Book excerpt: Former juror Jess Dawson is facing a difficult time in her life, raising an autistic son and navigating a failing marriage, when her past service as a juror on a high-profile death penalty case comes back to haunt her. Mikael Kriskan, the young Russian the jury sentenced to death for killing his adoptive American parents one cold Colorado night, is nearing his execution date when the foreman of the jury is found dead, and all aspects of his death parallel the original case. Then, a second juror appears to commit suicide and leaves a disturbing note attached to his chest. "KJ - do the right thing." Only Jess knows the true meaning of the message, and soon finds herself squeezed between the demands of the original prosecutor on the case - now her lover - who's intent on executing Kriskan, and members of the Russian mob, who are hell bent to force Jess to confess to her past transgressions and return the genius Kriskan to his Russian roots. The choice the mob gives her seems easy. Kill Mikael, kill her son. Save Mikael, save her son. But in a world of politics and presumed guilt or innocence, this choice will be anything but easy.

Book excerpt: A semi-secret society of ten women out for justice. A young recruit who will have to expose the truth...or die trying to escape their wrath. "A Taut, twisting tale of justice and revenge" - Bob Mayer Former victim Palmer Reed is facing the 20th anniversary of her kidnapping when she is recruited to the board of a prestigious foundation dedicated to helping the victims of crime. Run by Marjoram Swall, a woman known as The Vindicator, who helped rescue Palmer twenty years ago from the hands of their mutual enemy, the foundation grants Palmer something to believe in, hoping that by helping other victims, she will resolve her own painful past. But something dark lies beneath the foundation's surface, and after Palmer learns of their use of blackmail to raise money for their cause, she discovers that several of those who escaped their blackmail attempts and went unpunished for their crimes all later died in mysterious accidents. Accidents, she believes, are anything but accidental. Faced with the dilemma of staying loyal to her mentor and the foundation that's provided her with a purpose, or exposing the truth and tearing her life apart, she's forced to question her own ethical boundaries, whether the pursuit of justice and the equalization of a faulty legal system is worth murder. But her mentor won't risk giving her that choice, and soon Palmer finds herself the target of an unknown killer, her former kidnappers, and even Marjoram herself. For Palmer has opened a deadly link to their past, and she's on a mission to uncover the truth. A page-turning suspense thriller that is part of the Women of Redemption Series, books that feature women who may not be perfect, but perfectly kick-ass when given a second chance. Interview with the Author Q - So, what makes the Women of Redemption books special? A - I think it really boils down to the characters. When I write, I let the characters tell me who they are, and what I discover is that like any of us, they wrestle with the challenges life throws at them in a varied manner. The emotions they experience are real - anger, betrayal, hurt, grief, guilt - and the choices they make as a result - whether revenge, vengeance, or just turning a blind eye - may not be good or right, but they're human. The question facing each in the end, is what will they do to make the wrong right? Q - You like to throw your strong female protagonists into some impossible situations. Why is that? A - I've always liked books about ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances. I believe people often find the best in themselves when faced with the worst. I want readers to put themselves in these women's shoes, and think... How far would I go to get justice if I was kidnapped and the perpetrators responsible were never punished? What would I do if I found out the woman I most respected was taking justice into her own hands? What if I discovered the man I found guilty of murder was innocent and I was the one responsible for securing his death sentence? Q - These books seem to cross genre boundaries, a bit mystery, suspense, and thriller. A - I think all authors like to create books that mirror the kind of books they like to read. My top picks are usually serial killer thrillers, psychological thrillers, private detectives, and any number of thriller and mystery best sellers. I love a fast-paced style that keeps me on the edge of my seat. As a result, I think my books tend to take a part from each genre - a bit "whodunit", some "don't open that door", add a few high stakes and blend them together. Q - So, why should a reader check out your books? A - Because you'll love the page-turning action! And thanks for reading!

Book excerpt: The death of Michael Brown, Jr., in Ferguson, Missouri, on August 9, 2014, has become a touchstone for reform in three areas of American society: the high incidence of black citizens killed by white policemen; the pattern and effect of systemic racism in the countrys criminal justice system; the need for study and reform of current federal and state grand jury systems. The Thirteenth Juror illustrates the pitfalls of the grand jury system by inviting readers to take a seat with the 12 people selected as grand jurors in the Michael Brown case, and to share the evidence and process they went through. Details that were not openly or adequately questioned are highlighted, and the impact of the posture and attitude of the prosecuting attorneys is explored. Disparities are uncovered in the narrative of Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson, who was responsible for Browns death, and the process of informing or misinforming jury members regarding the law(s) governing their deliberations is given critical attention. Ultimately, throughout the 24 days of testimony, the deeply human side of this tragedy is shared. And measured against the history of the grand jury process itself, this is a case study illustrating the need for examination and reform.

To the surprise and dismay of many, ownership was assumed by a 23 year-old college dropout, named Willie Traynor. The future of the paper looked grim until a young mother was brutally raped and murdered by a member of the notorious Padgitt family. Book The Jury and the Defense of Insanity

Download or read book The Jury and the Defense of Insanity written by Rita James Simon and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty years after it was first published, the issues raised in The Jury and the Defense of Insanity remain pertinent. Rita James Simon examines how motivated and competent juries are, how well jurors understand and follow judges' instructions, their understand-ing of expert testimony, and the extent to which their own backgrounds and experiences influence their decisions. Simon provides a rare opportunity to observe how jurors go about the process of deliberating and reaching a verdict by following them into the jury room and recording their deliberations. This pathbreaking study of jury room behavior provides compelling evidence of the effectiveness of our trial by jury system. The Jury and the Defense of Insanity was the product of an experimental study con-ducted as part of the University of Chicago Jury Project. Over 1,000 jurors were chosen to participate, not as volunteers, but as part of their regular jury duty, in two experimental trials, one on a charge of housebreaking, the other of incest. In each the insanity de-fense was raised. Court judges instructed the jurors to consider the recorded trials they were about to hear with all the care and seriousness they would give to a real criminal prosecution, and the taped recordings of their deliberations make it clear that they did just that. These recordings, along with responses to detailed questionnaires, yielded significant data, equally applicable to civil as to criminal cases. We learn their reactions to their fellow jurors; personal evaluations of the quality and effectiveness of delibera-tions; the degree to which religion, sex, social status, education, and like factors affect participation in and influence on the course of the deliberation; and the recounting of and reliance upon personal experience in seeking to reach a verdict, among other in-sights furnished by this study. This is an exact record--not a description or recollected account--of the struggle of a jury to weigh evidence and achieve a just verdict. For lawyers whose job it is to win civil and criminal cases, for behavioral scientists who study male and female reactions in their cultural environment to the circumstances that confront them, and to all who are interested in how people behave and why, in a dramatic, socially significant situation, this is a fascinating and revealing book.
