This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expulsion of the Jews From England in 1290 The expulsion of the Jews from England by Edward I. Is a measure concerning the causes of which no contemporary historian gives, or pretends to give, any but the most meagre information. It was passed by the King in his secret council, of the proceedings of which we naturally know nothing. Of the occasion that suggested it, each separate writer has his own account, and none has a claim to higher authority than the rest; and yet there is much in the circumstances connected with it that calls for ex planation. How was it that, at a time when trade and the need for capital were growing, the Jews, who were reputed to be among the great capitalists of Europe, were expelled from England? How did Edward, a king who was in debt from the moment he began his reign till the end, bring himself to give up the revenue that his father and grandfather had derived from the Jews How could he, as an honourable king, drive out subjects who were protected by a Charter that one Of his predecessors had granted, and another had solemnly confirmed To answer these questions we must consider what was the position that the Jews occupied in England, how it was forced on them, and how it brought them into antagonism at various times with the interests of the several orders of the English people, and with the teachings of the Catholic Church. We Shall thus find the origin of forces strong enough when they converged to bring about the result. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. VIII.--The Temptations Of The Jews. But even for those Jews who were rich enough to take part in wholesale trade, there was still a great temptation to transgress the prohibition against usury. All the legal machinery that was necessary for the due execution and validity of agreements between Jews and Christians--the chest in which the deeds were deposited, and the staffs of officers by whom they were registered and supervised--were still maintained in some towns, since they were necessary alike for the recovery, by the ordinary process, of the old debts (many of which, in spite of the order for summary repayment in the Statute of 1275, still remained outstanding)4 and for the registration of any new agreetnents that might be made for the delivery of corn and wool, or for the repayment of money lent ostensibly without interest. There was no lack of would-be borrowers to co-operate with the Jews in using this machinery in order to make agreements on which, in spite of the prohibition of usury, money might profitably be lent. The demand for loans was great, far too great to be satisfied, as the Church thought it reasonable to expect,1 by money advanced without interest; and owing to the progress of the change from payment of...

Book History of the Domus Conversorum

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the "Domus Conversorum" From 1290 to 1891 In the year 1232, King Henry III.1 issued an Order to the effect that he desired, for the health of his own soul and for the souls of his ancestors and heirs, to the honour of God and of the glorious Virgin, to found a Home for destitute Jews converted to Christianity. This novel idea was, in all probability, suggested to the king by his clergy,2 who, by means of the substantial bribes of a free Home and maintenance, hoped to effect a conversion en masse of the English Jews. The king fixed the endowment of the establishment at 700 marks a year, and gave a site for the buildings in what is now called Chancery Lane. This Dumas Oonversorum, or Converts' Inn,3 was situated upon the very spot where the investigations for this paper were conducted, and that is now covered-by the new buildings of the Rolls Office. The history of the House from the year of its foundation until 1290, when the expulsion of the Jews from England took place, is full of interest, but I pass over these fifty-eight years with set purpose. I also omit all reference to the architectural history of the Domus, which Mr. Trice Martin has already detailed before the Society. I intend to devote this paper entirely to the Middle Period of anglo-jewish History (1290 and hope to be able to throw some light upon the question of the presence of Jews in this country from the days of Edward I. Until the days of Cromwell. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bibliotheca Anglo-Judaica: A Bibliographical Guide to Anglo-Jewish History IN the following pages we have attempted to bring together the raw materials of the history of the Jews in England, hitherto scattered among many thousand volumes or tracts, but some day, we hope, to be properly digested and suitably presented in artistic form. Our aim has been to prepare the way for this consummation, by arranging our materials in such a way as to make them most easily available for the students of anglo-jewish history - ii any such there be. We have accordingly classi fied the entries, and under each class we have arranged them alphabetically or chronologically, according as we considered either method of arrangement more suitable, letting uniformity give way to utility. As so much of the work is already arranged alphabetically, and so much else is anonymous, and as our immediate purpose is to subserve history rather than bibliography, an Index did not seem necessary. We have prefixed to the lists of books some account of the mss. Containing information on anglo-jewish history. Here we have been working on almost entirely virgin soil, which was scarcely even touched by the investigations connected with the late anglo-jewish Historical Exhibition. Where possible it has been our aim to give some short account of the contents of the various mss., so that the student may judge whether it is worth consultation. The bibliography itself is divided into three parts, deal ing respectively with the Pre-expulsion period up to 1290. Book The Accommodated Jew

