Book The Nurses

Download or read book The Nurses written by Alexandra Robbins and published by Workman Publishing. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller. “A funny, intimate, and often jaw-dropping account of life behind the scenes.”—People Nurses is the compelling story of the year in the life of four nurses, and the drama, unsung heroism, and unique sisterhood of nursing—one of the world’s most important professions (nurses save lives every day), and one of the world’s most dangerous, filled with violence, trauma, and PTSD. In following four nurses, Alexandra Robbins creates sympathetic characters while diving deep into their world of controlled chaos. It’s a world of hazing—“nurses eat their young.” Sex—not exactly like on TV, but surprising just the same. Drug abuse—disproportionately a problem among the best and the brightest, and a constant temptation. And bullying—by peers, by patients, by hospital bureaucrats, and especially by doctors, an epidemic described as lurking in the “shadowy, dark corners of our profession.” The result is a page-turning, shocking look at our health-care system.

Book My Miracle

Download or read book My Miracle written by Evelyn Stewart and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-09 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I, too, was a victim of abuse. I thought I had to endure the suffering. Bless your good works and your caring heart." Francine, internationally acclaimed poet (http: //poetry-emotion.com) "This isn't the same ol'-same ol' story of a woman raised with incest in her background and an alcoholic parent to contend with. It's the story of a woman born into a loving family who suffered at the hands of a man who lured into his web, then spent the next thirty years of their life attempting to destroy her. He only made her stronger. It's the story of our culture, with a rich texture of the 40s, 50s and 60s woven into the fabric of the author's astounding words. Spellbinding, with a hint of John Steinbeck on every page." Marjorie Cox, public speaker "I live every day of my life grateful to have survived what so many young women haven't survived. Maybe I had to tough it out in order to pass along some of my history to those who feel that they, and they alone, are in such abusive situations that no one will ever understand. My message to them is to believe in miracles. And to believe in yourself. With God, all things are possible. I'm living proof of the truth of that statement." Evelyn Fort Stewart

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I first came to America in 1967, one of my dreams was to locate my O'Dell relatives from my grandfather's side. My Dad and my aunt Nancy always extoll their Dad with such affection that I always wish I have known him. The first few years in the US was a struggle of daily living, raising 4 children and working full time that my dreams of ever connecting with them faded into oblivion. In 2012, a premed student from the Santo Tomas University [UST] connected with everyone through facebook with an O'Dell surname with his research into the O'Dell family through Wikepedia, the free encyclopedia en.Wikepedia.org. Charles Wallace O'Dell is a 6th generation O'Dell and it took another Wallace in the family to uncover the family history. O'dell family...........originally owned by an Anglo-Saxon king; according to Wikepedia in Bedfordshire: O'dell is a village and civil parish in the North of the county of Bedfordshire in England. Originally owned by an Anglo-Saxon king, the barony of Woadhyll was transferred to the Norman Count of Flanders after the Norman invasion. He later changed his last name to Woadhyll, which means, a hill full of Woads, and as time went on the barony was changed to O'dell which was ruled by Barons bearing the name of O'dell. By the 1600's the family had a quarrel and was split into two, leaving the barony without a legal male heir. The quarrel stemmed from religion. The family was divided into the Protestants and the Catholics. The Protestants moved to Newfoundland in Virginia, bearing the name odell while the Catholics moved to Ireland changing their name to O'Dell to evade Irish reprisals against the British.Eventually, the Catholics moved to Nebraska and that was the start of the family's story. Our great grandfather, Wallace Scott O'Dell [1852-1915] married Cora Davis. Wallace Scott died in 1915 and was survived by 8 children and his wife. His brother could not attend his funeral, and also his son named Thomas Leroy O'Dell nicknamed Roy was in the Philippine Islands at the time of his death in Nebraska. They were married in Pennsylvania and continued to reside there until Wallace was 17 years old, when the family moved to Saunders County in Nebraska. His father homesteading land 2 and a half miles east of Weston. At that time, the County was in the main, a frontier district and the town of Weston had not been founded yet. Mr O'Dell proved up to his claim and remained there on until his demise in 1909 at the age of 86. His wife died in 1911 at 84 years old. They became parents of 7 children. Wallace Scott is the third child. Wallace Scott attended School in Pennsylvania and remained at home for sometime after the family left the County. At 25 years of age,he was married and began farming in Chapman precinct, buying railroad land which he improved. He was a successful Agriculturist, being energetic and progressive, and accumulated competence as the years went by which enabled him to retire from active life in 1910. He sold his farm that year and moved to Weston. On July of 1877, Mr O'Dell married Miss Cora Davis, a daughter of Captain William and Nancy [Whiting] Davis. Book The Art of Waiting

Download or read book The Art of Waiting written by Belle Boggs and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant exploration of the natural, medical, psychological, and political facets of fertility When Belle Boggs's "The Art of Waiting" was published in Orion in 2012, it went viral, leading to republication in Harper's Magazine, an interview on NPR's The Diane Rehm Show, and a spot at the intersection of "highbrow" and "brilliant" in New York magazine's "Approval Matrix." In that heartbreaking essay, Boggs eloquently recounts her realization that she might never be able to conceive. She searches the apparently fertile world around her--the emergence of thirteen-year cicadas, the birth of eaglets near her rural home, and an unusual gorilla pregnancy at a local zoo--for signs that she is not alone. Boggs also explores other aspects of fertility and infertility: the way longing for a child plays out in the classic Coen brothers film Raising Arizona; the depiction of childlessness in literature, from Macbeth to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?; the financial and legal complications that accompany alternative means of family making; the private and public expressions of iconic writers grappling with motherhood and fertility. She reports, with great empathy, complex stories of couples who adopted domestically and from overseas, LGBT couples considering assisted reproduction and surrogacy, and women and men reflecting on childless or child-free lives. In The Art of Waiting, Boggs deftly distills her time of waiting into an expansive contemplation of fertility, choice, and the many possible roads to making a life and making a family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the fascinating stories of pioneering ministers, this book reveals a unique picture of progressive changes occurring in the Christian tradition. Meeting challenges and overcoming obstacles, these twelve diverse ministers are changing the church as they take prophetic stands on gender, race, interfaith cooperation, ecology, sexual orientation, economic opportunity, and other social justice issues. Believing in the power of sacred symbolism to shape social reality and toÊprovide a foundation for justice and freedom for all people, these ministers lead worship with inclusive language and imagery for humanity and divinity. They include multicultural female and male images of the Divine. Their stories affirm the connection between this expansive theology and an ethic of justice and equality in human relationships. In working from within to change the church, these ministers have risked censure by denominational authorities, loss of opportunities for promotion to larger congregations or to prestigious denominational positions, and even loss of their jobs. They have found creative ways to balance advocating for change and working to support the church, using their positions as ordained clergy to bring liberating change to the church and the wider culture.
