However, for lesbians, the interplay between religious and sexual identities may be such that the opposite effect occurs, particularly among women who have high levels of internalized homonegativity, i.e internalized negative stigma from society about homosexuality. Previous research suggests that some religious organizations may propagate negative messages about homosexuality, and thus exacerbate the stigma that lesbians may feel about themselves due to their sexual orientation. The present study examined faith factors including views of God as loving and controlling, spirituality, religiosity, and negative faith experiences and their relationship with psychological health, taking into account level of internalized homonegativity. It was hypothesized that the faith lives of women with high levels of internalized homonegativity would be markedly different than those with low levels internalized homonegativity. Self-identified lesbian women (n=225) from the Milwaukee area were recruited as participants for this study. The results indicated that the relationship between spirituality and views of God as loving and psychological health outcomes was moderated by level of internalized negative stigma. Generally, these results indicate that those who are high in internalized homonegativity do have different faith lives and psychological health outcomes than those who are low in internalized homonegativity, but only in certain domains.

Unnatural is a collection of stories--not only of the harm religiously-inspired negative messages about homosexuality inflict, but also of redemption. Rachel uses her own story as well as personal interviews with ten other queer women and one female-to-male transgender man to tell how they were judged, lectured, kicked out of homes and families, subjected to reparative therapies, and even assaulted. Some faced homelessness, depression, suicide attempts, and pervasive shame. Still, they fought to keep their faith alive. Each demonstrated an Unnatural ability to forgive, love, believe, advocate, and heal.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to examine whether the positive relationship between religion and well-being in the general population extends to the homosexual population. A sample of individuals who identify as gay or lesbian were drawn from the internet from and from churches with non-heterosexual population congregants. Participants were administered measures of religiosity, perceived conflict between religious faith and sexual orientation, social support, and a psychological health measure encompassing depression, anxiety and stress. Results of regression analyses indicated that Faith Conflict, Social Support, and Attendance each accounted for variance in the prediction of Anxiety-GAD. It was also observed that after controlling for Faith conflict and social support, attendance accounted for additional variance in the prediction of Anxiety-GAD, suggesting that participants who attended church frequently also reported higher levels of anxiety symptoms, and that Faith Conflict and Social Support did not fully account for the relationship. Faith Conflict and Social Support did not fully account for the relationship. Faith Conflict and Social Support also significantly predicted Depression with Social Support accounting for most of the variance in this relationship. Group comparisons revealed that those who attend the less accepting faith communities, experienced greater FC, and reported significantly less Social Support than those of the High group and the Non group. Overall, findings from the current study support previous suggestions that participation in conservative or rejecting religious communities may adversely affect the emotional well-being of GL individuals.

Book excerpt: Christians who struggle with a conflict between their sexual and religious identities have few therapeutic options available to them. ‘Sexual orientation change efforts’ (SOCE) have rightly fallen out of favor and are no longer practiced by most clinicians. At the same time, the common approach of gay affirmative therapy (GAT) can at times present challenges and may not be a good fit when clients hold to conventional religious beliefs and values. An alternative to these methods is Sexual Identity Therapy (SIT)—an approach that aims to provide individuals with a safe therapeutic space to explore the tension between their sexuality and their faith. Working within the SIT framework, clients are able to resolve their inner conflict to their personal satisfaction and to freely choose a coherent identity that enables them to move forward in life. SIT has several stages, each designed to enable the client to make meaning out of his or her same-sex sexuality. At no point in the process is the client encouraged to choose one sexual identity over another. The ultimate goal of SIT is congruence. Congruence is achieved when a person freely adopts an identity and lives it out in ways that are in keeping with his or her beliefs and values.
