Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of Robert Louis Stevenson No apology is needed for another book concerning Robert Louis Stevenson. It would be impossible to have too much of him; and while his faith has been touched upon in passing by most of those who have written about him, it has never yet been selected for special and detailed study. But a large, and for the most part a very excellent, literature has for the past nine years been gathering round his personality and his work, so that the difficulty grows ever greater for a new writer. How much may be taken for granted? How much must be explained? It may be expected that some will read this book who are intimately acquainted with the subject, and others to whom it is almost wholly unknown. It is an arduous task that lies before him who would offer anything of even the slightest value to both these classes. Yet I venture to hope that what I have written may tempt some to enter one of the richest and most delightful regions in modern English literature, and may interest others to whom that region is already familiar. I have to thank Mr. Graham Balfour for his generous and cordial permission to make use of his Biography - a permission of which I have availed myself with obvious freedom. Book Robert Louis Stevenson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Louis Stevenson: With Numerous Illustrations Not observe the niceties of technical litera ture. The far greater disadvantage of Stevenson is that he did. Because he had a conscience about small matters in art, he is conceived not to have had an imagination about big ones. It is assumed by some that he must have been a bad architect, and the only reason that they can assign is that he was a good workman. The mistake which has given rise to this conception is one that has much to answer for in numerous depart ments of modern art, literature, religion, philosophy, and politics. The supreme and splendid characteristic of Stevenson was his levity; and his levity was the flower of a hundred grave philosophies. The strong man is always light: the weak man is always heavy. A swift and casual agility is the mark of bodily strength: a humane levity is the mark of spiritual strength. A thor oughly strong man swinging a sledge-hammer. They had a dislike to the kind of manhood produced by Calvinism: it was too lank and grim for their taste. They had an ideal of a fuller and lovelier manliness and for its realization desired fresh air, evolving emotion, and dignifying spirituality. Book Essays of Robert Louis Stevenson

Download or read book Essays of Robert Louis Stevenson written by William Lyon Phelps and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays of Robert Louis Stevenson: Selected and Edited With an Introduction and Notes The text of the following essays is taken from the Thistle Edition of Stevenson's Works, published by Charles Scribner 's Sons, in New York. I have refrained from selecting any of Stevenson's formal essays in literary criticism, and have chosen only those that, While ranking among his master pieces in style, reveal his personality, character, opinions, philosophy, and faith. In the Introduction, I have endeavoured to be as brief as possible, merely giving a sketch of his life, and indicating some of the more notable sides of his literary achievement; pointing out also the literary school to which these Essays belong. A lengthy critical Introduction to a book of this kind would be an impertinence to the general reader, and a nuisance to a teacher. In the Notes, I have aimed at simple explanation and some extended literary comment. It is hoped that the gen eral recognition of Stevenson as an English classic may make this volume useful in school and col lege courses, While it is not too much like a textbook to repel the average reader. I am indebted to Professor Catterall of Cornell and to Professor Cross of Yale, and to my brother the Rev. Dryden W. Phelps, for some assistance in locating references. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Robert Louis Stevenson, Vol. 3: The Black Arrow; The Merry Men and Other Tales Tunstall hamlet at that period, in the reign of old King Henry VI, wore much the same appearance as it wears to day. A score or so of houses, heavily framed with oak, stood scattered in a long green valley ascending from the river. At the foot, the road crossed a bridge, and mount ing on the other side, disappeared into the fringes of the forest on its way to the Moat House, and further forth to Holywood Abbey. Half -way up the Village, the church stood among yews. On every side the slopes were crowned and the View bounded by the green elms and greening oak trees of the forest. Hard by the bridge, there was a stone cross upon a knoll, and here the group had collected - half a dozen women and one tall fellow in a russet smock - discussing what the bell betided. An express had gone through the hamlet half an hour before, and drunk a pot of ale in the saddle. Not daring to dismount for the hurry of his errand; but he had been ignorant himself of what was forward, and only bore sealed letters from Sir Daniel Brackley to Sir Oliver Oates, the parson, who kept the Moat House in the master's absence. Book The Works Of Robert Louis Stevenson Volume XI

Download or read book The Works Of Robert Louis Stevenson Volume XI written by Robert Louis Stevenson and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-08 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
