Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fact of Christ: A Series of Lectures When the greatest religious master whom the world has ever known put one day to His first disciples a certain question, and, on receiving an answer to it, declared that on the strength of this He could build His church, it is evident that here is to be found what He regarded as the critical issue for religion and its proper point of departure. To state the religious problem as Jesus stated it is surely the most hopeful way of approaching the subject not only of Christianity, but also of religion generally, on which He is the indisputably supreme authority. It surprises us, however, when we look at what this question was. The occasion referred to is, of course, the scene near Caesarea Philippi, when Jesus asked His disciples, 'Whom say ye that I am?' The question is a notable one, but it astonishes us that it should be treated as a fundamental one. The inherent truth of a teachers message would always appear to be a more important matter than anything, however interesting, about the teacher himself. Book excerpt: This is a reprint of the classic work by Patrick Carnegie Simpson, "The Fact of Christ".Patrick Carnegie Simpson (1865 - 1947) was a leading Presbyterian churchman during the opening years of the 20th Century. After being ordained in 1895, he served in a number of towns in Scotland and England, notably Renfield Church, Glasgow, and Egremont, Wallasey, before being appointed, in 1914, to the Chair of Church History at Westminster College, Cambridge. During the period leading up to the Scottish Church Crisis (1900-1905), he worked closely with Principal Rainy, his former professor at New College, Edinburgh, in his efforts to secure the union of the Free and the United Presbyterian Churches. In the post World War I period, he played a significant role in the area of inter-Church relations, particularly during the Lambeth Conversations[1] and the Revised Prayer Book controversy. (See below) As an author, two of his books, The Fact of Christ (1900) and The Life of Principle Rainy (1909) earned widespread acclaim. In 1928, Carnegie Simpson was elected Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of England. He retired from Westminster College in 1937.

The greater number of the addresses were delivered before the Theology Class of the Church University; and, after the close of the class sessions, the lectures were continued before other Church organizations engaged in the study of theology. To meet the desire expressed by the Church authorities,—that the lectures be published for use in the various educational institutions of the Church,—the matter has been revised, and is now presented in this form. In anticipation of probable question or criticism regarding the disparity of length of the several lectures, it may be stated that each of the addresses occupied two or more class sessions, and that the present arrangement of the matter in separate lectures is rather one of compilation than of original presentation. The author's thanks are due and are heartily rendered to the members of the committee appointed by the First Presidency, whose painstaking and efficient examination of the manuscript prior to the delivery of the lectures, has inspired some approach to confidence in the prospective value of the book among members of the Church.
