Book The Experiences of Dentists and Dental Hygienists as They Transition to Teaching as Clinical Instructors

Download or read book The Experiences of Dentists and Dental Hygienists as They Transition to Teaching as Clinical Instructors written by Jennifer Elizabeth Fehrenbacher and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenology was to explore the experiences of dentists and dental hygienists who transitioned from clinical practice to the role of clinical instructor at Southern University. The theory of andragogy was used to guide this study because it provided a framework for training clinical instructors as adult learners. This study focused on the central research question, "What are the experiences of dentists and dental hygienists who have transitioned from clinical practice to the role of clinical instructors?" A transcendental phenomenological study approach was used to provide a deeper understanding of participants' experiences and their thought processes as they transitioned from clinical practitioners to their roles as clinical instructors. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit dentists and dental hygienists who served as clinical instructors in a dental hygiene program at a midwestern public university. Data collection was triangulated using individual interviews, photograph journals, and a virtual focus group. Data analysis was conducted using epoché, phenomenological reduction, imaginative variance, and synthesis of the structural and textural descriptions gathered during data collection. The researcher uncovered five themes from the data collection: life responsibilities, challenges faced, training received, training needed, and training delivery preferences. These themes helped to create an understanding of the phenomena of transitioning from clinical practitioner to clinical instructor as the participants experienced it. The study's findings demonstrated the need to train dentists and dental hygienists to become clinical instructors. Keywords: dental hygiene, clinical instructor, adult learning theory, professional development

Book Transitioning from Clinical Practitioner to Educator Within the Field of Dental Hygiene

Download or read book Transitioning from Clinical Practitioner to Educator Within the Field of Dental Hygiene written by Kay-Trenia Davis-Porter and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative transcendental phenomenological study describes the lived experiences of clinical dental hygienists transitioning from clinical practitioners to dental hygiene educators. The theory guiding this study is Schlossberg’s (1981, 2011) transition theory as it relates to career transition. The focus of this study was based upon the central research question, “How do clinical dental hygienists describe their transition into dental hygiene education?” Educators reflected on the essence of their transition, including preparational methods, pedagogical practices, orientation, mentoring programs utilized during their transition, and staff development since becoming dental hygiene educators. This study took place in the School of Health Sciences at Cobb County Community College, located in the central piedmont region of North Carolina. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit dental hygiene educators with a minimum of two years of clinical experience and a minimum of six months in a teaching role who practice in the state of North Carolina. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews using open-ended questions, virtual focus groups, and a hypothetical letter from participants to dental hygienists considering transitioning from clinical dental hygiene explaining their lived experiences. Data were analyzed to determine emerging themes that explored the essence of the phenomenon. This qualitative transcendental phenomenological study sought to describe the lived experiences of clinical dental hygienists transitioning from clinical practitioners to dental hygiene educators. Themes resulting from data analysis include motivational factors, preparatory process, instructor learning needs and processes, and educational methodology development.

Download or read book Your Career As a Dental Hygienist written by Institute for Career Research and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DENTAL HYGIENIST IS ONE OF THE most challenging healthcare careers. It is both physically and emotionally demanding and also requires a high level of intelligence. At the same time, it is a highly rewarding profession, providing the dental hygienist with opportunities to help many children and adults on the path to better health. To excel as a dental hygienist you must have stamina, dexterity, and intense concentration. You must be a skilled visual observer and also a good listener, able to pay attention to detail and sort out the important data. In addition, you must be able to interact well with both colleagues and patients and, with the patients, have the ability to explain what you are doing when treating them and what they need to do to maintain their own dental well-being. This educational aspect of the work is viewed by many dental hygienists as the most important component of their work. In fact, dental hygienists are in some ways the most important health educators with whom many people ever come in contact. Above all, you must have an empathetic nature, understanding that the patients you see are often in pain. You must be able to put them at ease, to the greatest degree possible under the circumstances, and proceed with your work with the utmost delicacy and care. For many patients, the problem is not pain as much as it is fear, not necessarily of you, but of simply being in a dentist's office and in the treatment chair. These patients require your compassion. Their fears may not reflect the reality of the experience, but they are nonetheless real for those patients. This is a career that offers independence, even when working under the auspices of a dental practice. Hygienists work alone, usually in their own treatment rooms. While many states in the US still require that a hygienist work in a dentist's office, in recent years most states and many Canadian provinces have decided to allow them to work out of their own offices, or in clinics or other healthcare settings without the presence of a dentist. Many dental hygienists are extremely excited about these changes. They note that the public in general is strongly in favor of having increased access to healthcare professionals, especially those working with under-served populations. It is a promising development for these communities to have access to easy, convenient, affordable dental care. As these changes take place, the availability of dental hygiene in schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and programs such as Head Start, can lead to a fundamental change in the overall health of the nation, with the cost of dental care reduced because of the preventative work that is being done. All of this makes it a great time to be joining the dental hygiene profession! It is possible that there will be a shortage as the demand for dental hygienists will be high in the coming years. Dental hygienists tend to make more than other healthcare professionals with similar levels of education and responsibilities. Of course, there will be differences from state to state, and between urban and rural regions. Even with the demand, you may not find exactly the right job the first time you look, but with so much happening in the profession, it is a great time to be looking for that perfect fit.

Book Dental Hygiene Program Graduates Experiences with Transition Into Private Practice

Download or read book Dental Hygiene Program Graduates Experiences with Transition Into Private Practice written by Sharman Rae Woynarski and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study examined the transition to private practice experiences of recently graduated dental hygienists (DHs) from a dental hygiene program. A hermeneutic phenomenological approach was taken to understand the lived experiences of six study participants as they progressed from novice students to competent clinicians. Participants were invited to submit personal journals that expressed their experiences throughout the first six months of practice. These graduates also participated in individual semi-structured interviews in order to elaborate on their transition experiences discussed in their journals. Four key themes emerged from the data collected regarding the importance of: a support system or mentor; a workplace practicum; developing program curriculum to enhance graduate transition; self-assessment and self-directed learning in the development of competence. Informed by this data, several recommendations are made to private practice employers and Dental Hygiene Program faculty to facilitate the process of transitioning future graduates to practice. On this basis, further research should be undertaken to expand on the findings of this study.

Book The Effect of Teaching Experience on Service Learning Beliefs of Dental Hygiene Educators

Download or read book The Effect of Teaching Experience on Service Learning Beliefs of Dental Hygiene Educators written by Sharlee Burch and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this non-experimental causal-comparative study was to determine if service-learning teaching experience affects dental hygiene faculty perceptions of service-learning benefits and barriers in the United States. Dental hygiene educators from entry-level dental hygiene education programs in the United States completed the Web-based Faculty Service-Learning Beliefs Inventory (wFSLBI) and a short demographic survey to determine the perceived differences in benefits at the classroom and community levels, and barriers at the classroom and institutional levels. Independent samples t tests and Mann-Whitney tests were employed in data analysis. Results from 317 surveys revealed there was a statistically significant difference between dental hygiene educators' perceptions in three of the four areas (benefits at the classroom and community levels and barriers at the classroom level) based on their service-learning teaching experience. In regards to institutional barriers, there was no significant difference between the two groups. These findings suggest that service-learning teaching experience impacts United States entry-level program dental hygiene faculty beliefs about the educational pedagogy known as service-learning. This tentative evidence contributes valuable knowledge to the field of service-learning in dental hygiene education and the broader field of service-learning in health professions education. It is recommended that other investigations into the service-learning beliefs of higher education faculty include additional health professional educators for contrast and comparison.
