Book excerpt: A riveting, behind-the-bars look at one of America's most feared prisons: San Quentin-- by a minister to the lost souls sitting on death row. Himself a former criminal, Smith shares the most important lessons he's learned from years of helping inmates discover God's plan for them. Their stories show us that it is still possible to find God's grace and mercy from behind bars, and that it's never too late to turn our lives around.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1961, writing Chronicles of San Quentin was first suggested to Kenneth Lamott during a spell as a teacher at that California prison in the 1950’s. The book not only chronicles the history and highlights of one of America’s most famous penitentiaries, but it also reflects the changes in prisons in the U.S. over the last 100 years. Calmly informing us that there were over 4,000 murders in California between 1849-1855, Lamott quickly justifies the terrible need the state had for prisons other than lax, badly run county and city jails. But San Quentin itself, which started as a floating prison hulk, was little better. Here are its famous prisoners, riots and escapes, its floggings and brutalities, its executions too. With the coming of the “New Era” penology in the 1890’s, the change to more humane and rational treatment of prisoners is shown. The Clinton Duffy era is dealt with at great length—its shortcomings are shown along with its humane virtues—and prison life including the Chessman execution, is portrayed with sympathy and understanding. A highly readable book.

Book One Barrel At A Time

Download or read book One Barrel At A Time written by Jack Carmichael and published by Author House. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 2005, two days after my 76th birthday, I became the Protestant Chaplain at California Correctional Center in Susanville, California. The warden hired me for the job of creating a Faith Based Rehabilitation Program, taught by inmates, supported by unpaid Outside Volunteers. It was anticipated that it could be a rehabilitation program for the twenty six State Prisons in California as well a challenge for the myriad jails and prisons throughout the United States. To overcome the warehousing model of incarcerating and housing inmate in prisons throughout most prison systems it is imperative that inexpensive programs be developed to counteract the chilling effect of sparse and ineffective free time support for the inmate population. California recidivism rates in state prisons exceed 80%. It is expected that is much the same across the United States. Something needs to be done to counteract this and the CCC model is one attempt to do it. Included in this book are anecdotal examples and testimonies which point to this possibility. The challenges or "barrels" related in this attempt to change the recidivism rate at one institution tell us it won't be easy. New ideas are hard to come by in prison, "the old and tried and failed" to often have the upper hand. As you follow my story you will see how and who are the advocates and foes of change in the way prisons are operated. The story told here can benefit the families of the more than 1,000,000 inmates in the prisons and jails in America. It can provide insights into the prison life for the students in the Correctional Curriculums in the colleges and universities of America. If the book were read by the personnel in the Administration of State Prisons they might be challenged to work to change the climate in their jails and prisons. Whether any of the above read it isn't as important as if you read it. Read it!!
