Book Waves in Complex Media

Download or read book Waves in Complex Media written by Luca Dal Negro and published by . This book was released on 2022-05-04 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a clear and interdisciplinary introduction to the structural and scattering properties of complex photonic media, focusing on deterministic aperiodic structures and their conceptual roots in geometry and number theory. It integrates important results and recent developments into a coherent and physically consistent story, balanced between mathematical designs, scattering and optical theories, and engineering device applications. The book includes discussions of emerging device applications in metamaterials and nano-optics technology. Both academia and industry will find the book of interest as it develops the underlying physical and mathematical background in partnership with engineering applications, providing a perspective on both fundamental optical sciences and photonic device technology. Emphasizing the comprehension of physical concepts and their engineering implications over the more formal developments, this is an essential introduction to the stimulating and fast-growing field of aperiodic optics and complex photonics.

Book Optical Studies of Partially Coherent Diffraction and the Ergodic Hypothesis

Download or read book Optical Studies of Partially Coherent Diffraction and the Ergodic Hypothesis written by George O. REYNOLDS and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diffraction by apertures illuminated by partially coherent light, diffraction by apertures containing random phase disturbances, experimental demonstration of the ergodic hypothesis, and the concept of cross spectral purity are considered. In diffraction experiments using partially coherent illumination, it is observed that as the ratio of aperture size to coherence interval increases (i.e., the illumination becomes less coherent) the sharp minima present in the diffraction pattern disappear and a shifting of the minima occurs. The results are compared with existing theories, and the agreement is excellent. It is experimentally shown that random phase disturbances placed in the diffracting aperture distort an individual diffraction pattern. In the corresponding ensemble-averaged experiment, the distortion is reduced and the diffraction pattern is more readily identified. A dynamical model of lycopodium particles suspended in water demonstrated the equivalence of time and ensemble averaging (ergodic hypothesis). The ensemble-averaged results agree quantitatively with theoretical calculations. In investigating the concept of cross spectral purity (J. Opt. Soc. Am. 51:1342 (1961)), it is shown that quasi monochromaticity is synonymous with spectral purity and that spectral impurity is synonymous with polychromaticity. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, which has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969, is de voted to the recording, summarizing and indexing of astronomical publications throughout the world. It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 13 contains literature published in 1975 and received before August 15, 1975; some older literature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included. We acknowledge with thanks contributions to this volume by Dr. J. Bouska, who surveyed journals and publications in the Czech language and supplied us with abstracts in English, and by the Common wealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (C.S.I.R.O.), Sydney, for providing titles and abstracts of papers on radio astronomy. We want to acknowledge valuable contributions to this vol ume by Zentralstelle ftir Atomkemenergie-Dokumentation, Leopoldshafen, which supported our ab stracting service by sending us retrospective literature searches.

Book New Directions in Research with Third Generation Soft X Ray Synchrotron Radiation Sources

Download or read book New Directions in Research with Third Generation Soft X Ray Synchrotron Radiation Sources written by A.S. Schlachter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soft X-rays are a powerful probe of matter. They interact selectively with electrons in atoms and molecules and can be used to study atomic physics, chemical reactions, surfaces and solids, and biological entities. Over the past 20 years, synchrotrons have emerged as powerful sources of soft X-rays for experimental use. A new, third generation of synchrotron light sources is scheduled to start operation over the next few years, beginning in 1993. These facilities are distinguished by their ultra-low emittance electron beams and by their undulators -- precisely engineered magnetic devices that cause the electrons passing through them to produce highly coherent X-rays and ultraviolet light of unprecedented spectral brightness. This volume emphasizes third-generation sources that produce light in the 10 eV--10 KeV energy range. It describes potential applications ranging from the purely scientific to the commercially viable and includes chapters on the practical aspects of designing undulators and beam line optics. Unique in its coverage, the book is a vital addition to the library of any scientist who needs information on the world's most advanced imaging and spectroscopic techniques. (ABSTRACT) This volume emphasizes the applications of new third generation synchrotron radiation sources that produce light in the ultraviolet and soft X-ray range of the spectrum. The unprecedented brightness of this light enables experiments to be conducted with greatly increased spatial and spectral resolution. Scientists can exploit these properties for imaging and spectroscopic applications that until now were impossible or impractical. Prominent researchers in the field describe these applications and others made possible by the light's pulsed time structure and polarization. The volume also includes chapters on the practical aspects of designing undulators and beam line optics.
