Book OCT and Imaging in Central Nervous System Diseases

Download or read book OCT and Imaging in Central Nervous System Diseases written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of OCT and Imaging in Central Nervous System Diseases offers updated state-of-the-art advances using optical coherence tomography (OCT) regrading neuronal loss within the retina. Detailed information on the OCT imaging and interpretation is provided for the evaluation of disease progression in numerous neurodegenerative disorders and as a biological marker of neuroaxonal injury. Covering disorders like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, intracranial hypertension, Friedreich's ataxia, schizophrenia, hereditary optic neuropathies, glaucoma, and amblyopia, readers will given insights into effects on the retina and the and optic nerve. Individual chapters are also devoted to OCT technique, new OCT technology in neuro-ophthalmology, OCT and pharmacological treatment, and the use of OCT in animal models. Similar to the first edition, this book is an excellent and richly illustrated reference for diagnosis of many retinal diseases and monitoring of surgical and medical treatment. OCT allows to study vision from of the retina to the optic tracts. Retinal axons in the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) are non-myelinated until they penetrate the lamina cribrosa. Hence, the RNFL is an ideal structure for visualization of any process of neurodegeneration, neuroprotection, or regeneration. By documenting the ability of OCT to provide key information on CNS diseases, this book illustrates convincingly that the eye is indeed the "window to the brain".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews recent important advances in the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in order to analyze neurodegeneration within the retina through the quantification of axonal loss. Detailed information is provided on the role of OCT as a promising tool for the evaluation of disease progression in numerous neurodegenerative disorders and as a biological marker of neuroaxonal injury. The disorders considered include multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, intracranial hypertension, Friedreich’s ataxia, schizophrenia, hereditary optic neuropathies, glaucoma, and amblyopia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late May and early June 1991, a NATO Advanced Study Institute was held at a hotel in the hilltop village of San Martino al Cimino a few kilometers from the city of Viterbo in the Lazio region of Italy. The title of the course was the same as this volume and brought together specialists working at all phases of the life span (embryology, infancy, childhood, middle life and senescence) in both animals and humans to exchange ideas, facts and theories in the search for common principles. Such principles could prove important for understanding developmental changes in the central nervous system and visual behavior within the context of a continuum of life-span processes rather than viewing them as events or mechanisms that occur only in a certain period. For example, changes that are associated with "aging" were considered as extensions or continuations of processes that began at an earlier stage of the life span, rather than being seen as processes that only began late in life.

Book Nervous Control of the Eye

Download or read book Nervous Control of the Eye written by Geoffrey Burnstock and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-01-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eye is our window to the world and the loss of its function has a most profound effect on our ability to interact with the world around us. Despite this there is a tendency to underestimate the range, complexity and subtlety of the processes that sustain its function. This volume presents a view which attempts to draw together various aspects of our understanding of the autonomic neural control of the eye and linked aspects of its pathophysiology. Areas covered include nervous control of the cornea, accommodation, the Edinger-Westphal Nucleus, purinergic signalling together with retinal and corneal transplantation. The objective of Nervous Control of the Eye is to provide researchers with an insight into the relative significance of the different components involved in optic innervation.

Book Pharmacological Denervation and Glaucoma

Download or read book Pharmacological Denervation and Glaucoma written by Ph.F.J. Hoyng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glaucoma simplex or open angle glaucoma is a slow, progressive illness with an insidious course which can lead to blindness. According to our con temporary state of knowledge, the illness begins with a decreased outflow of aqueous humor. This leads, sometimes after a period of decreased aqueous humor production due to a feedback mechanism, to an increase in intra ocular pressure (lOP). An elevated lOP can eventually lead to optic nerve damage, which manifests itself morphologically as glaucomatous papillary excavation and functionally in the development of a visual field defect. The classic triad of elevated lOP, papillary excavation and visual field defect, on which the diagnosis of glaucoma was also based in earlier times, is then pre sent. To this can now only be added that tonography usually shows a de crease in aqueous humor outflow and that gonioscopy must reveal an open angle. On the basis of statistical findings, Goldmann has calculated that there may be an interval of as long as 18 years between the initial increase in lOP and the development of visual field defects. This point of view (which has been confirmed in practice) that the onset of the illness can be demon strated by measurement of the lOP has introduced a new element into the discussion around glaucoma, namely, the concept of ocular hypertension. This implies simply that there is an (statistically) elevated intraocular pres sure, even though the optic nerve may not (yet) be damaged.

Genomic research progresses to proteomics and brings us to a deeper understanding of the behavior and function of protein clusters. And now proteomics gives way to neuroproteomics as we beg

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eye and Nervous System: Their Diagnostic Relations by Various Authors In dividing the subjects into the various chapters, care was taken to avoid repetition of the same matter by different authors. In the chapters where overlapping does occur, it was done purposely, with the idea of having both the ophthalmological and the neurological phases fully presented.
