Book Nipple Matters

Book excerpt: During this unique moment of feminist inquiry wherein breastfeeding has been a focal point of interdisciplinary research, little sociological scholarship has been presented which has centered on the various meanings that African American mothers, as a diverse group, attach to their experiences with breastfeeding and/or infant formula use. While patterns of behavior have been explored in a cross-racial context, most social science studies have not focused on how the choice between breastfeeding, using infant formula, or using a combination of the two has impacted (or has been shaped by) African American mothers' constructs of self, motherhood/mothering, their birth experiences, and their sexuality. In order to understand the interplay of the decision-making process and these constructs, I conducted a qualitative study in which I participated in face-to-face interviews with a diverse group of thirty African-American mothers. They ranged in age from 18 years-old to 50-years-old. At the time of her interview, each mother had at least one child who was three-years-old or younger. Through our discussions, we explored how pre-pregnancy perceptions, lived experiences as a mother, familial influences, and the discourses surrounding motherhood within an African-American context affected the perceptions and experiences that the mothers in the study had with their infant feeding practice(s). Findings suggest that while African Americans mothers know that "breast is best," that knowledge is not the only reason for their decisions. The first step in understanding why African-American mothers choose the feeding method(s) that they choose is embracing the reality that choosing is an ongoing and dynamic process which is often informed by what she does versus "is supposed to do" versus how she is portrayed weighed with the consequences of her choice(s) for herself and her family. Further, African American mothers are in the active process of negotiating an evolving definition of themselves within this post-Civil Rights, Affirmative Action context wherein choices appear abundant, but the choosing always comes with a price.

Book Perspectives of First time African American Adolescent Mothers on Breastfeeding

Download or read book Perspectives of First time African American Adolescent Mothers on Breastfeeding written by Shannon Murphy and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescent mothers are statistically less likely to breastfeed their infants, and African-American adult women are less likely to breastfeed their infants (CDC, 2006). Previous studies with primarily African-American adolescent participants date back greater than 10 years. The purpose of this study was to identify perspectives of first-time, African-American adolescent mothers on breastfeeding. Methods. Two mini-focus groups were conducted with a total of six adolescents, at a teen pregnancy support center in an urban area. Participants were between the ages of 17 and 20, self-identified as African-American, and were either pregnant or had an infant less than one year old. Results. The perspectives of the adolescents were captured in four themes: Perceived benefits of breastfeeding, perceived barriers to breastfeeding, major influences on decision-making, and racial perspectives. Benefits identified by the adolescents included infant and maternal health, infant intelligence, bonding, and decreased cost associated with breastfeeding. Most expressed a desire to breastfeed, but cited pain, lack of resources, and the sole responsibility for infant feeding as the most influential barriers. Individuals influencing the adolescent's feeding decision included the adolescent's mother, family members, friends, prenatal or parenting classes, school personnel, and the father of the baby. When examining racial perspectives, participants reported no African-American breastfeeding role models. Conclusions. These results contradict current literature, which reports a minimal interest in breastfeeding in this population. Findings suggest that future studies should focus on the impact of prenatal educational interventions, as well as postnatal support from a certified lactation consultant.

This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book Longitudinal Relations of Infant Feeding Practices and Growth During the First Two Years of Life Among Predominantly African American and Low Income Families

Download or read book Longitudinal Relations of Infant Feeding Practices and Growth During the First Two Years of Life Among Predominantly African American and Low Income Families written by Tiffany Mary Janina Rybak and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Profiles of mothers' perceptions of infant (ages 4 weeks and 12 months) feeding practices served as predictors of differences in growth and adiposity, controlling for sex, race, and income. Participants were an urban sample of mothers and infants (N = 1,280), generally at risk for pediatric obesity. Latent profile analysis was used to determine profiles across the first year (at 4 weeks and 12 months). A manual BCH appraoch was used to relate profiles to growth and adiposity at 12 and 24 months, controlling for sex, race, and income. A three-class model of infant feeding practices was selected reflecting awareness of infant cues coupled with concern about infant weight. There were no statistically significant relations between latent profiles and growth and adiposity. As a comprehensive and longitudinal study using a novel person-centered approach, key observations about patterns of feeding practices were found that can be targeted for prevention of pedatric obesity.

Book Do All good Mothers Breastfeed

Download or read book Do All good Mothers Breastfeed written by Airia Papadopoulos and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The food an infant is fed can reflect many things: a source of nutrition, the social and cultural circumstances into which an infant is born, or even a familys beliefs about the body and breast milk as a source of nutrition. Exclusive breastfeeding, currently the gold standard for infant feeding in the United States (US), is often identified as an expectation in discourses on being a “good mother.” African American mothers in particular are the least likely group in the US to breastfeed in any capacity and many efforts are underway to increase the breastfeeding rates of this population.

Book Parents Cultural Belief Systems

Download or read book Parents Cultural Belief Systems written by Sara Harkness and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illuminating new volume offers a multifaceted view of parenting cultural belief systems - their origins in culturally constructed parental experience, their expressions in parental practices, and their consequences for children's well-being and growth. Discussing issues with implications beyond the study of parenthood, the book shows how the analysis of child outcomes which relate to parents' cultural belief systems (or parental "ethnotheories") can provide valuable insights into the nature and meaning of family and self in society and, in some cases, a basis for culturally sensitive therapeutic interventions. Illuminating the powerful influence of parents' cultural belief systems on the health and development of children, this volume will be welcomed by a broad audience. Anthropologists and psychologists interested in cultural theory and the interface of self and society will find a rich source of ideas and information. Parent educators, family therapists, pediatricians, and others who deal with ethnically diverse populations will discover invaluable information on what makes parents think and act the way they do. The book can be used as a primary text for courses in cognitive anthropology and cultural psychology, and as an auxiliary text for culturally oriented courses in lifespan development, education, health, and human services.

Book African American and Latina Adolescent Mothers

Download or read book African American and Latina Adolescent Mothers written by Ruiqing Yu and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study was undertaken to explore adolescent mothers' identity development. The focus was their identity as an adolescent, an ethnic-racial minority, and a mother, and how these identities interact with their mental well-being and/or distress. The birth rate among Latina and African American teenager girls is higher than Caucasian girls, and teen childbearing is often associated with adverse consequences. This population needs more attention and help. Most studies with quantitative designs were unable to capture teen mothers' insights into how their identity develops after giving birth and how this development impacts their mental health status. This study contributes qualitative data to the field to investigate all three identities together and their combined impact on mental health status. Erikson's Psychosocial Development Theory, including its expansion by Marcia's Identity Status model, and Mercer's Becoming a Mother (BAM) theory are the theoretical framework for this study. A phenomenological research design was utilized for the interview method and data analyses. The six participants were aged 16-19, and included 3 African American females, 2 multiracial American females, and 1 Latina American female. Eighteen individual, semi-structured interviews were conducted, three with each participant. Participants reported prioritizing the forming of maternal identity. The lived experiences of early childbearing overshadowed their development of adolescent identity, and ethnic-racial identity was not associated with other identities. Participants' maternal identity was most connected to their reporting of perinatal depression with various risk and protective factors related to distress. Strengths, implications of the findings for counseling, and limitations corresponding to the future study were discussed.
