Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " Y]ou will find in Poole's Synopsis a marvellous collection of all the wisdom ... of the critics.... Query--a query for which I will not demand an answer--has one of you ever beaten the dust from the venerable copy of Poole which loads our library shelves? Yet as Poole spent no less than ten years in compiling it, it should be worthy of your frequent notice.... Matthew Poole also wrote Annotations upon the Word of God, in English, which are mentioned by Matthew Henry ... and he not only highly praises them, but declares that he has in his own work all along been brief upon that which Mr. Poole has more largely discussed, and has industriously declined what is to be found there.... On the whole, if I must have only one commentary, and had read Matthew Henry as I have, I do not know but what I should choose Poole. He is a very prudent and judicious commentator..." Spurgeon's Commenting and Commentaries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Book of Deuteronomy has received considerable scholarly attention, it is all too frequently neglected by the common Christian. This ought not to be. Deuteronomy is much more than a mere repetition of laws; it is full of the covenant of grace, of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and of the way of justification by His blood and sanctification through His Word and Spirit. This is "Scripture, given by inspiration of God, and profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works" (2 Timothy 3:16, 17). Let every word studied, contemplated, believed, cherished, and applied. " Y]ou will find in Poole's Synopsis a marvellous collection of all the wisdom ... of the critics.... Download or read book Edwards the Exegete written by Douglas A. Sweeney and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars have long recognized that Jonathan Edwards loved the Bible, but preoccupation with his roles in Western "public" life and letters has eclipsed the significance of his biblical exegesis. In Edwards the Exegete, Douglas A. Sweeney fills this lacuna, exploring Edwards' exegesis and its significance for Christian thought and intellectual history. As Sweeney shows, throughout Edwards' life the lion's share of his time was spent wrestling with the words of holy writ. After reconstructing Edwards' lost exegetical world and describing his place within it, Sweeney summarizes his four main approaches to the Bible-canonical, Christological, redemptive-historical, and pedagogical-and analyzes his work on selected biblical themes that illustrate these four approaches, focusing on material emblematic of Edwards' larger interests as a scholar. Sweeney compares Edwards' work to that of his most frequent interlocutors and places it in the context of the history of exegesis, challenging commonly held notions about the state of Christianity in the age of the Enlightenment. Edwards the Exegete offers a novel guide to the theologian's exegetical work, clearing a path that other specialists are sure to follow. Sweeney's significant reassessment of Edwards' place in the Enlightenment makes a major contribution to Edwards studies, eighteenth-century studies, the history of exegesis, the theological interpretation of Scripture, and homiletics.

Download or read book Before Jonathan Edwards written by Adriaan C. Neele and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Before Jonathan Edwards, Adriaan Neele seeks to balance the recent academic attention to the developments of intellectual history after Jonathan Edwards. Neele presents the first comprehensive study of Edwards's use of Reformed orthodox and Protestant scholastic primary sources in the context of the challenges of orthodoxy in his day. Despite the breadth of Edwards scholarship, his use of primary sources has been little analyzed. Yet, as Neele proves, Edwards's thinking on the importance of these primary sources has significant implications not only for the status of the New England theology of pre-Revolutionary America but also for our understanding of Edwards today. This volume locates Edwards's ideas in the context of the theological and philosophical currents of his day, as well as in the pre-modern exchange of books and information during the colonial period. The pre-Revolutionary status of theology and philosophy in the wake of the Enlightenment had many of the same problems we see in our theological education today with respect to the use and appropriation of classical theology in a 21st-century context. Ideas about the necessity of classical primary sources of Christianity in sustaining our theological education are once again becoming important, and Edwards offers many relevant insights. Edwards was not unique in his deployment of these primary sources; many New England pastors, including Cotton Mather (1663-1728), preached and wrote about the necessity of orthodox theology. Edwards's distinction came in his thinking about the issues set forth in these sources at a transitional moment in the history of Christian thought.

Book Adam as Israel

  • Author : Seth D Postell
  • Publisher : James Clarke & Company
  • Release : 2012-04-26
  • ISBN : 0227900235
  • Pages : 194 pages

Download or read book Adam as Israel written by Seth D Postell and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postell contends that the opening chapters of the Bible, when interpreted as a strategic literary introduction to the Torah and to the Tanakh, intentionally foreshadows Israel's failure to keep the Sinai Covenant and their consequent exile from the Promised Land, in order to point the reader to a future work of God. Postell highlights numerous intentional links between the story of Adam and the story of Israel and, in the process, explains numerous otherwise perplexing features of the Eden story. Postell employs a wealth of theologies to support his argument including those of Nicholas of Lyra, John Calvin, Wellhausen, Johannes Coccejus and Matthew Poole; successfully breathing new life into the wealth of exegeses.

Book Matthew Henry The Bible Prayer and Piety

Download or read book Matthew Henry The Bible Prayer and Piety written by Paul Middleton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three hundred years after his death, Matthew Henry (1662–1714) remains arguably the best known expositor of the Bible in English, due largely to his massive six-volume Exposition of the Old and New Testaments. However, Henry's famous commentary is by no means the only expression of his engagement with the Scriptures. His many sermons and works on Christian piety - including the still popular Method for Prayer - are saturated with his peculiarly practical approach to the Bible. To mark the tercentenary of Henry's death, Matthew A. Collins and Paul Middleton have brought together notable historians, theologians, and biblical scholars to celebrate his life and legacy. Representing the first serious examination of Henry's body of work and approach to the Bible, Matthew Henry: The Bible, Prayer, and Piety opens a scholarly conversation about the place of Matthew Henry in the eighteenth-century nonconformist movement, his contribution to the interpretation of the Bible, and his continued legacy in evangelical piety.
