Book excerpt: Five years ago, I had an audition for the ballet company of my dreams. Five years ago, my boyfriend purposely broke my toes and ruined my dreams. Two days later, I found out I'm a witch. I thought my ballet days were over. I just graduated from the academy to work as a federal agent with the Paranormal Investigation Bureau. I get called into the office for something that could change my life permanently. Meaning, I could die. That ballet company I never got to audition for is doing The Sugar Skull Girl. This ballet has never been seen on stage before. I don't have the full story, but rumors are that any time someone tries to attempt this ballet, things soon turn fatal. I've been told to strap my pointe shoes on and use my witch abilities to go undercover at the ballet company. I had my reservations about taking this job, even if it had once been a dream of mine to dance for The P. The artistic director is a horny Unseelie rake who makes casting decisions with his cock. The prima ballerina here needs to retire, but she's totally toxic about making sure no one upstages her. She has a club of mean girl ballet dancers willing to ruin careers just for the spotlight...or maybe just for fun. Not only do I have to survive gossip, hot male dancers who like to sniff around new ballerinas, and toxic prima ballerinas, I have to figure out what is going on with this ballet before we all die. I might not like these people, but I'm here to save their lives.

Book Ghost of the Ozarks

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brooks Blevins
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 2012-03-15
  • ISBN : 0252094115

Download or read book Ghost of the Ozarks written by Brooks Blevins and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1929, in a remote county of the Arkansas Ozarks, the gruesome murder of harmonica-playing drifter Connie Franklin and the brutal rape of his teenaged fiancée captured the attention of a nation on the cusp of the Great Depression. National press from coast to coast ran stories of the sensational exploits of night-riding moonshiners, powerful "Barons of the Hills," and a world of feudal oppression in the isolation of the rugged Ozarks. The ensuing arrest of five local men for both crimes and the confusion and superstition surrounding the trial and conviction gave Stone County a dubious and short-lived notoriety. Closely examining how the story and its regional setting were interpreted by the media, Brooks Blevins recounts the gripping events of the murder investigation and trial, where a man claiming to be the murder victim--the "Ghost" of the Ozarks--appeared to testify. Local conditions in Stone County, which had no electricity and only one long-distance telephone line, frustrated the dozen or more reporters who found their way to the rural Ozarks, and the developments following the arrests often prompted reporters' caricatures of the region: accusations of imposture and insanity, revelations of hidden pasts and assumed names, and threats of widespread violence. Locating the past squarely within the major currents of American history, Ghost of the Ozarks: Murder and Memory in the Upland South paints a convincing backdrop to a story that, more than 80 years later, remains riddled with mystery.

Book As Alive So Dead

  • Release : 2011-11-08
  • ISBN : 9781929309108
  • Pages : 183 pages

Download or read book As Alive So Dead written by Mary Ann Winkowski and published by . This book was released on 2011-11-08 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Alive, So Dead is a collection of memoirs by a woman with a unique ability: she can see and talk to ghosts. Because of this, she is able to write a book that shows the human side of the paranormal-stories about ghosts told from the perspectives of the ghosts themselves. Recounting the stories of those who have died in a variety of ways, As Alive, So Dead looks at death through the eyes of the victims of murder, suicide, and accident, as well as glimpses into the afterlife of Native Americans, patients kept alive on life-support, and even animals. Far from the sensationalized tales of most ghost lore, As Alive, So Dead presents real stories of troubled people-both the living and the dead-not simply the terror of sinister manifestations. As Alive, So Dead is a lesson on death and the immortality of the spirit that only someone who can actually speak with the deceased could teach. Originally published in 2000 with a limited run, As Alive, So Dead sold out immediately and had been out of print ever since. Over the next decade, Mary Ann Winkowski inspired and served as a consultant to TV's Ghost Whisperer, which starred Jennifer Love Hewitt and ran on CBS for five seasons. She also published four additional books, including When Ghosts Speak; Beyond Delicious: The Ghost Whisperer's Cookbook; and two works of fiction based on her experiences. Despite this, the one thing she has been repeatedly asked by fans and clients over the years is where they can get a copy of her first memoir: As Alive, So Dead. Finally back in print, these requests can now be filled. The second edition of As Alive, So Dead has been reformatted for better readability and includes the last names of Mary Ann and her ghostwriter, David Powers, who previously left their last names off the book and published it simply as Mary Ann and David Christopher.

Download or read book Corbett Mack written by Michael Hittman and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2013-09-15 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corbett Mack (1892–1974), was a Northern Paiute of mixed ancestry, caught between Native American and white worlds. A generation before, his tribe had brought forth the prophet Wovoka, whose Ghost Dance swept the Indian world in the 1890s. Mack’s world was a harsh and bitter place after the last Native American uprisings had been brutally crushed; a life of servitude to white farmers and addiction to opium. Hittman uses Mack’s own words to retell his story, an uncompromising account of a traumatized life that typified his generation, yet nonetheless made meaningful through the perseverance of Paiute cultural traditions.

Book We Do Not Want the Gates Closed between Us

Download or read book We Do Not Want the Gates Closed between Us written by Justin Gage and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2020-10-08 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1860s and 1870s, the United States government forced most western Native Americans to settle on reservations. These ever-shrinking pieces of land were meant to relocate, contain, and separate these Native peoples, isolating them from one another and from the white populations coursing through the plains. We Do Not Want the Gates Closed Between Us tells the story of how Native Americans resisted this effort by building vast intertribal networks of communication, threaded together by letter writing and off-reservation visiting. Faced with the consequences of U.S. colonialism—the constraints, population loss, and destitution—Native Americans, far from passively accepting their fate, mobilized to control their own sources of information, spread and reinforce ideas, and collectively discuss and mount resistance against onerous government policies. Justin Gage traces these efforts, drawing on extensive new evidence, including more than one hundred letters written by nineteenth-century Native Americans. His work shows how Lakotas, Cheyennes, Utes, Shoshones, Kiowas, and dozens of other western tribal nations shrewdly used the U.S. government’s repressive education system and mechanisms of American settler colonialism, notably the railroads and the Postal Service, to achieve their own ends. Thus Natives used literacy, a primary tool of assimilation for U.S. policymakers, to decolonize their lives much earlier than historians have noted. Whereas previous histories have assumed that the Ghost Dance itself was responsible for the creation of brand-new networks among western tribes, this book suggests that the intertribal networks formed in the 1870s and 1880s actually facilitated the rapid dissemination of the Ghost Dance in 1889 and 1890. Documenting the evolution and operation of intertribal networking, Gage demonstrates its effectiveness—and recognizes for the first time how, through Native activism, long-distance, intercultural communication persisted in the colonized American West.
