Today this music is largely in eclipse, mostly absent in performance and even from accounts of music history, in spite of—and initially because of—its adherence to an expanded tonality. No previous book has focused on the nature and scope of this musical tradition. Neoclassical Music in America: Voices of Clarity and Restraint makes clear what neoclassicism was, how it emerged in America, and what happened to it. Music reviewer and scholar, R. James Tobin argues that efforts to define musical neoclassicism as a style largely fail because of the stylistic diversity of the music that fall within its scope. However, neoclassicists as different from one another as the influential Igor Stravinsky and Paul Hindemith did have a classical aesthetic in common, the basic characteristics of which extend to other neoclassicists This study focuses, in particular, on a group of interrelated neoclassical American composers who came to full maturity in the 1940s. These included Harvard professor Walter Piston, who had studied in France in the 1920s; Harold Shapero, the most traditional of the group; Irving Fine and Arthur Berger, his colleagues at Brandeis; Lukas Foss, later an experimentalist composer whose origins lay in neoclassicism of the 1940s; Alexei Haieff, and Ingolf Dahl, both close associates of Stravinsky; and others. Tobin surveys the careers of these figures, drawing especially on early reviews of performances before offering his own critical assessment of individual works. Adventurous collectors of recordings, performing musicians, concert and broadcasting programmers, as well as music and cultural historians and those interested in musical aesthetics, will find much of interest here. Dates of composition, approximate duration of individual works, and discographies add to the work’s reference value.

Book excerpt: Igor Stravinsky's neoclassicism has frequently been discussed in terms of its relationship to earlier musical styles. While a number of scholars, employing a wide variety of analytical approaches, have examined this aspect of Stravinsky's neoclassical music, only a few scholars have used topic theory to explore the composer's link with music of the past. Seeking to fill this gap in the literature, this dissertation uses topic theory as its primary analytical approach, examining how Stravinsky's connections to the past can offer multiple ways of interpreting potential stylistic and expressive meanings in his neoclassical works. Chapter 2 analyzes Stravinsky's topics and tropes utilizing Robert S. Hatten's four tropological axes: compatibility, dominance, creativity, and productivity. Each axis examines related but separate aspects of each trope, analyzing criteria related to the musical and stylistic associations of a trope's component topics along local and global scales. Studying the different ways in which each of these four axes interact in Stravinsky's tropes provides a means to arrive at more nuanced musical and stylistic interpretations of these topical interactions. Chapter 3 develops my concept of "distorted topics." Building on Pieter C. van den Toorn's discussions of "displacement" in Stravinsky's music, this chapter examines the composer's rhythmic and metric manipulations of certain dance topics. Using Wye Jamison Allanbrook's discussions of rhythm and meter pertaining to dance topics, this chapter examines these important rhythmic and metric characteristics of Stravinsky's neoclassical works, and explores ways in which these distortions can be interpreted musically and expressively. Chapter 4 analyzes how Stravinsky used topics in four traditional formal models throughout his neoclassical period: ternary form, theme and variations form, sonata form, and cyclic form. First, the form itself is examined in order to determine how Stravinsky both adheres to and subverts the traditional model. Second, I examine the ways in which topics and tropes provide a sense of coherence to Stravinsky's appropriation of these forms. Using analytical techniques developed in chapters 2 and 3, chapter 4 examines the formal, stylistic, and expressive ways in which topics and tropes contribute to Stravinsky's manipulations of conventional formal structures.

In aspects of style and operatic convention it looks back to the eighteenth century, and in particular to the operas of Mozart and da Ponte, while making references also to other periods, to operas from Monteverdi to Verdi. Yet at the same time it is wholly a work of the twentieth-century, and indeed it is centrally concerned with the impossibility of return, artistic, psychological or actual, as well as with the nature and limitation of human free will. The Rake's Progress is not one of unbridled dissipation but rather, more interestingly, one of attachment to naive notions of freedom and choice, and his tragedy is that he can never go back.

Book excerpt: Aaron Copland, Louise Talma and Walter Piston were among the many young American composers who studied with Nadia Boulanger at the American School in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s. During that same time Igor Stravinsky was composing in a new style that perplexed some, but seemed to others as a logical and progressive step. After the premiere of Stravinsky's Octet , considered by many as his first fully neoclassical work, many composers--including Copland, Talma and Piston--began to imitate his style, which has come to be known as "neoclassical" because it epitomizes the twentieth-century modernist aesthetic of precision, order and control. While features such as contrapuntal textures, classical forms and surface gestures that sounded "Stravinskian" began to appear in many other composers' pieces during the 1920s and 1930s, other deeper-level characteristics of Stravinsky's style, such as intersecting octatonic and diatonic pitch structures, were absorbed into the compositions of many of the students of Boulanger, who was in fact an avid proponent of Stravinsky's new style. In this dissertation I discuss Boulanger's perspective on Stravinsky's neoclassical style; Copland, Piston and Talma's views on Boulanger and Stravinsky; several essential features of Stravinsky's new style and current interpretive theories; and how these essential features manifest themselves in works by Copland, Piston and Talma.
