Book The Life and Theology of Alexander Knox

Download or read book The Life and Theology of Alexander Knox written by David McCready and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his The Life and Theology of Alexander Knox, David McCready highlights one of the most important figures in the history of Anglicanism. A disciple of John Wesley, Knox presents his mentor as a representative of the Neo-Platonic tradition within Anglicanism, a tradition that Knox himself also exemplifies. Knox also significantly impacted John Henry Newman and the Tractarians. But Alexander Knox is an important theologian in his own right, one who engaged substantially with the main intellectual currents of his day, namely those stemming from the Enlightenment and Romanticism. Meshing Knox’s theological teaching on various topics with details of his life, this book offers a fascinating portrait of a man who, in the words of Samuel Taylor Coleridge ‘changed the minds, and, with them, the acts of thousands.’

Book Latitudinarianism and Didacticism in Eighteenth century Literature

Download or read book Latitudinarianism and Didacticism in Eighteenth century Literature written by Patrick Müller and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between Latitudinarian moral theology and eighteenth-century literature has been much debated among scholars. However, this issue can only be tackled if the exact objectives of the Latitudinarians' moral theology are clearly delineated. In doing so, Patrick Müller unveils the intricate connection between the didactic bias of Latitudinarianism and the resurgent interest in didactic literary genres in the first half of the eighteenth century. His study sheds new light on the complex and contradictory reception of the Latitudinarians' controversial theses in the work of three of the major eighteenth-century novelists: Henry Fielding, Laurence Sterne, and Oliver Goldsmith.

Book Fullness Received and Returned

Download or read book Fullness Received and Returned written by Seng-Kong Tan and published by Augsburg Fortress Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seng-Kong Tan argues that human participation in the divinea classical theological axiom most notably associated with the Eastern Orthodox traditionis a central theme in the theology of Jonathan Edwards. This notion, Tan contends, is a defining motif for the entire systematic sweep of Edwardss theology, and it serves to focus and determine the contours of Edwards's thought. Fullness Received and Returned situates Edwards's theology within the folds of the classical theological tradition, while arguing that Edwards's is a unique and creative form of Reformed theology.

Book Cambridge Platonist Spirituality

Download or read book Cambridge Platonist Spirituality written by Charles Taliaferro and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology collects essays, poetry and treatises by a group of English philosophers from the Age of Reason who were devoted to the goodness of God and the spiritual importance of rationalism. These philosophers, known as the Cambridge Platonists, produced a movement in philosophical theology that flourished around Cambridge University in the seventeenth century and influenced not only Great Britain, but the United States and beyond. Their school of thought emphasized the great goodness of God, the compatibility of reason and faith, an integrated life of virtue, and the deep joy of living in concord with God. This volume introduces and presents the key documents of the Cambridge Platonist movement while setting its thinkers in their historical and religious context: the decades of turbulence and political crises surrounding the English Civil War.

Book Religious Affections

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan Edwards
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2009-01-01
  • ISBN : 0300158416
  • Pages : 535 pages

Download or read book Religious Affections written by Jonathan Edwards and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains Edwards' most mature and persistent attempt to judge the validity of the religious development in eighteenth-century America known as the Great Awakening. In developing criteria for such judgment he attacked at the same time one of the fundamental questions facing all religion: how to distinguish genuine from spurious piety? The Awakening created much bitter controversy; on the one side stood the emotionalists and enthusiasts, and on the other the rationalists, for whom religion was essentially a matter of morality or good conduct and the acceptance of properly formulated doctrine. Edwards, with great analytical skill and enormous biblical learning, showed that both sides were in the wrong. He attacked both a ?lifeless morality” as too pale as to be the essence of religion, and he rejected the excesses of a purely emotional religion more concerned for sensational effects than for the inner transformation of the self, which was, for him, the center of genuine Christianity.
