Book excerpt: A lot of people deliberately ignore Bible-based truths; they tend to get involved with propaganda that are other peoples beliefs, attitudes, or actions. If we want to remain full spiritually, we must continue with the partaking of spiritual food. Children, as well as adults, feel well when this is done. Happiness comes from doing Gods will. When this is done, unexpected blessing may come our way. Book The Philosophy of the Spirit

Download or read book The Philosophy of the Spirit written by Horatio W. Dresser and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a tradition that certain subjects are sacred and can never become matters of scientific inquiry. One of these ineffable subjects is the relationship of God to man in the highest ranges of human experience, particularly in those beatific moments when, in expectant solitude or social worship, the soul communes with the Father. But in these self-conscious days psychology has been triumphantly carried into all fields, and if psychological descriptions have sometimes been irreverent it is a question, not of retreat, but of the analysis which affords the most appreciative description. The success which has attended the psychology of religion shows that very much is to be gained by undertaking an account of the higher experiences of men. What must be said in behalf of the sacred or ineffable may be added when science has achieved its utmost. In the following pages I have ventured to mediate between science and religion by endeavoring to be appreciatively true to the everlasting realities of the religious life while taking account of and passing beyond the results attained by modern psychology. If no subject should more deeply inspire our reverence than that of the presence of God, none is more worthy of our thought. Accordingly I offer what I believe to be a contribution to the study of problems which pertain to a field midway between the philosophy of religion and constructive idealism. Advocates of various points of view may meet in this common field to study questions that are rightfully prior to the development of their special views. Each may make such qualification as he will, but all must be concerned with the issues here shown to be fundamental.

Book excerpt: We're facing an information overload. With the quick tap of a finger we can access an endless stream of addictive information—sports scores, breaking news, political opinions, streaming TV, the latest Instagram posts, and much more. Accessing information has never been easier—but acquiring wisdom is increasingly difficult. In an effort to help us consume a more balanced, healthy diet of information, Brett McCracken has created the "Wisdom Pyramid." Inspired by the food pyramid model, the Wisdom Pyramid challenges us to increase our intake of enduring, trustworthy sources (like the Bible) while moderating our consumption of less reliable sources (like the Internet and social media). At a time when so much of our daily media diet is toxic and making us spiritually sick, The Wisdom Pyramid suggests that we become healthy and wise when we reorient our lives around God—the foundation of truth and the eternal source of wisdom.

Book The Life of the Spirit

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hamilton Wright Mabie

Download or read book The Life of the Spirit written by Hamilton Wright Mabie and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2006-04-01 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The severity of Christ, the teacher of love, is more terrible than that of the sternest Old Testament lawgiver, because the test he applies not only tries conduct but searches motive. The law is satisfied when restoration is made or the penalty paid; it cannot go further. But to love, which searches the heart as with a lighted torch, these are only the external signs of repentance; it cannot rest short of a complete cleansing of the spirit. With a severity born of a passionate determination to make the best in every man supreme, it will accept nothing less than final and lasting purification.-from "Chapter XVIII: The Soul of Goodness"Alternating stern harshness with gentle compassion, Hamilton Wright Mabie-one of the more influential thinkers and popular writers of the early 20th century-describes a life lived in the path of Christ that may comfort the very devout, with its images of a demanding paternal God who hurts the believer because he loves the believer, but it will chill others. "The root of all evil... in life is atheism," Wright pronounces, and will brook no argument. The unquestioning and unshakable certainty of Wright's thinking assures this 1899 book continues to be an excellent resource for understanding the modern Christian viewpoint.OF INTEREST TO: Christian scholars, students of the culture wars, readers of religious philosophyAmerican essayist and critic HAMILTON WRIGHT MABIE (1845-1916) wrote extensively on literature, religion, and mythology, and as the book columnist for Ladies Home Journal magazine from 1902 to 1912, he helped spread the love of reading to the general public. Among his many works are Essays in Literary Interpretation (1892), William Shakespeare, Poet, Dramatist, and Man (1900), Norse Stories Retold from the Eddas (1901), Legends Every Child Should Know (1906), and Heroes Every Child Should Know (1908).

Book excerpt: William James called his classic work, The Varieties of Religious Experience, 'a study in human nature'. For James, it is a fundamental feature of human nature that we have a conscious and a subconscious mind, and that the subconscious mind is deeply implicated in the religious life, especially in conversion and other experiences of spiritual enlightenment. In The Religious Life, Donald Capps addresses religious melancholy, the div ided self and discordant personality, religious conversion, thesaintly character, and the prayerful consciousness. He contrasts the cases of two clergymen - one deeply troubled, the other exemplary of the spiritual person. Aimed at general readers, Capps' work makes William James, a popular author in his own day, accessible to a modern audience.
