Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flag Day Manual: Illustrated History of the American Flag The first permanent settlement in Virginia was made at Jamestown in 1607. There float-ed over that settlement not the flag of England, but the Turks' Head Banner of Captain John Smith, the one man to Whom Virginia owed her early prosperity. Though he was himself fond of roving and wild adventure, he taught those early settlers the value of industry and regular habits of life. His flag, however, stood for nothing but his own past history. He hadtaken part in the wars between the Turks and the Christians in southwestern Europe. One day while the Christians were besieging a town, a Turk rode out and challenged any Christian to fight in mortal com bat, for the amusement of the ladies. Smith accepted the challenge, and killed the Turk, as he did another the next day, and then a third. For this success he was granted a coat of arms bearing three Turks' heads in a shield. The historic value of this flag is seldom considered, but the heroic efforts of Captain John Smith of Virginia are cherished in American legend and literature. Book The American Flag of Stripes and Stars

Download or read book The American Flag of Stripes and Stars written by William Elliot Griffis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Flag of Stripes and Stars: Mirror of the Nation's History, Symbol of Brotherhood and World Unity The Americans in khaki enjoy comforts and privileges to which those in the buff and blue or of the sky-blue uniform of 1812, 1848 or 1861 were strangers. Crowning all, are the right and pleasure of fighting under the national flag once the privilege of the sailor only. We must, if true to history, distinguish between regimental colors and the national standard. It is a proof and one, on the whole, which is rather credit able to our people, of the reality of the more perfect union sought and provided for by our fathers, in the constitution of 1787, that, in the popular mind, things relating to the national colors are supposed to have been always what they are now. It is taken for granted that the thirteen-striped flag of the united colonies, from Jan. 2, 1776, and of the United States from July 4, l776, 'to June 14, 1777, when the stars were added, was, as a matter of course, carried in bat tle and was familiary known by sight to every one. A large majority of the hundred or more popular artists and writers on this subject proceed upon this one obsession. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story of the American Flag: With Patriotic Selections and Incidents To the loyal American citizen, wandering in a foreign land no sight is more welcome or more heart-stirring, than the sight of the dear old Stars and Stripes. With what courage and self-devotion does the soldier follow the beloved flag amidst the smoke and carnage of battle, shedding his blood freely to maintain its honor, dying, it may be, in its defense. To every true heart, the flag is not merely a piece of bunting, backed by the power and authority of Government, to enforce its recognition, nor is it merely the emblem of his land, or the insignia of the Nation, but it is the embodiment of a principle, the symbol of those sacred truths handed down to us by the Past as a precious inheritance, and which, if we are not traitors to the trust. Will be as sacredly transmitted by us to the future. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Household Story of the American Conflict

Download or read book Household Story of the American Conflict written by Mary S. Robinson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Household Story of the American Conflict: Forward With the Flag The kindly reception accorded to "The Brother Soldiers" has encouraged the author to the preparation of other volumes for the series. As the conflict deepens and widens, its individual features assume greater prominence, and are in some instances invested with a rare interest. "Forward with the Flag" continues the narrative already begun, and brings it down to the winter of 1863. A recent notice of "The Brother Soldiers," suggests that the author should make the narrative her own, and give but little share to descriptive articles written by other pens. It may not be amiss to state that the quotations, except in the case of certain poems, are merely apparent, and are used simply to aid in carrying out the plan of the story.
