Book The Fall of Troy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fall of Troy Classic Reprint written by Quintus Smyrnaeus and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fall of Troy Homer's Iliad begins towards the close of the last of the ten years of the Trojan War: its incidents extend over some fifty days only, and it ends with the burial of Hector. The things which came before and after were told by other bards, who between them narrated the whole "cycle" of the events of the war, and so were called the Cyclic Poets. Of their works none have survived; but the story of what befell between Hector's funeral and the taking of Troy is told in detail, and well told, in a poem about half as long as the Iliad. Some four hundred years after Christ there lived at Smyrna a poet of whom we know scarce anything, save that his first name was Quintus. He had saturated himself with the spirit of Homer, he had caught the ring of his music, and he perhaps had before him the works of those Cyclic Poets whose stars had paled before the sun. We have practically no external evidence as to the date or place of birth of Quintus of Smyrna, or for the sources whence he drew his materials. Book The Siege and Fall of Troy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of I, Claudius reimagines the Trojan War for the young reader. “The writing is clear, straightforward, and, in places, poetic” (Kirkus Reviews). The Iliad has it all: war, corruption, greed, power, and the passions of both gods and men. In this detailed retelling, Robert Graves draws the major characters of this timeless classic in broad, gritty strokes, making Agamemnon, Paris, Odysseus, and others accessible for young readers. Written with a younger audience in mind, The Siege and Fall of Troy is nevertheless exhaustively researched and compelling enough to be of interest to both students of history and adult readers. With humor, wit, and energy, Graves is expert at weaving a story based on exhaustive scholarly research and deep imaginative prowess.

Book The Story of Troy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Troy Classic Reprint written by M. Clarke and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Story of Troy" is a work of history written by author and historian M. Clarke. It is an excellent choice for those wishing to familiarise themselves with the story in a quick and efficient manner. Clarke opens his book with a brief discussion of Homer, author of "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey," and whose writing serves as a major source of information about the history of Troy. The author then begins his interpretation of Troy with several chapters examining the city's geography and geo-political status. Of course, any history of Troy must address the Trojan War, and it is on this topic that Clarke spends the majority of his time. The writings of Homer, as translated by Alexander Pope, serve as Clarke's primary source of information about the war. The book proceeds in a logical fashion, and concludes with a chapter on the death of Achilles and the status of the Greek chiefs after the war. Clarke has created a well-written account of Troy's history. Although written in the nineteenth century, and therefore lacking in some of the historical breakthroughs of the modern world, "The Story of Troy" is still an interesting and useful interpretation of the events detailed. Clarke's writing is concise and definitive and this book could best be categorized as an introductory history. Readers interested in a basic history of Troy will enjoy "The Story of Troy." Clarke's passion is clear and his work here is commendable. This title is a worthy addition to the personal library of history enthusiasts everywhere. Book excerpt: In The Fall of Troy, acclaimed novelist and historian Peter Ackroyd creates a fascinating narrative that follows an archaeologist's obsession with finding the ruins of Troy, depicting the blurred line between truth and deception.Obermann, an acclaimed German scholar, fervently believes that his discovery of the ancient ruins of Troy will prove that the heroes of the Iliad, a work he has cherished all his life, actually existed. But Sophia, Obermann's young Greek wife, has her suspicions about his motivations — suspicions that only increase when she finds a cache of artifacts that her husband has hidden, and when a more skeptical archaeologist dies from a mysterious fever. With exquisite detail, Ackroyd again demonstrates his ability to evoke time and place, creating a brilliantly told story of heroes and scoundrels, human aspirations and follies, and the temptation to shape the truth to fit a passionately held belief.

