Yards of ink have been spilt, reinforcing the view that the Argentine Junta’s action on 2nd April 1982 was a ‘diversion’ from domestic tensions. This view, coupled with the paucity of any thorough, in-depth analysis afforded to Argentine media aspects of the War - particularly the press - necessitates this volume’s copious international study of the Conflict. Uniquely, US media output is also analysed alongside Britain’s and Argentina’s, all drawing upon Cold War historiography and media theory, with a view to contesting the traditional consensus that media outlets merely reflected government opinion during the Crisis, providing almost no effective dissent. Asserting media and culture influenced the climatic decision-making process of key actors in the Conflict, this book’s triangulated approach explores the integral, influencing role played therein by culture, and how it was not only instrumental to government actions, but also to Argentine, British and US media output. Book excerpt: How objective is media, and how does it use it's outlets to influence the public perception of events? In my matura paper, I analyse the coverage of the war over the Falkland Islands in the two countries involved, Great Britain and Argentina. During my exchange year in Argentina, I experienced first-hand how emotionally and one-sided the locals remember this conflict. After giving an overview over the war itself, the paper concentrates on the coverage of four main events during the war in 1982. The main sources were articles in Clarín, la Nación, The Times, The Guardian, The Observer and The Daily Mirror. Quantity, title setting and statements given are the main points in the investigation. The analysis shows how newspapers from both countries reported with bias. Both concentrated more on positive events and did not publish statements which would damage the moral of the country - ensuring continued popular support for the war happening. It also showed that, because of censorship, the Argentine representation of events was even more distorted than the British. Seeing the big differences in reporting from both countries, the conclusion can be reached that to get the full picture on something it is important to inform yourself through the coverage of all sides involved.
