Book excerpt: "A Superb New Biography . . . A Tragic Story, Brilliantly Told." —Andrew Roberts, Literary Review George Nathaniel Curzon's controversial life in public service stretched from the high noon of his country's empire to the traumatized years following World War I. As viceroy of India under Queen Victoria and foreign secretary under King George V, the obsessive Lord Curzon left his unmistakable mark on the era. David Gilmour's award-winning book—with a new foreword by the author—is a brilliant assessment of Curzon's character and achievements, offering a richly dramatic account of the infamous long vendettas, the turbulent friendships, and the passionate, risky love affairs that complicated and enriched his life. Born into the ruling class of what was then the world's greatest power, Curzon was a fervent believer in British imperialism who spent his life proving he was fit for the task. Often seen as arrogant and tempestuous, he was loathed as much as he was adored, his work disparaged as much as it was admired. In Gilmour's well-rounded appraisal, Curzon emerges as a complex, tragic figure, a gifted leader who saw his imperial world overshadowed at the dawn of democracy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Failure of Lord Curzon: A Study in "Imperialism" An Open Letter to the Earl of Rosebery The author has adopted anonymity, though quite aware that it is the thinnest of screens, if there is any wish to pierce behind it. The fact of a twenty-eight years' acquaintance with India suggests some knowledge of the matters he discusses, whilst, after so long an exile, his name would be recognised by few. Moreover, in political controversy the author favours an impersonality similar to that which enables a journalist to leave his facts and arguments to speak for themselves. He desires to draw attention not to his own opinions, which are expressed with hesitation, but to the long array of weighty quotation, which he adduces, the statements of men like Sir George Wingate, Sir Richard Garth, Sir Ashley Eden, Sir William Wedderburn, Sir Steuart Bayley, Sir Charles Rivaz, Sir John Jardine, Sir W. W. Hunter, and a score of others, Governors and Imperial Councillors, Judges and Chief Commissioners. He would also solicit the fullest consideration for the unbiassed evidence of high-class journals, the Englishman of Calcutta, the Pioneer of Allahabad, Capital, and many others. Book The Later Life of Lord Curzon of Kedleston aristocrat Writer Politician Statesman

Download or read book The Later Life of Lord Curzon of Kedleston aristocrat Writer Politician Statesman written by George Henry Bennett and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord Curzon was one of the most significant figures in British politics in the early 20th century. This text examines a comparatively neglected period of his life: the period 1906 to 1925. During this last phase of his life he struggled to rebuild his career and life after suffering the humiliation of resigning as Viceroy of India in 1905, and the death of his wife in 1906. This study examines various facets of his life in detail, including his roles as husband and father, aristocrat, member of the Conservative party, leader of the Government in the House of Lords, statesman and politician. It casts new light on his career as a writer. It also seeks to make a contribution to the growing debate about how biography is written.

Download or read book Curzon The Last Phase 1919 1925 written by John Seaton and published by . This book was released on 2011-04-18 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Harold Nicolson's own words 'This study of Lord Curzon represents the third volume of a trilogy on British diplomacy covering the years from 1870 to 1924. The first volume of that trilogy was a biography entitled Lord Carnock: A Study in the Old Diplomacy. The second volume was a critical survey of the Paris conference called Peacemaking, 1919.' All three volumes are reissued in Faber Finds. Curzon himself, not a modest man it must be admitted, rated highly the work of his final years. In his 'Literary Testament' dictated only a few hours before his death he said, 'As to my work as Foreign Secretary from 1918 to 1924 - a period of unparalleled difficulty in international affairs and of great personal worry and sometimes tribulation . . . - I court the fullest publicity as to my conduct in those anxious years and can imagine no better justification than the publication of any or all the telegrams, despatches, minutes and records of interviews for which I was responsible.' Some of the chapter headings alone remind us of what an eventful period it was: Armistice, The Eastern Question, Smyrna, Persia, Egypt, Reparation, Chanak and Lausanne. It is perhaps a pity that Harold Nicolson didn't write the official biography of Lord Curzon (he was a candidate) but what we have here is a work that is, in the words of David Gilmour, another biographer of Curzon, 'acute, jaunty, readable and sympathetic.'

Book excerpt: A sparkling, provocative history of the English in South Asia during Queen Victoria's reign Between 1837 and 1901, less than 100,000 Britons at any one time managed an empire of 300 million people spread over the vast area that now includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Burma. How was this possible, and what were these people like? The British administration in India took pride in its efficiency and broad-mindedness, its devotion to duty and its sense of imperial grandeur, but it has become fashionable to deprecate it for its arrogance and ignorance. In this balanced, witty, and multi-faceted history, David Gilmour goes far to explain the paradoxes of the "Anglo-Indians," showing us what they hoped to achieve and what sort of society they thought they were helping to build. The Ruling Caste principally concerns the officers of the legendary India Civil Service--each of whom to perform as magistrate, settlement officer, sanitation inspector, public-health officer, and more for the million or so people in his charge. Gilmour extends his study to every level of the administration and to the officers' women and children, so often ignored in previous works. The Ruling Caste is the best book yet on the real trials and triumphs of an imperial ruling class; on the dangerous temptations that an empire's power encourages; on relations between governor and governed, between European and Asian. No one interested in politics and social history can afford to miss this book.
