Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fetish Folk of West Africa In this book as in the one that preceded it, The Jungle Folk of Africa, the author endeavours to exhibit the humanity of the African as it impressed himself. The difference between the two books is chiefly a difference of emphasis, and is indicated in the titles. In the former the African is described in relation to his surroundings - his exterior world. Much is said about the forest - deep, solemn, vast, impenetrably mysterious - wherein he roams at large with natures own wild freedom; contending also with its mighty forces, and wresting from it the means of existence by his own resourcefulness of expedient. In the present volume the author essays the more difficult task of revealing the interior world of the African - his mental habits and beliefs. Much is said about fetishism and folk-lore. If, despite all that is said herein, the philosophy of fetishism should remain obscure - and there is no doubt of it; if the reader should close this book with the consciousness of a broad, comprehensive ignorance of the subject, it may be to some extent the fault of fetishism itself, which is the jungle of jungles, an aggregation of incoherent beliefs. The world of the African is as wild and strange as the weird world that we often visit on the brink of sleep. Book excerpt: Since the early-modern encounter between African and European merchants on the Guinea Coast, European social critics have invoked African gods as metaphors for misplaced value and agency, using the term “fetishism” chiefly to assert the irrationality of their fellow Europeans. Yet, as J. Lorand Matory demonstrates in The Fetish Revisited, Afro-Atlantic gods have a materially embodied social logic of their own, which is no less rational than the social theories of Marx and Freud. Drawing on thirty-six years of fieldwork in Africa, Europe, and the Americas, Matory casts an Afro-Atlantic eye on European theory to show how Marx’s and Freud’s conceptions of the fetish both illuminate and misrepresent Africa’s human-made gods. Through this analysis, the priests, practices, and spirited things of four major Afro-Atlantic religions simultaneously call attention to the culture-specific, materially conditioned, physically embodied, and indeed fetishistic nature of Marx’s and Freud’s theories themselves. The earth was originally farmland created for a family. Animals that inhabited the air; water and earth were venerated by all cultures in the ancient world and viewed as symbols of the invisible forces; through whom he worships the Divine Power for the creative impulses of the gods readily respond to them. All cultures of the world reverent some animals as symbolism of divinity. The the forms and habits of these emblematic creatures : the media of existence closely relate them to the various generative and germinative powers of Nature thus, were viewed as evidence of Omnipresence. The Kono understood that all life has its origin in water. Therefore, he chose the fish as the symbol of the life germ. This fish as his emblem of the life germ is called Sa-neh (eel); meaning Sa, the ancient God is here. Furthermore, he went a step further and chose other kinds of animals to represent the divine for each - original founding fathers of the Kono Tribe. These animals and plants became known :Tana of the male heads of each founding family . However, the basic reasons behind such choices were based on a simple belief that each Damby head was a product of his Damby : his Tana or Totemic Animal. Therefore, the totemic animals were depicted as deities; and each family was prohibited from eating his or her totemic animal or food. At first, twelve animals and other forms of food were chosen and each family member had its own animal or other food form as the family's Tana. The animals and their explanations are giving in the book.

Book excerpt: Introduction The term "fetish" has evolved from an idiom used to describe a type of objects created in the interaction between European travelers and Africans in the early modern period to an analytical term that played a central role in the perception and study of non-Western art in general and African Art in particular. William Pietz, who conducted an extensive ethno-historical study of the fetish, argues that the term originated in the Coast of West Africa during the sixteenth and seventeenth Centuries. Pietz distinguishes between, on the one hand, actual African objects that may be called fetishes in Europe, together with the indigenous theories of them, and on the other hand, "fetish," an idea, and an idea of a kind of object, to which the term above applies. According to Pietz, the post-colonial concept of "fetish" emerged from the encounter between Europeans, a feudalistic society with a Catholic theological tradition, and Africans in a very specific historical context and in response to African material culture and customs. He begins his polemic with an introduction to the complex history of the word: "The fetish [originated] in conjunction with the emergent articulation of the ideology of the commodity form that defined itself within and against the social values and religious ideologies of two radically different types of non-Capitalist Society, as they encountered each other in an ongoing cross-cultural situation. This process is indicated in the history of the word itself as it developed from the late medieval Portuguese feitico, to the sixteenth Century pidgin Fetisso on the African Coast, to various northern European versions of the word via the 1602 text of the Dutchman Pieter de Marees... The fetish, then, not only originated from, but remains specific to, the problematic of the social value of material objects as revealed in situations formed by the encounter of radically heterogeneous social systems, and a study of the history of the idea of the fetish may be guided by identifying those themes that persist throughout the various discourses and disciplines that have appropriated the term." Stallybrass concludes that "Pietz shows that the fetish as a concept was elaborated to demonize the supposedly arbitrary attachment of West Africans to material objects. The European subject was constituted in opposition to a demonized fetishism, through the disavowal of the object." Also, getting an extreme sexual feeling from a woman's feet or the enjoyment from any object is a fetish. (*)