Download or read book The Accommodated Jew written by Kathy Lavezzo and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: England during the Middle Ages was at the forefront of European antisemitism. It was in medieval Norwich that the notorious "blood libel" was first introduced when a resident accused the city's Jewish leaders of abducting and ritually murdering a local boy. England also enforced legislation demanding that Jews wear a badge of infamy, and in 1290, it became the first European nation to expel forcibly all of its Jewish residents. In The Accommodated Jew, Kathy Lavezzo rethinks the complex and contradictory relation between England’s rejection of "the Jew" and the centrality of Jews to classic English literature. Drawing on literary, historical, and cartographic texts, she charts an entangled Jewish imaginative presence in English culture. In a sweeping view that extends from the Anglo-Saxon period to the late seventeenth century, Lavezzo tracks how English writers from Bede to Milton imagine Jews via buildings—tombs, latrines and especially houses—that support fantasies of exile. Epitomizing this trope is the blood libel and its implication that Jews cannot be accommodated in England because of the anti-Christian violence they allegedly perform in their homes. In the Croxton Play of the Sacrament, Marlowe’s The Jew of Malta, and Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, the Jewish house not only serves as a lethal trap but also as the site of an emerging bourgeoisie incompatible with Christian pieties. Lavezzo reveals the central place of "the Jew" in the slow process by which a Christian "nation of shopkeepers" negotiated their relationship to the urban capitalist sensibility they came to embrace and embody. In the book’s epilogue, she advances her inquiry into Victorian England and the relationship between Charles Dickens (whose Fagin is the second most infamous Jew in English literature after Shylock) and the Jewish couple that purchased his London home, Tavistock House, showing how far relations between gentiles and Jews in England had (and had not) evolved.

Book Anti Semitic Stereotypes Without Jews

Download or read book Anti Semitic Stereotypes Without Jews written by Bernard Glassman and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of the persistence of anti-Semitic stereotypes for 400 years in a society almost completely devoid of a Jewish population. Anti-Semitic Stereotypes Without Jews offers an exploration of English history, 1290- 1700, tracing the growth and development of these attitudes. It demonstrates that it is possible for prejudice to thrive even in the absence of a scapegoat group. Following the expulsion in the year 1290 until 1656, although there was no real Jewish community in England, the molders of public opinion kept a shadowy image of the Jew alive through sermons and religious tracts, travelogues, folklore, religious and secular drama. In his analysis, Dr. Glassman shows that despite their theological differences, Anglican, Puritan, and Catholic clergymen concurred in the negative images of Jews presented to their congregations. They pictured the Jews as Christ-killers, and related myths of how Jews performed barbaric and sacrilegious rituals. The image was to plague Anglo-Jewry after a small community was reestablished in the second half of the 17th century. The author's belief that anti-Semitism is primarily a Christian problem transcends both time and place is covered by this volume. Anti-Semitic sentiments are seen here as reflecting deep-seated, irrational responses to the Jewish people, rooted in the teachings of the church and exploited by men who needed an outlet for religious, social, and economic frustrations.

Book excerpt: Proceeding from the premise that Jews, negatively depicted according to a range of demeaning stereotypes, are a feature of English crime writing between the two world wars, the author examines why this is so, with reference to recent debate over the profundity of anti-Semitism in Britain, and traces the evolution of fictional Jewish images in the context of socio-historical trends and events.
