This book was released on 1934 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most historians have given only incidental attention to the railway land subsidy policy of the Dominion of Canada. In breaking comparatively new ground Mr. Hedges has therefore depended to a large extent upon manuscript sources in the archives of the Department of the Interior at Ottawa. He traces the various steps leading to the adoption of the Canadian policy and discusses in detail its development in connection with the administration of the subsidy to the Canadian Pacific. In his final chapter he sets forth the broad outlines of the methods the railways pursued in the administration and disposition of their lands.

Book excerpt: First published in 1957, this study traces the development of the national policy as it affected the growth of the Canadian trade and discusses the grain marketing problems of Western Canada in the decades that followed, with detailed attention to legislation and moves by various growers' groups in an attempt to meet these problems. In Part One the author traces the development of the national policy and its impact on the growth of the wheat empire in the years before 1900. In Part Two, he discusses the grain marketing problems of western Canada during the 1900-1920 period. Download or read book Clifford Sifton Volume 2 written by D.J. Hall and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Lonely Eminence is the second of two volumes tracing the public life and times of Clifford Sifton, one of Canada's most controversial politicians. Volume II examines Sifton's life and work in the twentieth century, especially his political activities. Sifton's involvement in the early administration of the Yukon Territory is analyzed, as is his concern for a rational, all-Canadian transportation policy and his role in railway development in the west. Volume II of Clifford Sifton, like Volume I, is rich in historical detail and is the result of extensive research into original historical sources. The vitality and significance of Sifton's public and political career emerge from this political biography, which will be of interest to Canadian historians and political scientists, as well as to anyone interested in the growth and development of Canada.
Download or read book Railroaded The Transcontinentals and the Making of Modern America written by Richard White and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2011-05-31 with total page 1000 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize "A powerful book, crowded with telling details and shrewd observations." —Michael Kazin, New York Times Book Review The transcontinental railroads were the first corporate behemoths. Their attempts to generate profits from proliferating debt sparked devastating economic panics. Their dependence on public largesse drew them into the corridors of power, initiating new forms of corruption. Their operations rearranged space and time, remade the landscape of the West, and opened new ways of life and work. Their discriminatory rates sparked a new antimonopoly politics. The transcontinentals were pivotal actors in the making of modern America, but the triumphal myths of the golden spike, Robber Barons larger than life, and an innovative capitalism all die here. Instead we have a new vision of the Gilded Age, often darkly funny, that shows history to be rooted in failure as well as success.

Download or read book Evolving Financial Markets and International Capital Flows written by Lance E. Davis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-05-07 with total page 1002 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the impact of British capital flows on the evolution of capital markets in four countries - Argentina, Australia, Canada, and the United States - over the years 1870 to 1914. In substantive chapters on each country it offers parallel histories of the evolution of their financial infrastructures - commercial banks, non-bank intermediaries, primary security markets, formal secondary security markets, and the institutions that provide the international financial links connecting the frontier country with the British capital market. At one level, the work constitutes a quantitative history of the development of the capital markets of five countries in the late nineteenth century. At a second level, it provides the basis for a useable taxonomy for the study of institutional invention and innovation. At a third, it suggests some lessons from the past about modern policy issues.
