Book Experimental Determination of Airplane Mass and Inertial Characteristics

Download or read book Experimental Determination of Airplane Mass and Inertial Characteristics written by Chester H. Wolowicz and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews and evaluates current practices for experimentally determining airplane center of gravity, moments of inertia, and products of inertia. The techniques discussed are applicable to bodies other than airplanes. In pitching- and rolling-moment-of-inertia investigations with the airplane mounted on and pivoted about knife edges, the non-linear spring moments that occur at large amplitudes of oscillation can be eliminated by using the proper spring configuration. The single-point suspension double-pendulum technique for obtaining yawing moments of inertia, products of inertia, and the inclination of the principal axis provides accurate results from yaw-mode oscillation data, provided that the sway-mode effects are minimized by proper suspension rig design. Rocking-mode effects in the data can be isolated. The conduct of the experiments, as well as the test setup used, is a major factor in obtaining accurate results.

Book The Experimental Determination of the Moments of Inertia of Airplanes by a Simplified Compound pendulum Method

Download or read book The Experimental Determination of the Moments of Inertia of Airplanes by a Simplified Compound pendulum Method written by and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A coompound-pendulum method which eliminates the necessity for locating the center of gravity of the airplane by direct measurement is described. The pendulum length is found by measuring the difference between two suspension lengths and solving the equations for the two suspensions simultaneously. Experimental data and a precision analysis are included.

Book Measurement of the Longitudinal Moment of Inertia of a Flexible Airplane

Download or read book Measurement of the Longitudinal Moment of Inertia of a Flexible Airplane written by Henry A. Cole and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application and results of the above method in ground oscillation tests are described. The various corrections to reduce the measured moment of inertia to the reference axis moment of inertia are presented. The results show that measurement of moment of inertia by this method is practicable, provided the knife edges and spring are arranged to minimize excitation of structural modes.

Book Moments of Inertia of Several Airplanes

Download or read book Moments of Inertia of Several Airplanes written by Marvel P. Miller and published by . This book was released on 1931 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics has adopted the practice of measuring the moments of inertia of all airplanes that become available through their use in flight research work. This paper, which is the first of a series presenting the results of such measurements, gives the momumental ellipsoids of ten army and naval biplanes and one commercial monoplane. The data wer obtained by the use of a pendulum method, previously described. The moments of inertia are expressed in coeffienct as well as in dimensional form, so that those for airplanes of widely spaced different weights and dimensions can be compared. The coefficients are also useful for estimating the moments of inertia of airplanes for which no measurements of inertia can be computed. To determine the accuracy with which the moments of inertia can be computed from design data, calculations were made of the monents of inertia for one of the above airplanes by summing up the moments of inertia of its constituent parts. It was found that computed values were in error 20, 10, and 5 percent for the X, Y, and Z axes, respectively.

Book An Accurate Method of Measuring the Moments of Inertia of Airplanes

Download or read book An Accurate Method of Measuring the Moments of Inertia of Airplanes written by M. P. Miller and published by . This book was released on 1930 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This note contains a description of an improved apparatus and procedure used for determining the moments of inertia of airplanes. The method, based on the pendulum theory, is similar to that previously used, but a recent investigation of its accuracy has resulted in the improvements described herein. The error, when using the new apparatus and procedure, has been found to be of the order of 1 percent. Sample data and calculation for an airplane are included in an appendix.

Book A Method for Measuring the Product of Inertia and the Inclination of the Principal Longitudinal Axis of Inertia of an Airplane

Download or read book A Method for Measuring the Product of Inertia and the Inclination of the Principal Longitudinal Axis of Inertia of an Airplane written by Robert W. Boucher and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The angle of inclination of the principal axis was found to have probable error of plus or minus 0.17 degrees both from analysis of the error of inertia measurement of the full-scale airplane and from tests with a model having a simple configuration. Analysis showed the probable error of the inertia measurements for the test airplane to be plus or minus1.00, plus or minus 0.49, and plus or minus 0.35 percent of the true moment of inertia about the X, Y, and Z body reference axes, respectively.

Book Experimental Determination of the Apparent Moment of Inertia of Parachutes

Download or read book Experimental Determination of the Apparent Moment of Inertia of Parachutes written by Shukry K. Ibrahim and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental arrangement for determining the apparent moment of inertia of parachute canopy models is described. The rigid canopy models are attached to a simple torsion pendulum and the periods of oscillation of the models and suspension system in air and in water are measured and used to calculate the apparent moment of inertia of the model canopies. The validity of the experimental arrangement was verified by measuring the apparent mass of some simple geometric bodies such as spheres and cubes and comparing the results with known theoretical values. Models of the circular flat, ribbon and ribless guide surface canopy shapes were tested for angular motion about two different axes and the results are presented in nondimensional coefficient form. Additional results showing the effect of geometric porosity on the apparent moment of inertia of a ribbon type parachute canopy model are presented in the appendix. (Author).
