Book The Fireplace in the Home Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fireplace in the Home Classic Reprint written by Margaret Greenleaf and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fireplace in the Home It is a fact generally conceded by the architect, the decorator, and the intelligent layman, that there is no architectural feature of a room of more superlative importance to its finished effect than the mantel. Where the right mantel is in its correct setting, the artistic values and livable qualities of the room in which it stands are more than doubled; also the reverse is true in the same ratio where the mantel is out of harmony with, and unsuited to, its surroundings - therefore, it behooves the home maker to consider long and carefully the designs submitted for his hall, his living-room, his dining-room, and the bed-chambers of his house. In buying and placing a piece of furniture one has always the opportunity to remove it if it proves unsuited to its surround ings, and unattractive in itself, but in the mantel once placed one has a per manent and most conspicuous feature for the room, which must be retained and enjoyed - or endured. Fortunate ly, it is generally possible to-day to see in the showrooms of the dealer the actual mantel ready to set in place. This is a great help to those who, from drawings alone, are unable to see in the mind's eye the complete effect, for in houses architecturally correct, the mantel is essentially a veryimportant part of the trim and furnish ings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Making a Fireplace Has been associated with the race as far back almost as the home itself. At first, Of course, it was as a necessity and the development from that to a luxury has been an exceedingly Slow one extending over the years down to the present time. There are two forms of the Open fire a possible third one, the gas log, being a subject on which the less said the better. We have, therefore, a choice between the Open fireplace designed for wood and the basket grate in which to burn coal, pref erably cannel coal. This latter fuel is not nearly SO well known in this country as in England where the scarcity of wood necessarily makes coal the more com monly used fuel. With our own abun dance Of wood, however, there will per haps be little hesitancy in Choosing the open fireplace rather than the basket. Book The Open Fireplace

Download or read book The Open Fireplace written by J. Pickering Putnam and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Open Fireplace: In All Ages No part of the interior of a building offers so broad a field for the exercise of the taste and skill of the designer as the Open Fireplace and chimney-piece. The friendly warmth of the fire renders it the immediate centre of attraction. Its ever varying, cheerful flame enchains our attention as a living and sympathetic companion, long after the surrounding inanimate objects have ceased to occupy our thoughts. Hence the chimney-piece has, for ages, been honored and treated as the focus of interest; the key-note of the interior decoration of the apartment; and, so long as our physical natures remain the same, it is likely to continue to be so treated. No one object has assumed a greater and more interesting variety of forms at difi'erent hands, and none shows to better advantage the peculiar character and individuality of the designer. By adding to our collection already formed in the first edition, a number of the best modern designs executed or prepared for execution in this country, we have obtained an interesting index of the gradual and comparative development of interior decoration and household art, both medieval and modern, at home and abroad. Steers, Esq., who was deeply interested in this subject of fireplaces and who brought to my notice a book of essays by Count of Rumford. And among them one on fireplace construction and alter ation. My main object in publishing this little book is to reproduce this essay in the hope that it will be inwardly digested bv the architect, the layman, and the builder, and that it will at least in a measure help to im prove the condition of a very important and much neglected feature of our homes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Comforts of Home And more had gone over its chimney, down which, as we were to discover later, a hundred flies and more would come when the open fires had warmed it, - and within doors it would have charmed any amateur Of the Colonial by the antiquity Of its furnishings. Temporarily it belonged to me, my executors, administrators, and assigns. But there were limits to our possession. None of us might 'permit any hole to be drilled or made in the stone or brick work Of said building'; no 'sign or pla card' might we place upon it; we might not 'over-load damage, or deface' it; nor might we carry on any unlawful. Book The English Fireplace

Download or read book The English Fireplace written by L. A. Shuffrey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Fireplace: A History of the Development of the Chimney, Chimney-Piece and Firegrate With Their Accessories, From the Earliest Times to the Beginning of the Xixth Century Ome years ago my friend Mr. W. Galsworthy Davie, Whose photographs of architectural work are known to many, turned his attention to photographing the fine examples of old chimney-pieces which he met with in his various photographic tours, and asked me to co-operate with him in the production of a book on the subject of the Fireplace and its accessories. I accepted the task light-heartedly, thinking that some thirty years' associa tion with grates and chimney-pieces would have made it an easy one for me, but in this I was mistaken, as I soon found that the subject required much personal research and a further study of old examples, as well as the making of numerous sketches and mea sured drawings for the elucidation of its history. It became necessary also to get Mr. Davie to photograph many important examples in historic houses, and so, by filling in the gaps, produce a representative collection. All the other denizens had heaters; or choked-up, shivering, contracted grates; or a half-stran gled flue from the basement below. Poor Pitkin relied on a rubber tube fastened to his gas light, which was connected with a sort of Chinese tea-caddy of a stove propped up on four legs, and which was shifted about so as to thaw out the coldest spots in his studio.
