Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gambling captures as nothing else the drama of the "long eighteenth century" between the age of religious wars and the age of revolutions. The society that was confronted with games of chance pursued as commercial ventures also came to grips with unprecedented social mobility, floated by new wealth from new sources created fortunes from trade in sugar, cotton, ivory, silk, tea, or enslaved human beings. Likewise, play for money was prominent in the public imagination as money itself, deployed through an ever expanding and ever more sophisticated range of mechanisms, increasingly invaded public awareness, as when prospective spouses in period fiction were rated in terms of annual income as if they were municipal bonds. Similarly, the archetypal figure of the gambler captured the imagination of the public in fiction, media, and politics. At the same time, new interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics - encouraged and bankrolled by those in power - fostered a new and unprecedented appreciation for mathematical probability and its applications, opening the possibility that games of chance might be pursued as a profitable commercial venture. The Gambling Century focuses like no previous work on those who enabled, facilitated, and profited from gambling, as well as on efforts to regulate or outlaw it. Using extensive archival material as well as printed sources, it follows its subjects from the Court to the coffeehouse, to private clubs and "at homes" in townhouses, all of which prefigure that quintessentially modern gambling space, the casino.

Book excerpt: In 17th century Venice a young woman discovers she's pregnant and comes up with a perfect alibi. She claims she's had an immaculate conception and will have a virgin birth but this doesn't stop her family from banishing her to a convent. Like many convents of the time it is home to one of Venice's worst-kept secrets. Behind its forbidding looking walls, veils and vows do nothing to curb the appetites of the lusty residents – including some men. Disguised as nuns, they enjoy the lavish banquets and balls of convent life with their lovers, liberated women who have the freedom to compose music, plays and poetry, often penned with male pseudonyms and performed to audiences from all walks of life. The Doge supports a Venetian virgin birth. It will rock religious boats (and gondolas), strike a blow against Rome's monopoly on virgin births, boost Venetian Empire trade and bring the world to Venice's doorstep. It isn't the first virgin birth. The twin founders of Rome were born of the mythical Rhea Silvia, a virgin. It had to be just a matter of time before another one popped up and this time it's in Venice and the Doge is all for it. Too dangerous to reveal until now, this satire and rollicking comedy tells how women struggled with families, husbands and other enemies, and were dominated by an overzealous church bent on robbing them of their birthright. It is also a useful virgin birth DIY and includes tips on creating miracles. It speaks to today's world where religion and other superstitions continue to oppress so many and cause so much suffering.

Book Hellacious California

Download or read book Hellacious California written by Gary Noy and published by Heyday.ORIM. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Teems with bittersweet compounds of 19th-century nefariousness, including . . . gambling, knife fights, the demon drink, con artistry, and prostitution.” —Los Angeles Review of Books In 1855 an ex-miner lamented that nineteenth-century California “can and does furnish the best bad things,” including “purer liquors . . . finer tobacco, truer guns and pistols, larger dirks and bowie knives, and prettier courtezans [sic]” than anywhere else in America. Lured by boons of gold and other exploitable resources, California’s settler population mushroomed under Mexican and early American control, and this period of rapid transformation gave rise to a freewheeling culture best epitomized by its entertainments. Hellacious California tours the rambunctious and occasionally appalling amusements of the Golden State: gambling, gun duels, knife fights, gracious dining and gluttony, prostitution, fandangos, cigars, con artistry, and the demon drink. Historian Gary Noy unearths myriad primary sources, many of which have never before been published, to spin his true tall tales that are by turns humorous and horrifying. Whether detailing the exploits of an inebriated stallion, gambling parlors as a reinforcement and subversion of racial norms, armed skirmishes over eggs, or the ins and outs of the “Spirit Lover” scam, Noy expertly situates these stories in the context of a live-for-the-moment society characterized by audacity, bigotry, and risk. “Confidently carries the reader into the everyday lives of early Californians. The focus on Californians’ popular pastimes . . . with an eye on vice, decadence, and scandal, makes this book a rowdy tour.” —Dr. Patrick Ettinger, Professor of History, California State University, Sacramento; Former Director of CSUS Public History Program and the Capital Campus Oral History Program
