Book Study of the Export Behavior of Small and Medium sized Manufacturers in Minnesota Using Quantitative Correlational Analysis

Download or read book Study of the Export Behavior of Small and Medium sized Manufacturers in Minnesota Using Quantitative Correlational Analysis written by R. Don Keysser and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case study describes my use of quantitative correlational analysis in analyzing the exporting behavior of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), for my doctoral research. The data were generated through an online survey conducted with 375 members of a trade group in Minnesota, the United States (the Manufacturers Alliance); the trade group consists primarily of small and medium-sized family-owned manufacturing firms. The goal was to understand the correlation of various company characteristics with exporting behavior. Quantitative indices of the "Propensity to Export" and the "Intensity of Exporting" were developed and then correlated with five characteristics that are theorized to affect the export development process of SMBs: the nature of the management structure of the SMBs, the size of the SMBs, the location of the SMB (rural vs. urban), the industry cluster of the SMBs, and the access SMBs perceive they have to the external resources they need for export development. The results were used to develop recommendations on the development of exporting by manufacturing SMBs and on the opportunities for stakeholders who work with SMBs. This case reviews the process of conducting research using an Internet-based survey and quantitative correlational analysis, provides several factors that can contribute to the success of this approach, and discusses the relative merits of a quantitative versus qualitative method of research.

Book Firms Exporting Behavior Under Quality Constraints

Download or read book Firms Exporting Behavior Under Quality Constraints written by Juan Carlos Hallak and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We develop a model of international trade with export quality requirements and two dimensions of firm heterogeneity. In addition to "productivity", firms are also heterogeneous in their "caliber"--The ability to produce quality using fewer fixed inputs. Compared to single-attribute models of firm heterogeneity emphasizing either productivity or the ability to produce quality, our model provides a more nuanced characterization of firms' exporting behavior. In particular, it explains the empirical fact that firm size is not monotonically related with export status: there are small firms that export and large firms that only operate in the domestic market. The model also delivers novel testable predictions. Conditional on size, exporters are predicted to sell products of higher quality and at higher prices, pay higher wages and use capital more intensively. These predictions, although apparently intuitive, cannot be derived from single-attribute models of firm heterogeneity as they imply no variation in export status after size is controlled for. We find strong support for the predictions of our model in manufacturing establishment datasets for India, the U.S., Chile, and Colombia.

Book Export Behavior and Productivity Growth

Download or read book Export Behavior and Productivity Growth written by Davide Castellani and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides econometric evidence supporting the hypothesis that export behavior cause learning effects. The idea is that exporting firms obtain efficiency gains through a variety of channels, among which are international knowledge and technology spillovers and the exploitation of economies of scale in a larger market. Following the existing literature, learning-by-exporting is modeled as a change, induced by export behavior, in the stochastic process governing firm's productivity. Empirically, this is implemented specifying cross-section regressions of TFP growth on measures of export behavior, controlling for past TFP growth and other firm's characteristics. Using data on a sample of Italian manufacturing firms, it is found, consistently with most previous works, that exporters do not exhibit faster TFP growth. Nevertheless, TFP growth has a positive and significant relation with firm's export intensity. In other words, only firms with a substantial involvement in exporting activity have a significantly higher rate of TFP growth. This result, consistent with a similar work using a sample of Chinese firms, suggests that learning-by-exporting is by no means simply the outcome of the presence into the export market. Indeed, learning requires commitment and experience of foreign activities, which in turn are associated with the relative importance of foreign activities and the length of time since entry in the export market.

Book Manufacturing Exports from Indian States

Download or read book Manufacturing Exports from Indian States written by Jaya Prakash Pradhan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the less-explored dimensions of how industries in different Indian subnational spaces or states have responded to the growing phenomenon of internationalization. What factors have influenced firms participating in global business? Have state (both central and provincial) policies acted as catalyst for local firms? Not only does this study delve into these issues; it also painstakingly develops a comprehensive database that remains unique in the absence of reliable official statistics on this subject to date. Efforts have been made to establish a reasonably consistent dataset for the period 1990-2008 derived from the CMIE-PROWESS database. Care has been taken to condense the data and classify it by sector, location, size and ownership. The study delineates export patterns by firm and state and explores factors influencing export decisions according to sector, size and location. A further interesting aspect is the book’s critical examination of industrial and trade promotion policies at the state/regional level that might have contributed to or hindered exporting by firms. The states considered for detailed policy discussions are highly diverse and include Gujarat, Odisha and Karnataka. To address the glaring absence of literature on the role of subnational factors in enterprises’ export performance, a preliminary state-by-state analysis of the spatial determinants of firms’ export activities is also provided.

Book Export Performance and the Pressure of Demand

Download or read book Export Performance and the Pressure of Demand written by R Cooper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1970, analyses the factors affecting the export performance of selected firms from particular UK industries in the period 1958-66. The study was designed to test at the level of the firm and industry the hypothesis that, in the short run, variations in exports are a function of the pressure of domestic demand. It also obtained valuable information on the factors affecting the export performance and behaviour of firms.
