Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mersey Estuary is widely regarded as one of the most polluted estuaries in Europe. After more than 200 years of neglect the tide of pollution is beginning to turn. This report explains the background to pollution of the estuary; examines the physical and chemical processes which influence water quality; highlights reduction in pollution loads to the estuary; and comments on current water quality status. The report looks at improvements which have occurred in recent years and examines future prospects for the estuary.

Book Mersey Estuary Management Plan

Download or read book Mersey Estuary Management Plan written by University of Liverpool and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estuary planning is rapidly emerging as an important focus of environmental policy throughout much of the developed world. In Britain, for example, almost every major estuary is the subject of a management plan exercise involving the development of a strategic policy framework as the first step in establishing an estuary planning process. The impetus for such plans has often come from local bodies in the public, private and voluntary sectors, and has arisen from specific issues that require a strategic and coordinated response. This volume is concerned with the Mersey Estuary, the first highly developed estuary in Western Europe for which a management plan has been prepared. Estuaries of this kind present a particularly difficult challenge in planning terms, given their inherent complexity, the extremely wide range of issues to be confronted and the large number of organizations with a vested interest in river activities. Given that there were no "models" to follow, it has been necessary in the Mersey Plan to develop a completely new approach. This is reflected in the strategic policy framework that has been produced, which enables policies to be developed systematically having regard to their wide consequences. Individual policy areas have also required novel treatment: particular examples are the approaches adopted in developing policies for estuary dynamics, water quality and pollution, biodiversity, land use and development, commercial navigation and port development, urban regeneration, and tourism and recreation.

Book The Estuary as a Filter

    Book Details:
  • Author : Victor S Kennedy
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2013-09-25
  • ISBN : 1483277437
  • Pages : 528 pages

Download or read book The Estuary as a Filter written by Victor S Kennedy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-25 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Estuary as a Filter contains the proceedings of the Estuarine Research Federation’s seventh biennial conference at Virginia Beach, Virginia, in late October, 1983. In five invited sessions, scientists and managers considered the physical, geological, chemical-geochemical, and biological processes involved in the ""filtering"" role of estuaries and reflected on management implications of these matters. Most of their presentations and reflections are included in this book in order to demonstrate what is known and what needs to be explored further. The papers in this volume are grouped as they were presented at the conference. Thus, physical oceanographers begin the work by considering turbulence, mixing, and circulation processes in estuaries. Geologists then examine estuarine sedimentation, including the roles of flocculation and bioturbation in accelerating this process. Chemists and geochemists describe the interactions among and effects of inputs of nutrients, metals, and organic matter into estuaries, and the fate of radionuclides in these systems. Biological and biochemical processes involving surface foam, microbes, sea grasses, and wetlands are considered, along with carefully derived nutrient budgets of selected estuarine regions. Finally, some of the problems facing managers of estuarine ecosystems in three areas of the United States are described, along with the success story of the ongoing rehabilitation of the Thames Estuary in England.

Book Biomonitoring of Trace Aquatic Contaminants

Download or read book Biomonitoring of Trace Aquatic Contaminants written by David J.H. Phillips and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years ago, researchers wishing to identify contaminated areas in aquatic environments generally took water samples, and analysed them badly (as we have since discovered) for a few "pollutants" which were of topical note at the time (and which could be quantified by the methods then available). Today, the use of aquatic organisms as biomonitors in preference to water analysis has become commonplace, and many national and interna tional programmes exist around the world involving such studies. We believe that this trend will continue, and have complete faith in the methodology (when it is employed correctly). We hope that the following text assists in some part in attaining this goal, such that the quality of our most basic global resource -water - is adequately protected in the future. DAVE PHILLIPS, PHIL RAINBOW England, March 1992 vii Acknowledgements Our thanks for contributions to this book are due to several individuals and groups, for varying reasons. Firstly, a co-authored book is always a triumph, and we trust that the following text is an acceptable compromise of the views of two individual authors, on a complex and developing topic. Secondly, many of the ideas herein have crystallised over the last two decades as the field has grown, and we are individually and collectively grateful to a number of researchers for their insight and assistance.
