Book Commentary on the New Testament

Download or read book Commentary on the New Testament written by Robert H. Gundry and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 2399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Verse-by-verse explanations with a literal translation Shouldn't a Bible commentary clarify what God's Word actually says? Going beyond questions of authorship, date, sources, and historicity, respected linguist and teacher Gundry offers a one-volume exposition of the New Testament that focuses on what is most useful for preaching, teaching, and individual study--what the biblical text really means. Providing interpretive observations in a "breezy" style that's easy to read and adaptable for oral use in pulpit or classroom presentations, Gundry directs his book to an evangelical audience. His crisp translation of the New Testament inserts various phrasings of passages in brackets, allowing for smooth transition from original text to alternative and contemporary readings. SAMPLE TEXT OF TRANSLATION JOHN'S PREDICTING A MORE POWERFUL BAPTIZER THAN HE (Mark 1:1-8) 1:1-3: The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, God's Son, according as it's written in Isaiah the prophet, "Behold, I'm sending my messenger before your face [= ahead of you], who'll pave your way [= the road you'll travel], [the messenger who is] the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight.'" Pastors, Sunday school teachers, small-group leaders, and laypeople will welcome Gundry's non-technical explanations and clarifications. And Bible students at all levels will appreciate his sparkling interpretations of the NT Scriptures. A trustworthy guide for anybody wanting to delve deeper into God's Word. SAMPLE TEXT OF COMMENTS "Gospel" means "good news." Jews would associate this good news with Isaiah 52:7. Non-Jews would think of the good news of an emperor's accession to power, birthday, visit to a city, military victory, or bringing of prosperity to the empire. But Mark's good news has to do with the salvation and victory brought by Jesus over evil in all its demonic and physical forms. "The gospel of Jesus Christ" therefore means "the gospel about Jesus Christ" and refers to a proclaimed message ("the voice of one crying out"), not a book (though because books like Mark's contain that proclaimed message, the term came to refer to those books in the capitalized form of "Gospels" to distinguish them from the message, kept uncapitalized as "gospel").

Book HCSB Holman Christian Standard Bible

Download or read book HCSB Holman Christian Standard Bible written by Holman Bible Publishers and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 2628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated reference edition of the HCSB is optimized for easy reading on digital devices. It includes more than 35,000 links to textual notes, alternate readings, explanatory notes, cross references, and Old Testament citations in the New Testament. The table of contents is organized by headings within each chapter and the corresponding verse numbers, and the ebook file has been specifically formatted to be fast and easy to use. The HCSB was developed by 100 scholars and English stylists from 17 denominations, who prayerfully translated what is one of the most significant Bible translations available today. The HCSB reflects linguistic advances in vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and formatting while it retains meaningful theological terms. In the HCSB you'll find God's personal name (Yahweh), the use of "Messiah" in the New Testament, and the use of "slave" in the New Testament, just to name a few examples. Also, you'll notice the contemporary speech patterns in the HCSB mean that words like "behold" and "shall" are not used. Instead, words or phrases that are common today can be found in their place. The HCSB employs a first-of-its kind translation philosophy known as Optimal Equivalence, which seeks to achieve an optimal balance of literary precision and emotive clarity through a comprehensive analysis of the text at every level. This process assures maximum transfer of both words and thoughts contained in the original.

Download or read book The Book of Luke written by Matthew A Knight and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is to Luke that we are indebted for the historical account of the circumstances surrounding the birth of John the Baptist and the Lord Jesus. Luke writes to a colleague, Theophilus, who was evidently a citizen of high position in Rome. Lukes account to Theophilus was not merely for his eyes but to promote an orderly account of the birth, growth, public ministry, atoning death, and ascension of the Lord Jesus as the Son of Man. I have written a summary of each of the twenty-four chapters of Luke. The summary I have given is intended to be read after a study of each chapter. I have also set a series of five to seven questions at the back of each chapter, which are intended to promote discussion. It is my hope that those taking the trouble to read my summary will also read through the Gospel of Luke itself and thus benefit from this.

The INTERSECTION series includes the titles below: • Biblical Faith Meets Financial Strategy, 2nd ed. – How to Lay a Solid Foundation for Prosperity • God's Ownership Meets Money Management – How to Be a Good and Faithful Steward • Divine Provision Meets Generosity Planning – How to Live Life to the Fullest While Richly Giving …and the following companion for a deeper study: • Setting Your Sights on the Intersection – 90-Day Devotional & Journal About the book series: INTERSECTION – Where God’s Wealth Meets God’s Wisdom Imagine yourself at the shooting range aiming at a target. To ensure your aim is accurate, you look for a calibrated point of reference. There are two engraved lines to give you a single place to focus on when aiming at a target. The two lines cross at this spot and create what is known as crosshairs. Crosshairs are composed of two wires or lines, one parallel and the other perpendicular to the horizon. The area that you are focused on is where the two lines intersect. The objective is to align the crosshairs with the bullseye. Aiming to hit the bullseye requires precision, and using the simple principle of intersecting lines, you can easily pinpoint that target. When peering through the scope of your financial future, the strategy is the same. The two dimensions are God’s Wealth (vertical) and God’s Wisdom (horizontal). Once you have these two crosshairs in focus and zeroed-in, you can aim right at the center of your target and hit it consistently. If you want to pinpoint your financial destiny, you need to zero-in on your target, not someone else’s mark. The simple tool needed for pinpoint accuracy is the crosshairs, and one of the most critical steps is knowing where you are aiming. The blessings come where the two lines meet. Get ready to manage money according to the Word of God and live a prosperous life!
