Book The Fighting Shepherdess Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fighting Shepherdess Classic Reprint written by Caroline Lockhart and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fighting Shepherdess A heavily laden freight wagon, piled high with ranch supplies, stood in the dooryard before along loghouse. The yard was fenced with crooked cottonwood poles so that it served also as a corral, around which the leaders of the freight team wandered, stripped of their harness, looking for a place to roll. A woman stood on tip-toe gritting her teeth in exasperation as she tugged at the check-rein on the big wheelhorse, which stuck obstinately in the ring. When she loosened it finally, she stooped and looked under the horse's neck at the girl of fourteen or thereabouts, who was unharnessing the horse on the other side. "Good God, Kate," exclaimed the woman irritably; "how many times must I tell you to unhook the traces before you do up the lines? One of these days you'll have the damnedest runaway in seven states." The girl, whose thoughts obviously were not on what she was doing, obeyed immediately, and without replying looped up the heavy traces, throwing and tying the lines over the hames with experienced hands. The resemblance between mother and daughter was so slight that it might be said not to exist at all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sheepfold: The Story of a Shepherdess and Her Sheep and How She Lost Them Human life is but a road, and when its story comes to be written, may be shown in two ways: either as encountered by the pedestrian one piece at a time, without foresight of what lies beyond, or from a more elevated and bird's-eye point of view, embracing the two extremes, and telling even at the beginning something of what waits at the end. In some lives death plays so small and unimportant a part that no dramatic purpose is served by holding its record till after; and as to Jane Sterling's end, readers who shall care at all about her life need not be kept in doubt. Her history is a past history, and she no longer breathes the air of this visible world wherein once she took delight. It is enough here to say that she died as she lived, happy, conscious of no enmity either in fate or in her fellow-men, and not finding in solitude that proof of failure which, for one who had been a leader of men, some might suppose it to be. In her passage through life, which contained for her so many pedestrian miles, Jane found special contentment in certain things, simple yet of mysterious attraction: winding roads with broad margins of green, fields of corn, thatched house-roofs with the chitter of nestlings under their eaves, and the clink of the blacksmith's hammer at the forge. To such things she had been born, and they remained with her at her death. These loves had their main association in two separate localities, one in the east of England, the other in the west, belonging respectively to her childhood and her approach into age; for though nomadic during the more active and proselytizing period of her life, at its two ends she was sedentary - settled, that is to say, in fixed and narrow surroundings. Book The Shepherd of Hermas Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Shepherd of Hermas Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by C. Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shepherd of Hermas, Vol. 1 Not long afterwards the claim of the book to such rank was disallowed in the Muratorian Canon, a lost Greek list of canonical writings of which a fragment in Latin was discovered in the Ambrosian Library at Milan by Muratori. In this fragment it is said that the Shepherd was written in Rome quite recently in our times, and that its author was Hermas, a brother of Pius who was then Bishop of Rome. He would accordingly have written in or before the sixth decade of the second century a.d. In the next generation the book was widely cir culated and highly esteemed as a work of inspiration and authority, but some doubted. It was known in Africa to Tertullian, who condemned it in one of his treatises; and in Alexandria to Clement and Origen, who regarded it as inspired. Book John Joseph Mathews

Download or read book John Joseph Mathews written by Michael Snyder and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Joseph Mathews (1894–1979) is one of Oklahoma’s most revered twentieth-century authors. An Osage Indian, he was also one of the first Indigenous authors to gain national renown. Yet fame did not come easily to Mathews, and his personality was full of contradictions. In this captivating biography, Michael Snyder provides the first book-length account of this fascinating figure. Known as “Jo” to all his friends, Mathews had a multifaceted identity. A novelist, naturalist, biographer, historian, and tribal preservationist, he was a true “man of letters.” Snyder draws on a wealth of sources, many of them previously untapped, to narrate Mathews’s story. Much of the writer’s family life—especially his two marriages and his relationships with his two children and two stepchildren—is explored here for the first time. Born in the town of Pawhuska in Indian Territory, Mathews attended the University of Oklahoma before venturing abroad and earning a second degree from Oxford. He served as a flight instructor during World War I, traveled across Europe and northern Africa, and bought and sold land in California. A proud Osage who devoted himself to preserving Osage culture, Mathews also served as tribal councilman and cultural historian for the Osage Nation. Like many gifted artists, Mathews was not without flaws. And perhaps in the eyes of some critics, he occupies a nebulous space in literary history. Through insightful analysis of his major works, especially his semiautobiographical novel Sundown and his meditative Talking to the Moon, Snyder revises this impression. The story he tells, of one remarkable individual, is also the story of the Osage Nation, the state of Oklahoma, and Native America in the twentieth century.
