Book Policy Controversies in Higher Education

Download or read book Policy Controversies in Higher Education written by Samuel Kimball Gove and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1986-11-18 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we enter the mid-eighties, higher education is faced with deepening crises stemming from declines in both funding and enrollment and from rapidly changing social needs. This volume of essays, contributed by distinguished scholars from various disciplines, identifies and discusses the many problems that will require attention in the coming decades if our colleges and universities are to continue to supply quality educational opportunities on a broad scale. In seeking solutions to these problems, the authors stress the need for a realistic appraisal of the policymaking system. It is emphasized that educators and policymakers will need to take into account the levels at which political and policy-making activity occur and the complex political interrelationships existing among the different levels of institutional, governmental, and public authority.

Book The Progressive Education Fallacy in Developing Countries

Download or read book The Progressive Education Fallacy in Developing Countries written by Gerard Guthrie and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-23 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a provocative but carefully argued addition to the theory and practice of education in developing countries. The book provides an ethical and empirical justification for support of formalistic teaching in primary and secondary schools in developing countries. It also refutes the application of progressive education principles to curriculum and pre- and in-service teacher education in such contexts. The central focus of this book is the formalistic teaching prevalent in the classrooms of many developing countries. Formalistic (‘teacher-centred’, ‘traditional’, ‘didactic’, ‘pedagogic’) teaching is appropriate in the many countries with revelatory epistemologies, unpopular and old-fashioned though these methods may seem in some western, especially Anglophone, ones. Formalism has been the object of many failed progressive curriculum and teacher education reforms in developing countries for some 50 years.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Standardized testing bears the twin burden of controversy and complexity and is difficult for many to understand either dispassionately or technically. In response to this reality, Richard P. Phelps and a team of well-noted measurement specialists describe the current state of public debate about testing across fields, explain and refute the primary criticisms of testing, acknowledge the limitations and undesirable consequences of testing, provide suggestions for improving testing practices, and present a vigorous defense of testing as well as a practical vision for its promise and future." "Those who are charged with translating the science of testing into public information and policy - including administrators, social scientists, test publishers, professors, and journalists who specialize in education and psychology - will find a wealth of valuable information here with which to balance the debate."--BOOK JACKET.