Book Two Dramatizations From Vergil

Download or read book Two Dramatizations From Vergil written by Frank Justus Miller and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Dramatizations From Vergil: I. Dido the P nician Queen; II. The Fall of Troy The epic is a drama on gigantic scale; its acts are years or centuries; its actors, heroes; its stage, the world of life; its events, those mighty cycles of activity that leave their deep impress on human history. Homer's epics reenact the stirring scenes of the ten years' siege of Troy, and the perilous, long wanderings of Ulysses before he reached his home; Vergil's epic action embraces the fall of Troy and the never-ending struggles of AEneas and his band of exiles till Troy should rise again in the western world; Tasso pictures the heroic war of Godfrey and his crusaders, who strove to free the holy city of Jerusalem; and Milton, ignoring all bounds of time and space, fills his triple stage of heaven, earth, and hell with angels, men, and devils, all working out the most stupendous problems of human destiny. Such gigantic dramas could be presented on no human stage. But in them all are lesser actions of marked dramatic possibility. Notable among these are the events culminating in the death of Hector, the home coming of Ulysses and his destruction of the suitors, Satan's rebellion and expulsion from heaven, and the temptation and fall of man. All these furnish abundant material for the tragic stage; but all leave much to be supplied of speech and action before the full-rounded drama could take form. In the AEneid alone is found, among the minor parts which make up the epic whole, a dramatic action well-nigh complete - the love story of AEneas and Dido. With every hour we put between ourselves and the city his spirits rose; he laughed and 'chattered like the child he really was. But he never forgot that the jour ney was part of his training as a prince and a soldier. His quick glance missed nothing, and his comments were shrewd. There Was a rude sort of cottage at the edge of a deep wood on the lowest slope of the mountain, where I planned to spend the night. The herdsman who lived there with his wife was known to me, and Pielus had arranged our coming, or we might not have supped so well; as it was a kid steeped in milk, some small cakes and fruit were set before us. The herdsman's wife would have fussed over Aeneas, had not the old man muttered to her that the boy was not to be treated so. Aeneas had been in the saddle most of the day, and was soon asleep, on the low couch piled with skins that had been prepared for him. Archelaus and I sat in the doorway, and evening came down on the Trojan plain. The stars came out, slowly at first, then by constella tions; the woman Rhodope watched sleeping Aeneas hungrily. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Vindication of Homer and of the Ancient Poets and Historians, Who Have Recorded the Siege and Fall of Troy It is a misfortune attending on all old and established truths, that whilst they are received in the world as matters of general notoriety, or undoubted authority, we are contented to take them upon trust, and, not irrationally, give credit to the opinions of those, who had better opportunities than ourselves to judge of their truth or falsehood. Yet this very circumstance, by which truth extends the frontiers of her empire, greatly weakens her internal powers of defence, and lulled into security by the number of her adherents she is too often unprepared to ward off the attacks against her person at home. In the present instance, Mr. Bryant has afforded us a linking proof of this assertion. The story of the Trojan War rendered immortal by the greatest Poet of Antiquity, was received in early Greece as an historical fact, from thence it has travelled down to us; but it had already been the means of conferring so much celebrity upon the pen of Homer, that whilst the historians of all ages recorded the event, the Poets embellished and obscured a plain tale with every charm of fiction. Relying on this general, if not universal assent, we add our own tacit acquiescence to an opinion prevalent through a long succession of ages. Book The Siege of Troy And the Wanderings of Ulysses Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Siege of Troy And the Wanderings of Ulysses Classic Reprint written by Charles Henry Hanson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-14 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Siege of Troy, And, the Wanderings of Ulysses The design of this book needs but little explanation. Of all the legends of Ancient Greece, there are none which are so constantly referred to in classic or in modern literature as those connected with the Trojan War. Mythic though they be, they may be said to form the foundation of Greek History. Of the cycle of epic poems in which they were embodied, only the great Homeric Poems, the Iliad and the Odyssey, have been preserved. But these epics present nothing more than episodes of the long story, though it is true that those episodes are the most important of the whole. The endeavour of the present writer has been to present the legends in one connected story, beginning with the founding of Troy, and ending with Ulysses' safe return and his vengeance on the enemies of his house. The story is told in simple language, and the Homeric narrative, so far as it covers the ground, has been faithfully followed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Putting Troy in a Sack: A Candid and Chronological Account of the Events of the Trojan War in the Light of Modern Discovery If ever the King of France rode up or down a hill in view of loyal and admiring subjects, the discriminating onlooker gazed less intently upon the graceful curves of His Majesty's coach than upon the royal form of the King himself. The mere statement of this axiomatic truth should silence at the outset any captious critic who may be disposed to search for flaws in the limping lines of my epic. It is not as a poet I crave favor. There is little likelihood the lines themselves will ever get far on the road to fame, though they proceed in the main with the requisite number of feet. The verses are merely the vehicle selected to bring to notice the profundity of my research and scholarship. You may regard them lightly, good reader, but bear in mind the more important matter that within them reposes my kingly mentality. With this explanation, I indulge the hope that you may retain your proverbial gentleness even when scanning the concluding episode of the wild horse. If you will take the trouble in your study of this history to investigate as collateral reading the works of Messrs. Homer and Virgil, you will observe at once that I have included in my account many details omitted by my predecessors. I devoured this in a matter of hours, life outside of this book ceased to exist." - Kitty Kat's Crazy About Books Troian Milanovic was looking for a fresh start. New home. New school. New distractions. And switching her major from science to art should've been enough to distance herself from the damage and betrayal she left behind. Until she met the man with the seductive, sea-deep eyes who looked right into her soul. Eyes that stoked a desire so bright it was impossible to ignore. Unfortunately, those eyes were attached to the cold smirk of a callous man-Léo Baudin. Her new art professor. Caustic and captivating, Léo went beyond the typical brooding artist. But his harsh criticisms and rude retorts couldn't dim the longing in his eyes. Or the way it made Troy burn for him. Anger. Loathing. Lust. Some feelings are unavoidable. Especially when they are completely forbidden. And when Troy lets him behind her walls, she'll realize he was the wooden horse full of dangerous secrets she never saw coming. But by then it was too late. Too late to stop wanting the forbidden fruit. Too late to not fight for a love that never should've existed. Even if it costs them everything. The Fall of Troy is the first book in the Odyssey Duet.
