order, patterns of local government, a rough democracy, and the principle of justice based on rule of law. The towns populated the Borderlands, introduced industry, and contributed to the economy and defense of Hispanic territories. Let There Be Towns presents the origins and contributions of six of the early settlements of New Spain--San Antonio and Laredo in Spanish Texas, Santa Fe and El Paso in Nuevo Mexico, and San Jose and Los Angeles in Alta California. In Let There Be Towns, Gilbert R. Cruz carefully assesses their importance as part of the Spanish government's policy for implanting in North America the linguistic, social, religious, and political values of the crown. Ten years of archival study, as well as travel through Spain and Mexico researching the origins of colonial towns in parent institutions, have led the author to the provocative conclusion that town settlements and their civil governments were even more important than the more glamorous missions and presidios in establishing Spanish dominion over the northern Borderlands.

Book Entrepreneurship and Religion

Download or read book Entrepreneurship and Religion written by Léo-Paul Dana and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I wish this book had been around when I tried to teach about entrepreneurship in its social context; life would have been much easier with these informed sources.' – Alistair R. Anderson, Aberdeen Business School, UK This rich and detailed book makes a very timely contribution to extending our understanding of entrepreneurship in its social context. Using selected examples, the respected contributors show how the values developed in religious beliefs and practices shape entrepreneurship. For too long the entrepreneur has been characterized as an isolated, economically driven individual, thus ignoring how enterprise and entrepreneurs are products of their society, their culture and their religion. This innovative book discusses both entrepreneurship and religion, as well as indicating how the synthesis of beliefs and practices combine in entrepreneurial endeavours. It provides a conceptually useful way of framing the individualistic entrepreneur in his or her social and cultural context, demonstrating how entrepreneurial agency operates within and through a variety of religious contexts. Illustrated with original photographs, this captivating book will be warmly welcomed by students and researchers with interests in entrepreneurship, sociology, religion and cultural studies. Government policy-makers in immigration will also find this book an invaluable read.
