Book The Fasting Girl

Download or read book The Fasting Girl written by Michelle Stacey and published by Tarcher. This book was released on 2002 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Why? Because Fancher, experiencing chronic paralysis, trances, and seizures, was also reportedly able to "live on air." For more than a decade, it was widely reputed, she ate almost nothing. Her case became a lightning rod for physicians and theologians who locked horns over her controversial ability, inspiring a frenzy of tabloid hype and scientific debate." "The Fancher case has remained an unsolved mystery ever since. How, and how much, did she eat? Was Mollie a media-hungry fraud, playing on a public desire for miracles, or simply hysterical, emotionally disturbed, delusional? Was she history's first victim of anorexia nervosa, or a sufferer of anorexia mirabilis, the medieval phenomenon of "fasting saints"? Or was she merely a product of her time and place - an anxious crossroads of nineteenth-century nervousness and twentieth-century neurosis, heightened by rapid industrial progress and an intensified pace of life?"--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: An acclaimed classic from the award-winning author of The Body Project presents a history of women's food-refusal dating back as far as the sixteenth century, providing compassion to victims and their families. Here is a tableau of female self-denial: medieval martyrs who used starvation to demonstrate religious devotion, "wonders of science" whose families capitalized on their ability to survive on flower petals and air, silent screen stars whose strict "slimming" regimens inspired a generation. Here, too, is a fascinating look at how the cultural ramifications of the Industrial Revolution produced a disorder that continues to render privileged young women helpless. Incisive, compassionate, illuminating, Fasting Girls offers real understanding to victims and their families, clinicians, and all women who are interested in the origins and future of this complex, modern and characteristically female disease.

Book Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena

Download or read book Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena written by Helmut J. Schwarz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 913 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 7th International Workshop in the series LASER INTERACTION AND RELATED PLASMA PHENOMENA continued the high standards established by the earlier meetings in this series. It was organized under the directorship of Heinrich Hora and George H. Miley at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, with Fred Schwirzke as the local organizer. These workshops have presented many "firsts" in laser plasma interactions and especially in laser fusion. Some presentations provided continuity with the past, most represented advancements; however, in some workshops, progress did not appear to be occurring as rapidly as in others. Therefore, it was a special pleasure that in the present workshop when, on October 30, 1985, Chiyoe Yamanaka disclosed a breakthrough in the generation of fusion neutrons with laser fusion targets. The 7th Workshop also continued to represent other new fields of laser-plasma interaction. The progress reported was most pronounced in the fields of X-ray lasers, laser acceleration of particles by electrostatic double layers in plasmas, and a particle beam technique to solve the geometric problem of muon-catalyzed fusion. The development of laser-plasma interactions at medium to high laser intensities may be seen in its whole complexity from a brief review of prior conferences. At the first Workshop in 1969, a comprehensive review of the field was presented by the speakers with the opening address by N.

Book The Physical Phenomena of Mysticism With Especial Reference to the Stigmata Divine and Diabolic

This book was released on 2024-07-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of mysticism, with a particular focus on the appearance of bodily wounds that bear resemblance to Jesus Christ’s crucifixion wounds, known as Stigmata. First published in 1947, The Physical Phenomena of Mysticism details the Christian mysticism of Stigmata. Those who lead a virtuous, Christian life may discover wounds in similar places to that of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion wounds, for example, the hands and feet from the nails, the head from the crown of thorns, or the shoulders and back from the weight of carrying the cross. Montague Summers was an English clergyman, best known for his studies on vampires, witches, and werewolves. In this volume, he explores and analyses divine and diabolic phenomena.
