Book Participation in Post secondary Honors Programs

Download or read book Participation in Post secondary Honors Programs written by Scott R. Furtwengler and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present studies focused on 1) the academic outcomes of high-achieving students at a four-year, comprehensive research institution, and 2) the influence of achievement goal orientation on high-achieving community college students' decision to participate in a post-secondary honors program. While correlational studies have been conducted to compare differences in academic achievement between high-achieving students who participate in honors and those who do not, there is a gap in the scholarship regarding quantitative studies to estimate the magnitude of effect for participation in honors education on academic achievement. Further, research findings support non-cognitive factors such as academic self-concept (ASC) and self-efficacy that influence the decision to participate in honors, yet little research has been conducted regarding the influence of achievement goal orientation on students' decisions to enroll in an honors learning environment. The goals of the studies were to determine 1) the extent to which participating in a post-secondary honors program affects academic achievement and 2) the extent to which achievement goal orientation influences students' participation in a community college honors program. The first, an observational study, utilized archival data collected from three cohorts of high-achieving students at a four-year, comprehensive research institution. Big-Fish-Little-Pond-Effect predicts that students who opt out of participating in honors will outperform students enrolled in the honors program on academic achievement as measured by GPA. Quantitative and demographic data were collected and propensity score matching on observable variables was used to match students in the intervention group (honors) to the comparison group (non-honors) to control for confounders and to estimate better the magnitude of effect for the intervention of honors on academic outcomes. One-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to assess differences on cumulative grade point average (GPA) between the two groups using the propensity score as the covariate. It was anticipated that high-achieving students who participate in a post-secondary honors program would earn a lower cumulative GPA than their non-honors counterparts as an effect of their participation in the program. The second study, a survey, measured the four constructs of achievement goal orientation within the 2 x 2 model (mastery-approach, mastery-avoidance, performance-approach, performance-avoidance) across high-achieving students at a community college. Logistic regression was used to determine the constructs' accuracy in predicting students' likelihood of participating in honors. The data were collected from 400 students in an online version of the Achievement Goal Questionnaire-Revised. It was anticipated that the likelihood of participating in post-secondary honors would be greater for students who adopted a mastery-approach goal orientation.

Book Failure is Not an Option Memorable Messages Honors College Students and Academic Achievement

Download or read book Failure is Not an Option Memorable Messages Honors College Students and Academic Achievement written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, Honors College students have long been the exemplar for academic excellence. However, there is no singular explanation for the academic success of these students. In this descriptive study, memorable messages provide a unique avenue in which to explore academic success among Honors College students. Drawing from memorable message characteristics, semi-structured, one on one interviews were conducted with fifteen current Honors College students and later transcribed. Thematic interpretation was used to analyze transcriptions where over 120 individual thoughts emerged from the texts. Results indicated that memorable messages are indeed given to Honors College students about academic achievement in three distinct themes. These themes include (1) encouragement, (2) failure is not an option and (3) college.

Book Supplementing Honors College Applications with an Optional Essay

Download or read book Supplementing Honors College Applications with an Optional Essay written by Mckenzie Leigh Mohler and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the present study was to examine potential differences in background characteristics and academic achievement of honors students who submitted different types of applications. Students who applied to an honors college using traditional applications (high school grade point average and standardized test scores) were compared to students who applied to the honors college using augmentative applications (adding an optional essay component to the traditional application). Nine hundred and eight six students in two consecutive incoming classes were included in this study, which blended causal-comparative research and correlational research. Sternberg's WICS model was the theoretical framework for the study. Independent variables included matriculation year, type of application submitted, and fall-to-fall retention. Dependent variables included fall-to-fall retention, first-year cumulative grade point average, race or ethnicity, gender, reported parental income, standardized test scores, and high school grade point average.

Book An Exploratory Study of the Effects of Cultural Capital on the Successful Completion of a Two year Honors Program

Download or read book An Exploratory Study of the Effects of Cultural Capital on the Successful Completion of a Two year Honors Program written by Ryan Lewis Button and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been assumed that community college students are comprised of students who are either not ready for the rigors of a four-year college experience and/or students who are only interested in receiving a degree in a technical field. With concerns of rising debt, largely associated with colleges being forced to turn to tuition as a major revenue source, the validity of these assumptions merits a better understanding to how the economic atmosphere has changed the demographics of students at a two-year institution, let alone the demographics of an honors student population. Further, little-to-no analysis has looked at the effects of the ascriptive characteristics of students beyond parent's income and occupation in determining academic success in a two-year honors program. To answer these concerns, I examine how institutional, family, and individual level factors affect the successful completion of an honors program by students attending a two-year junior college. It is the objective of this research to arrive at a better understanding of two primary questions: first, what are the characteristics and backgrounds of honors students at a two-year college; second, what are the determinants of academic success at a two-year honors program? It is hypothesized that exposure to cultural capital by students, prior to and while attending junior college, is important in facilitating academic success. Quantitative methodology is used to examine the research questions and test the study hypotheses concerning the effects of cultural capital on successful completion from a two-year college honors program. Data were collected from college students enrolled in the honors program at Tyler Junior College, a two-year college located in Tyler, Texas. The findings report that exposure to culture capital does have a positive effect on students' graduating from a two-year college honors program.

Book Honors Students Characteristics Perceived Locus of Control and Attributions

Download or read book Honors Students Characteristics Perceived Locus of Control and Attributions written by Maria E Leatherwood and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent literature has sought to identify variables which can positively affect at-risk student populations when students start college. In conjunction with high school achievement, motivational variables such as locus of control and goal orientation are strong predictors of student success at a university. Students with a strong internal locus of control and reported goals towards mastering content tend to view themselves as responsible for their work and do well academically. Little research has examined the presence of these variables in high-achieving populations. Although it would seem that students would maintain their attributions for their own success throughout school, locus of control and goal orientation is considered to be fluid and, thus, capable of changing. To understand the experiences of high achieving students, 54 freshmen and senior honors' college students were surveyed during the 2015 spring semester. Participants were questioned about their perceived academic competence by responding to a survey that contained the Academic Locus of Control (ALC) and Academic Goal Orientation-Revised (AGO-R), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MPSS). Students' scores were grouped according to gender and year in school and later analyzed to understand whether demographic variables could influence scores. Analyses suggested that while slight differences existed within groups, the sample was mostly uniform and not impacted by demographic differences. Future research should analyze the role of merit-based scholarships on student well-being.

Book College Student Psychological Adjustment

Download or read book College Student Psychological Adjustment written by Jonathan F. Mattanah and published by Momentum Press. This book was released on 2016-08-11 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: College Student Psychological Adjustment provides the reader an in-depth understanding of students’ relationship experiences in college and how those experiences shape their adjustment to college. Each chapter examines research on one key relationship in a student’s life to better understand how those relationships are re-worked during the college years and what factors help determine adaptive relational outcomes. Along the way, a number of controversial topics are considered from a scholarly perspective, including the effects of helicopter parenting on students’ development in college, the prevalence and problematic nature of the hook-up culture on college campuses today, and policies related to whether students should be randomly assigned to live with their first-year roommates or be allowed to choose their roommates, based on a matching system. Aimed at advanced students and scholars in the fields of psychology, human development, and higher education, readers of this book will gain a fresh perspective on the relationship development of college students and possible avenues for intervention to help students enhance their relationships skills and prevent development of mental health difficulties.
