Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Book of French Composition: Materials for Translating English Into French This work is designed for beginners, and may be put into the hands of any person knowing the elementary roles concerning substantives, articles, and adjectives, and the conjugation of regular verbs. My object has not been to write a course of grammar, but to make the pupils familiar with the most important rules of daily occurrence in translating English into French. In teaching I have been struck by the difficulty most pupils experience in the simplest translations of this kind. Many who have studied grammar some time, and who easily understand French at sight, are unable to translate English into French without making a great number of mistakes. From this, it has seemed to me that it would be useful to familiarise pupils as early as possible with the most common difficulties of translation. To accomplish this, I have collected some pieces of English prose, and have arranged them as examples to the rules. At the end of these pieces, I have put others bearing on the whole of the rules, and serving as a recapitulation. The book is divided into two parts: Part I. - Pieces for Translation, with rules. Part II. Pieces for Translation, without rules. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book First French Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book First French Composition Classic Reprint written by Philip Schuyler Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First French Composition The story of First French Composition can be told in a few words. We could not find for the teaching of elementary French composition a book that contained enough very simple material. So we made one. One reason, we think, that formal written-work has not been taught earlier, for a longer period, and better in our high schools, is that teachers have realized the book for their purpose did not exist. These words should not be construed to mean that there are not several excellent composition manuals in the field we say merely that in our opinion they do not offer a goodly amount of extremely simple, natural, and concrete material. We shall not be content unless First French Composition is found to be a most practical book for use during the second year of French in secondary schools, even in those which have only a two years' course. It is not graded in the sense that it begins with easy words and phrases and ends with long puzzle-sentences which illustrate every conceivable manner of syntactic difficulty. First French Composition is easy at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end. It aims to give the student constant opportunity to write, and write, and write the sort of simple idiomatic French sentence thathe must know before he can work out long problems in philosophical diction. It is practice that makes perfect, and to practise a thing means; to do it over and over again and then yet again.
